welcome back everybody its mark and it's exotic our play place coming back at you
with a new video today and the beginning of a series and the series happens to be
a reference to a video that was very popular that I did about a year ago and
it was about the top 5 things you need to know about the e60 m5 so today's
video is one of those points and we're gonna talk about the BMW e60 m5 top
speed capabilities and how you are able to make changes potentially or improve
on its current top speed state we're gonna talk about that of course if you
wait around to the end of the video you're also going to be treated with the
heads up to what the next video is gonna follow and what the next video is gonna
be about now of course I'm making reference to a video that I created that
had the top 5 things you need to know but because that video was so popular I
followed it up with a second part to that which had 5 other things that were
additional interesting facts about the e60 m5 and so today's video is the
beginning of a series that we're gonna talk about every one of those 10 items
but in more detail as you know we basically scratched the surface in those
videos and we really didn't get down to a lot of detail without the time we're
boring you to death we really just wanted to to give you the quick brief
about each one of those topics today is the beginning we're gonna talk a little
bit more detail on every one of those and today is the top speed of the e60 m5
so basically gonna make reference to the elusive top speed of these cars now
everybody knows the top speed of the e60 m5 is set at roughly 170 miles per hour
because BMW feels that that's the safe strategy for drivers out there who just
you know not everybody is capable of handling these cars at the top speed and
they keep them you know set at at a speed that's more realistic and
certainly you know well within the capability of not only the driver but
the mechanicals of the car as well as the tire capability again don't forget
you don't I mean these cars when they're new they have all kinds of potential but
as these cars get older you know second third fourth owners of these cars
maybe ours unstrapped budgets or possibly you know don't want to spend
all the money that the original equipment had to offer so they might put
on you know aftermarket job retires maybe the maintenance on suspension
isn't quite what it should be and so you know the manufacturers do what they
consider is a safe thing safety improve they install a safe margin for the
consumer for these cars and therefore BMW sets the top speed at about a
hundred and seventy miles per hour now there's been a lot of debate online how
fast can these cars really go some people ask the question if you remove
the governor can it do 180 miles per hour check for sure 190 absolutely 200
well that's the question can this car hit 200 miles per hour
now don't forget 200 miles per hour is that gateway to supercar League cars
that hit 200 miles per hour Lamborghini Diablos and Aventadors and you're
talking about even the guy our doles cannot hit 200 miles per hour so you're
really into supercar territory ferrari f40 Porsche 959 these are the first cars
to ever just touch 200 miles per hour or two and 201 miles per hour these cars
are all amazingly quick performers with large horsepower lightweight body panels
wrapped around them and they are able to touch 200 miles per hour well here we
have a luxury bruiser cruiser that can actually tap not only a hunt 200 miles
per hour but has been recorded at over 205 miles per hour now some people say
well maybe that's 205 you know there's a lot of videos online that show cars
doing 205 to 210 but maybe some of those are stroker kit cars maybe some of them
are supercharged cars maybe there's been other modifications but the reality is
even guys like Jeremy Clarkson has referenced that BMW has laid claims with
removed governors these cars will attain 205 miles per hour now let me give you a
little piece of information here a few years ago that there was a local
fundraiser at a military runway here where I live up here
north and it was a fundraiser and it was there to invite in essence to raise
money for a good cause and it the intent was all the guys with the big car is the
big performance car is the big hardcore muscle cars the modded machines
supercars or Islam bows Porsches you name it
all came out to that show let me explain a little something there was two cars
that cracked 200 miles per hour that day the first place car was a ferrari enzo
while those cars we all know what those things are worth today they're probably
up around that two million dollar mark good luck in finding one for any
reasonable dollars so those are more or less unattainable so that car hit about
206 miles per hour guess what was number two it was a Dinan equipped and tuned
East 60 m5 and with the Dinan equip all it really does is change timing and
tuning a little bit to improve on efficiency it removes the governor no
doubt but it's not really adding any horsepower so it's almost stock really
all the dining is more or less doing is removing the stock governor and allowing
