You may be asking why I'm driving a Kia Ceed.
This is the first generation Cee-apostrophe-d; a difficult name.
The second generation is better.
We were in Frankfurt for the launch of third generation over there.
That's a pretty car.
One important thing happened.
Albert Biermann. Who is that?
He worked in Munich for BMW's M devision. He developed the M3 and M5.
Now he works for Kia and was involved with the Ceed's suspension. It had to be a nice car.
I think it looks like fun. This is horrible.
Kia was horrible back then. The GT line, the red one, was better. It's okay-ish.
The car next to it has presence.
It's a fun car with its own face.
It's presence has its origins in Europe. I'm taking a left here.
The designer is known for the tiger-nose grille.
You may see BMW kidneys in the grille, but it has to look like a tiger's nose.
Peter Schreyer is a famous man. He worked for Audi. Now he's responsible for Hyundai's and Kia's design.
You see this. It looks nice.
It's no supercar, so I shouldn't exaggerate.
For the kind of car, the bread-and-butter C segment everyone should be able to drive, it's really okay.
This takes us to the key question of this video.
Will the Kia Ceed ever be good enough to defeat the Golf?
That's the undisputed segment leader now.
When thinking about a C segment family car, you're thinking about a Volkswagen Golf.
Deserved or undeserved, that's the question.
The segment is very crowded.
Fast forward this part because it's a huge list of cars.
The segment is big in Europe.
13.9 percent, from the top of my head. I'm checking my cheat sheet with Dutch numbers.
13.9 percent of the European new car sales is the C1 segment; these hatchbacks.
It's even higher in the Netherlands.
Speaking of numbers, Kia sold more new cars in Europe than the Netherlands in total.
The key question: is the Ceed better than a Golf?
Kia definitely does a number of things better.
Warranty, for example. 7 years or 150,000 km (93,200 miles) of warranty.
Check the small print. People usually don't drive their new cars for 7 years.
Technically you'll only pay regular maintenance for a Kia Ceed and no crazy things.
Compare this to the costs of certain Golf models that have problems.
There are a number of things I sincerely think are good.
Safety features. Kia isn't ahead of the race, but they do have a number of nice things.
Lane keeping warning is standard.
I don't think that's the most brilliant thing. I switched it off while driving here.
It's nice to have, though.
Attention assist makes sure if I want coffee. I do.
Adaptive high beams, which is automatic.
It switches off the high beams when there's oncoming traffic.
It also has collision warning and it brakes to avoid a collision.
Volvos have these things standard.
Not the whole list, though, but these things aren't available or only optional on a lot of cars.
The Kia Ceed has it all standard.
These are boring things to use for selecting a car.
It has to be reliable and have warranty.
This leads us back to Biermann and his suspension.
He can do that.
You'd think the Kia Ceed would get boring on fun roads, but it doesn't.
This is a very nice car with good handling and feedback.
It's neutral, not much understeer.
I can take this roundabout all the way.
Eventually it'll understeer, but it's very okay.
I drove it on a small go-kart track and it didn't fail. It's that simple.
This is a fun part. You have to brake while steering.
The car doesn't like that very much.
Cars don't really like that, but this car does fine.
This is the lame version of track driving; driving a Kia Ceed on a go-kart track.
With an instructor.
We have to cool it.
This car would do well with more horsepower. You can...
It's faster when driving properly, but it hoons very well too.
This suspension begs for a hot hatch version with more power.
Who'd expect we'd say that about a Kia.
This is the 1.4 turbo engine.
It's a relatively new turbo engine with 138 hp.
It's not insanely fast, but nice enough.
0-100 kph (62 mph) takes 9.2 seconds and the top speed is 205 kph (127 mph).
This is the minimum of what I think is okay, but I know it's fine for most people.
In the end it does want to go.
Of course, other engines are available.
A 1-liter. I don't know if it has three or four cylinders.
I'm looking at Martijn, but he doesn't know either.
I think it's a 4-cylinder engine, but it could be a 3-cylinder engine.
It has 118 hp.
It's funny that the 1.4 has 40% more stroke volume, but not 40% more power. There's space there.
Two diesel engines are available, both a 1.6 with 113 or 134 hp.
