Good evening, welcome to new episode!
Welcome from my company base
It is Sunday night, I am just about to leave for Germany
I've got 23t (51,000) of pipes loaded
but today is not about the load but test
comparison of fuel consumption of two trucks
two Volvo Trucks; this is the first one, and here the other one
I could say they are nearly twin trucks
Those are Volvo FH13
so 13l engines
540HP
the only difference is gearbox
that one is manual/standart
and this one - mine
is automatic - iShift
the loads are exactly the same
23t (51,000lb) of pipes
as I said before
we've got wooden bars as well - standś for different big pipes
the same quantity
on my trailler and the other
the traillers are pretty much
the same, mine is a bit older
but the are very much alike each other
so when it comes to weight - the same for both trucks
so it is going to be very interesting
cause two similar trucks
with different gear box
and, of course
two different drivers
so 51t (112,000lb)
is each truck
it is pretty heavy
so 51t (112,000lb)
let's say 51,5t (113,000lb) with that wooden stands
we get the same fuel
the differences are: tyres, my fairing on the roof is a bit higher
when we talk about aerodynamics
making a litlle difference in fuel consumption
the rest is more less the same
I am going to drive my iShift Volvo
without using
POWER option
I won't reduce gears climbing uphill
I will give 100% free hand to Volvo
automatic gear box
what I mean is that
I won't interfere with gearbox work
it will drive the way it want
we've got nearly 1000km to go
we drive german A4
passing Dresden, etc
it is a hilly highway
I am very curious about the result
what will be the difference
to be honest I am not very entusiastic
about automatic gear box for heavy haul overdimentional truck
for now for highway - without hughe load it is perfect, but I affraid
when I load 62m (203m) and will have to manuver off road
I won't be able to be that precise anymore. Will see
Not let's get some fuel and hit the road!
once we get fuel we will reset all the fuel data
and - wanted to ask you
how is the sound? Recently I was recording
videos using GoPro 6 Black with external microphone
and in let me know in the comments the all
the sounds is on one side
I had no idea about that because I don't use headphones when I edit my videos
today for the first time I record with my iPhone X
so will see what will be the image and sound
I am using front camera now
but sound is the most important now
OK, let's reset computer
the odometer in this Volvo is 265922km
so zeros for everything
I am going to my Volvo now
pipes, such a pipes
we refuelled together
the same fuell
OK, I do the same in my truck
trip 1 - 0, trip 2 - 0
and here on the right onboard computer
fuel used - 0
distance to empty tanks
and here on GPS
we've got 582km to go
so starging now
the test begins
it is not a challenge but a test
It crossed my mind to do it
so here we go! As I said before
I won't go gear down
won't use POWER option
eco+ only
today
are you ready?
yeah, go ahead
off we go!
we are entering polish highway A4, direction Zgorzelec
563km to go (350m)
crouse control ON
setting the distance
from the vehicle in the front
will set the longest
and now
Volvo takes over the control
I set the speed I want and it speed up the way it wants
my max speed is 85km/h (53mph)
20km is behind us, what do you have?
57l/100km average, what is yours?
56,3l/100km
mine is going down as well, 56,8 now
56,7 now
I think you should go first - I won't be blocking you when you want to speed up
you've got standart (manual)
so your drive style is different
I fully relay on Volvo
don't you worry
the road is flat
so nothing interesting for now
it will be more hilly
close to Dresden
I mean - in my truck won't be interesting
I will be straggling
but the result will be interesting
I've got 54,9l/100km already
52,8l/100km
it is becuase you are hiding behind me!
I can pass you
if you want...
I don't mind, but it is better for you
I will be slower
going up
I won't use POWER
OK, now the interesing highway begins
both trucks can show off now
we are on A4
we be climbing
on Dresden hill
as you see, everybody pass me but I won't gear down or interfere
to eliminate drivers factor as much as possible
it is pretty easy in that case
so I've ECO+ mode on
damn, normally I would put the gear down
come on, Volvo
gear down, please...
I will be driving 30km/h (19mph) in a second
you've got that power, use it
are you going or you are petting your truck?
it does what it wants' but I am affraid I can't stand it
OK, it is speeding up
I've got to tell you
it is not that safe to drive that slowly on a highway
intereting how much it will burn now, pulling up
sorry?
what is your fuel consumpiton now?
40,5l/100km now
speed up
you are far behind me now
yeah... what is yours?
the radio is breaking up
I've got my interval/distance set
as you see
max avaiable
but it is a smart device
as you just seen - when that truck passed me
and returned to my lane, pretty close to me
but my Volvo didn't slow down rapidly
I noticed that when big trucks pass me
in such a monotonous and gentle manner
it slows down gently as well
letting the truck speed up
and waiting to reach set distance, without braking
rapid braking
it react differently when it comes to cars
especcialy when it drives in unexpected way
e.g when car on the middle lane decides to exit suddenly
that Volvo brakes rapidly even though there is a lot of space
Probably most of you (in Europe) drive trucks with that distance controler
so I should't mantion about the way it workd
but when it comes to me
it is my first truck with that system
we are going downhill now
now I have to accelerate to pass
the truck in the front is slow and I don't want to loose my speed
this is my legal max on crouse control, going down
european trucks must be blocked to 90km/h (56mph)
I could go faster when I go down, with heavy load
but the computer keep 90km/h (56mph)
that's a legal issue
speeding up looks like taht
I press the button
and it speeds up by it self
to set 85km/h (53mph)
I don't hastle, I am very patient
it is speeding up slowly, economically
damn, still 120km (75m) to go
that night was taugh
attention, this is an official annoucement
the test is over
So we are in Volvo with manual/standart gearbox
let's have a look
the average fuel consumption is 40,1 l/100km
the average speed is 71km/h (44mph)
588,2km (365,5m)
235,5l used (62gal) of fuel
let's go now
to my Ishift
here we are
automatic Volvo truck
the average fuel consumption is 39,7l/100km
average speed 70km/h (43,5mph)
but very important - look at the milage now!
595,2km (370m)
and how much fued burnt?
236l, (62gal)
that's the key
at first you see that manual gearbox
burnt more fuel
and then you see the distance
pay attenion to that
my Volvo theoretically made 7km (4,3m) more
but we were driving together all the time
I was driving as a second one,
I didn't exist anywhere
the same way though truck stop
on the drop we are parked one by one
so...
we drove exactly the same way
so it means
my tyres are bit more used/worn thus a bit smaller
so my Volvo registered
longer distance on onboard computer
though the distance for both trucks is exactly the same
so in that case
I think we should rely on
used fuel data
in my truck it is 236l (62gal)
and in the manual/standart Volvo
it i 235,5l (62gal)
when it comes to running engine when we were having a break
I would say
it is the same
both of us
never shut the engine down just after
stop
we always let the enigne run for some time
to cool the turbine down
so we shut the engines toghether more less
so I've got to tell you I am very surprised about the result
my guess was that
manual gearbox will have lower fuel consumption
because
the guys form the forklift waves to me
he thought I am doing my hair
or make up using phone as a mirror
but coming back to the subject
I though that with manual you can speed up the way you want
make 'georgia overdrive' etc
and the other thing is that
I didn't interfere with onboard computer
so I was slow and 'lazy'
as you remeber
just set the speed, distance
and that's it
I used gas pedal only when I had to pass slower trucks
that's it, nothing else
so I am surprised
indeed, surprised cause we've got dead-heat
yeah
quite interesting
it was a good idea
acctualy we are going empty now for pick up
around 500km (310m)
together
we load the same staff
and then we go together
to Poland
so maybe we will try to continue that test
in that case and will see
if the result will be
the same as for this night...