the car to exercise its full capability and stretch those long legs that the e60
happens to have so that day the e60 was second place to an Enzo at 204 miles per
hour and that was quoted clocked by an actual official radar gun so that to me
is very inspiring so there's more to this story you want to know how can you
remove those governor's welders there's a few tuners out there you've got the
Evolve tune you can do the ESS tuners they also do supercharging and other
mods for these cars but they do the tune for that so they remove the governor you
also have again I mentioned Dinan and by the way I'm not affiliated with any of
these brands I just want to make a mention that these are all potential
tuners that can make these changes for you okay so how do you substantiate
these at numbers well give a little plug out to the boys on m5 forum the m5 board
for I've been you know part of that
community for quite some time now and they are full and chalked full of good
information that you know any one of you guys can tap into and it's certainly a
place where you know they're very resourceful folks who are always willing
to help out and share a lot of the wisdom and knowledge that they have on
these great cars but in that m5 forum there's people that have taken and
extrapolated so you take the basic graphic chart of what the gear ratios
are on in e60 m5 and you work out the mathematics now understanding gear
ratios are a constant they don't change they're a linear ratio that starts at
one point and extends out to another point so the gear ratio in fact does not
change the only thing that changes is your torque band and your horsepower
curves those are the only things that can
change and as long as you have the horsepower and the torque and there's
not too much windage that car in theory theoretically top speed wise can
actually hit these numbers so we had a resourceful bunch that took the basic
graph of known values by BMW and they took the gear ratios and they drew a
line and extrapolated and a lot of these numbers were actually substantiated and
they filled in the rest of the chart and gave you some good conclusions so that
you can make your own decisions whether this car can legitimately hit those
numbers and if you look at the chart it shows and very clear it shows very
clearly that in fact with enough power and a lack of windage these cars in fact
can hit over 200 miles per hour now there's a debate about does it hit 205
202 211 does it really matter the car does hit over 200 miles per hour
and it has been verified by people certainly in Europe I know there's a lot
of European guys hit the Autobahn or the autostrada in Italy you can probably
attest to this but I definitely know it has been verified and I personally have
seen it here on a racetrack or on that runway that the these cars can in fact
hit those kind of numbers with a relatively stock tune so looking
at these charts and we're not talking about even running into the red we know
the horsepower drops before red line and the red line of course for these cars is
8250 rpm so drawing a line up to about 8,000 rpm
is a closer value that's gonna take you to the peak horsepower you might as well
shut er down at that point up to about 8,000 these cars are hitting in that 215
to 220 miles per hour now understandably of course you have to deduct a little
bit of error for speedometer of course because the speedos aren't always bang
on as a matter of fact they're always a little bit optimistic so subtracting
some error there that still takes you down to a number where we're not even
running into the red but we're allowing for marginal error on the speedo and
we're still seeing numbers in that 204 205 mile per hour range which is a very
decisive and definitive verification that these cars can hit that number and
of course wind is a factor but these these numbers in fact have been verified
in real-world life experience so everybody I just wanted to share that
with you that was a little more detail on this the tuners available the actual
top speed how we came about to determine those numbers through charting and
whatnot I want to share that information with you I hope you found some value
there everybody and beyond that make sure you come around for the next video
because the next video I'm gonna be talking about the acceleration of the
e60 m5 that will be my next video and we'll get into a little more detail
specifics on that not just the absolute number but we'll talk a little bit more
how and why so everybody I thank you for coming out I really appreciate you guys
for watching the video sticking around to the end please make
sure you subscribe if you're not subscribed already again don't forget to
give it a thumbs up and I want to hear your comments below I'd love to hear
what you guys all have to say what do you guys think the m5 yeah we know again
it's not the most reliable car but this is really not the point of this car the
point of this car is f1 based drivetrain that
has serious nosebleed potential so thanks again everybody love to see on
the next one and we'll catch you on the flipside see that buh-bye