I think only the 113 hp version comes to the Netherlands
if I understand these documents correctly.
You get to choose from two transmissions:
a 6-speed manual transmission or the 7-speed double clutch I'm driving now.
I works well. Not surprisingly well, but it has no faults.
The only thing that's a shame is the lack of flappy pedals.
You have to shift with the gear selector.
I could've shifted gears with a double-clutch transmission when entering a corner.
It should do so seamlessly. It'd be nice to have flappy pedals.
You're probably thinking "who cares". That's true.
The interior.
A 5 inch satnav system is standard.
That's for Mercedes A-Class drivers who want to make the switch.
It's surrounded by nice big bezels with buttons and such.
This car doesn't have that. This is the bigger screen.
I believe there are 8 and 10 inch versions. I think this is the 10 inch.
15 cm. I think that's about right.
The satnav works well. It also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
That's not the life-changing item in a car.
The rest of the interior.
It's not as spacious as the previous Cee'd. This surprised us.
It's still roomy enough.
The materials. This is no longer a cheap Asian.
There is no hard plastic or strange choices.
The dashboard has no real leather, but it has stitching. It looks good. Really nice.
In case you were worried, I found it.
Is it still called the Sportswagon or does it have a Sport powered tailgate?
I think we can make a theme of the things this Kia has and your car doesn't.
My car doesn't have this button.
This is a zen moment. It's not the fastest powered tailgate I've seen.
However... - A lot faster than a Lexus RX.
Martijn says it's a lot faster than a Lexus RX. He'd know.
Let me show you some things.
Look, this... Why won't it stay open? That's a shame.
The BMW 5 Series has this too.
You can store this thing. Very convenient.
You put the roller blind here.
In here. This is more intuitive than with the 5 Series. I get how it works.
There's a hidden compartment underneath.
Martijn used to work at the IKEA.
They have collections of roller blinds and shelves at IKEA and places like that.
It's convenient the Kia Ceed Sportswagon / Sporty Wagon has this.
It has a bigger trunk than the normal Ceed.
How much?
Over 100 liters extra. I don't know. It looks big and you can put a lot of stuff in there.
I think. - How much stuff?
This much. A package like this. I think you'll fit if you continue like this.
Of course I have something to complain about. Don't you worry.
There are a number of misses.
This display in a button adjusts the temperature.
I think it shows the temperature. It's almost impossible to read.
It's very dim. I don't think they tested it with the sun shining.
It's hard to read.
I have no flappy pedals, but I can shift gears manually.
When I do this, this shows I'm in fourth gear.
When I keep on driving, the number six starts blinking green.
It wants me to shift to sixth gear, but I don't remember which gear I was in.
It doesn't show me.
That's where the eco knights won from people who just want to drive.
When I want to shift gears myself, I want to see what's going on and what gear I'm in.
The tachometer tells me, but it'd be nice to see. Especially with a 7-speed transmission.
What else is there to complain about?
Compared to the Golf there's no wide range of engines.
There are only four engines and two transmissions to choose from.
A Golf has all kinds of varieties of diesel and gasoline engines, plug-in hybrid, and electric.
It's not yet available for the Kia Ceed.
You know the Asians always offer less choice in engines.
It's a German thing to offer 30 engines to choose from. That's a bit exaggerated.
It's not the most sexy car.
But is a standard Golf, Focus, or whatever's on the list... You can fast forward all those models.
Are those very sexy cars? No, not really.
They're nice cars that make you happy. You can go on vacation with your family and tow a travel trailer.
Things like that.
It is good.
I've been driving it for one day.
Sometimes you grow tired of a car, but this one is fun to drive.
It's nice. The seats are good.
There's not much to complain about the Kia Ceed.
It's a shame if you clicked this video to hear complaints.
Sorry, I have few. Prices.
The Dutch prices have crazy CO2 taxes.
The new WLTP test causes more crazy things.
Prices start at 21,500 euros now.
The most expensive version, a diesel engine and automatic transmission, costs 35,000 euros.
There's no model with a lot of horsepower.
138 hp.
That's not enough.
Not for me and not for other people.
A lot of Dutch people think it's okay, but Kia can take steps here.
There should be more choice for everyone.
They have a wagon, now for the big engines.
