Traditional MPVs are losing ground to high-riding vehicles, but Citroen isn't willing to let go of them just yet
For the 2019MY, they have the all-new Berlingo out, which is heavily related to the Opel/Vauxhall Combo and Peugeot Rifter
It can be had with either a diesel or a petrol engine, both available in different outputs, and with either a manual or an automatic gearbox
Buying a van-based MPV means that you're more interested in practicality than other aspects – and the new Berlingo doesn't disappoint
It has a lot of storage spaces scattered throughout the cabin, and the rear seats fold almost flat, which allow users to haul some large cargo
Thanks to the flat floor, three adults can sit at the back relatively comfortable, too
The 2019 Berlingo is equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning as standard
It also gets an 8-inch infotainment system, which is somewhat tricky to use, and easy-to-wipe plastics
The ride is relatively comfortable. The steering is accurate and light at lower speeds, and there's little road noise coming into the cockpit
Nonetheless, the boxy styling of the vehicle means that users will have to learn to live with some wind noise
As far as price is concerned, the Berlingo undercuts some car-based MPVs in the UK, but costs similar to the van-based people carriers
What Car took the third-gen Citroen Berlingo out for a short drive to find out if it is still relevant in a market that's saturated by SUVs
