ROADTRIP TO LE MANS 24H IN THE NEW 2018 BMW I8 COUPE!! *Accelerations | Sounds | Review* - Duration: 10:22.if you've been following my Instagram stories you will know exactly why I'm
here, at this moment in time we are going to Le Mans with BMW UK but if you haven't
seen my stories here's a little reminder of how I got right here
I've just been delivered a BMW i8 by BMW UK this is gonna be sick so I've kind of
kept this trip quite quiet only because it's kind of been quite last-minute and
we can be a very acquainted with that stunning stunning car of the colors I'm
just at the Channel Tunnel now waiting to together
so I guess the main noticeable difference to the BMW i8
from its predecessor the pre-facelift version the car is lighter it's
about 1500 kilos for the coupe and the roadsters a little bit more than that
because of the roof but they've obviously gone for the 20 inch wheels on
this car so these wheels are lightweight wheels they all have a purpose and their
one kilogram lighter than the old wheels on the old i8 more weight has been saved
by the use of a carbon tub and aluminium sub frames and lightweight panels so the
i8 still has its iconic kind of anti drag through the actual bodywork and you
got to think that that car when it first came out was four years ago
I mean how it looks like you came from another world in my opinion it was it's
really futuristic and I'm not just saying that and even four years on with
the facelift has come out in my opinion it still looks it's all looks epic okay so
I know you're thinking it's a bit lighter it's a facelift version so what
else is there that warrants the hundred and twelve odd thousand pound price tag
to get this thing on the road well we'll jump in the car and I'll explain a bit
more about what they've done to the engine of this car and how it's a little
bit different to the last one getting in and out of the ia it's still a bit of a
challenge but I've learned since the last time I drove the eye that there's a
there's a connect there's a technique to getting in and out of it you kind of
have to open the doors turn in and slide into the car and if you do that then
you're laughing and the same thing to get out you kind of do a right right
hand side slide and and yeah it's just funny that there's a there's a technique
to getting in and out of these cars but as I said earlier on so what BMW done to
kind of the engine to improve it on the facelift version so one of the things
that the i8 was criticized for in the past was the fact that it's a hybrid
it's effectively a super kite she's got the 911 performance as it does zero to
60 and 4.4 seconds which is lightning quick and but the part about the hybrid
was the bit that a lot of people found a little difficult to digest now what do I
mean by that the battery itself on the older cars didn't last that long so you
couldn't really get much of a drive when you went full electric now that's
slightly changed in in this version of the car so BMW have put in a bigger
battery in this which means that you are pretty much guaranteed a 25-mile full
electric drive and you can drive in full electric up until 75 miles an hour
now 25 miles on full electric doesn't sound like much but for most of us an
average commute one way that's about right so bigger battery happy days and
obviously with more miles on an electric charge that means you lower the co2
emissions as well sanella ask myself the question with this kind of a car up BMWs
hybrid supercar of the future what's it like how does it feel just driving it in
full electric so I'm gonna do that now so we're gonna put it into into drive
I'm gonna put it in E Drive only right so now this is completely solely electric
drive and it's so silent it's great now this is an all-wheel drive car and when
I mean all-wheel drive all wheel drive is all drive but you've got the 1.5
liter engine in the rear which powers the rear wheels and you've got the
electric motor in the front the rear of the rear engine gives you around about
230 horsepower what's the front it's around about 133 I believe so that means
when you put couple them together then you are effective running a 360
horsepower car which is fantastic it's lightweight 1500 kilos isn't really
that heavy when you think about in the grand scheme of things right now I'm
driving it in electric mode which means I'm saving fuel and saving the
environment all the cows are happy out in the field next to me but what also
means is that I can step it into sport now once I'm in sport the engine turns
itself on and I'm using all of the power from the battery as well as the engine
and the thing is with having a hybrid kind of motor you get a lot of low-end
torque the torque on this car is fantastic over I believe it's around 450
Newton meters and you get that so low as well which is absolutely epic I really
really enjoy that and one of the things that I like about the ia is that it has
such a road presence now just driving it down here the I mean in the UK I was
getting a hell of a lot of looks with this car but the moment I've got onto
the French roads bar the roads are on now because there's no one on them but
people just thought and stare there were people taking photos of this as I came
off the channel tunnel you're a tunnel sorry now the one thing
that I do think is a is a little bit steep and hard to swallow is the is the
price tag to buy one new is 112 thousand I think it's upwards of 120 grand for
the Roadster now I get you know understand there's a lot that goes into
making these cars and I understand that you know it's the flagship supercar BMW
but it's still it's pretty steep however if you do like these cars if you do like
the iron meets the first generation is have now dropped down to about 50 thousand
so you can buy yourself a hybrid supercar which looks beautiful
sounds great from inside I'll touch on that a second for 50k and fuel
consumption wise you're laughing now BMW claimed at its peak this car will do 134
miles to the gallon not sure how that's come up but what I can tell
you for sure is driving is this down - to France
the petrol hasn't really moved if with you and I'd expected it to I would
expect it to move quite a bit which is great and that's the whole purpose
having a hybrid motor you whack it into comfort mode and all you're doing is
driving around you're using both the front engine up front electric engine in
the rear petrol powered engine and they kind of alternate whichever is the most
efficient which is fantastic quiet mode again no so now we're doing the hybrid
but I don't want to do that I want full sport everything
it's that that low-end pickup is brilliant it's very it's a very torquey
engine the brakes are good too on this car it's quite I wouldn't it's not
really that bumpy actually I don't think I'm giving the car this justice when I
say it's a little bit bumpy but it's in sport mode
but the sound
and again the sound is it's amplified from within the car
and you can hear it it just sounds great
but when you get outside the car it doesn't sound anywhere near is
throaty but again you know you're I'm nitpicking I'm nitpicking with the car
now and I think when you take all of the things I've just mentioned into account
it package it set itself up into not only what is a beautifully stunning car
but it is it's the future I mean let's let's not mess around 2040 will come as
much as it hurts all of us petrol heads 2040 will come and it's gonna be cars
like this they're gonna propel us into where we need to be with the hybrid
supercars obviously you've got other cars you've got the Ferraris it's a
hybrid supercar p1 hybrid supercar but this is a great car as I said earlier on
50 thousand gets you one of these secondhand so that's my quick and dirty
review of the BMW i8 the new facelift 2018-19 version and I hope you've
enjoyed it guys so now we're heading to learn more I'm going to continue my road
