Auto news on Youtube Dec 1 2018

hello everyone this week I really should be doing some sanding and bodywork to

get this car closer to paint but I just can't stop welding all right

what's wrong with me okay the truth is I I did order some new sanding blocks and

some filler some better filler material and it actually hasn't arrived yet it

should have been here last week I am going to be mixing in some bodywork and

sanding but I am also gonna continue to work on this chassis improvement sort of

strengthening the chassis adding provisions for things like through the

body sway bar I'm gonna be adding the strut braces in the front doing some

tricks on the back end like I talked about

RSR kind of bracing so that's gonna continue I do want to get this thing

painted today I'm gonna work on those front strut towers last week I left off

with this piece this is a strengthening plate that's gonna go on top of the

front strut tower and I cut it out with the plasma cutter and I just need to

kind of trim the inside a little bit just put a few marks on the plate here

with my sharpie to highlight the areas I need to open up a little bit please take

a moment to subscribe if you haven't already done so you know this channel is

all about motivating and inspiring you to build your dream car and even though

it seems like I'm procrastinating on a painting process which I am it will get

done and I'm gonna learn as much as you do as we get through this so thank you

again and let's get to work and now this fits really well over this

opening on the strut tower so now I just want to try to maybe pre bend it just a

little bit because it has a lot to has a lot to do to meet the shape of this I

mentioned last week I would you know get it as close as possible and then you

know weld in the areas that are fitting tight and then just hammer as we go so

having the the heat and the shape of the car to help form it might be the best

way to go but I'm going to try to pre Bend it here on my bench just real quick

if you're interested how I formed this this sheet I mean I was able to get a

pretty good curve on it it's heavy gauge material so it's it's it's hard to form

it takes a lot of force so I have this rotor in my vise clamped down to the

bench and then the trick here is I don't know if I can hold out there the trick

here is to use a heavy counterweight on one side and then form it around using a

hammer on the free side

okay I've got this plate formed as best I can and it's fitting it's fitting okay

here in the car it feels that's really well against the inner fender flange

which which is good so I think the plan and I'm not 100% sure this is gonna work

normally when I do stuff I have a pretty good idea how it's gonna turn out this

one I'm actually a little bit worried okay here's the plate that I'm trying to

install it fits nicely around the top circle here and then back here in the

back where it goes into this this fender flange it's fitting really really nice

so I haven't formed well along here and all the way here so that's about you

know let's call it 40% good fit and then I knew that this portion here was cut a

little long and I plan to roll it over as much as it is the material it will

allow me but if it won't Bend I'm gonna have to cut it and just weld it on and

then back here is where it starts to deviate and this is a compound curve so

not only does it Bend this way but it bends this way and I'm gonna have to

close up this gap I can almost stick my finger in there once this is welded in

the back it should form down and conform to the car but that's the part I'm

worried about I don't know how easy it's going to be able to form it down I may

have to put either weight on the on the strut or use a dolly on the back side so

let's see what happens plan B is whatever I weld I'll have to

unweld I'll have to cut it out so I'm not going to do continuous welds here

I'm only gonna do enough so that it'll have support to bend the plate I am

thinking ahead if I have to cut it out I don't want to weld it solid so let's see

how it goes

okay the first round of welding is done I got a pretty solid weld here really

solid back here little tack weld here another pretty solid tack right here and

a few here on this inner circle so that's enough to support it while I sort

of hammer this side back down so you can see it's a little springy I don't have

anything to hit it with but it's it's definitely springy it's got some space

underneath there but like I said before I don't want to just crush everything by

hammering it down so I'm going to do some work on the underside in fact I

think what I'm gonna do is I'm going to open up the three holes that need to be

there anyways for the strut bolts I'm gonna clamp in a camber strut plate and

lock it down so it has some structure to it and then I'm gonna hammer the rest of

this way down it seems like it's gonna be okay

I got a fitting tied up here in the back so let's just do that

bolting that down really did the trick I got I got this much tighter or down here

this is still overhanging a little bit I'm gonna try to roll this down a little

bit

okay I was lucky to get this to fit down flush all the way around and see it's

welded all the way along the backside for the majority of it there's a small

section there right where the hole is comes around fully fully welded down

blending in with this factory seam right here so I did use the TIG welder a

little bit on the top and I just touched up some of the MIG welds where there was

a little bit of a start and stop action but really happy with the way this came

out if it wasn't for bolting it down I never could have shaped it with just the

hammer alone so the hammer worked but bolting of the the stock camber plate

down really really cinched it down I'm gonna show you from underneath okay from

down here you can see that this is just in stock form I was I was able to not

distort any of the the stock sheetmetal and if you look closely you can see I

still have some trimming to do on those square holes I just kind of roughed him

out so I get those bolts in place okay so putting that plate on top of the

strut towers I think it was well worth it I did measure it before I installed

it was about nine ounces so for nine ounces and you know zero cost I think

it's a worthwhile upgrade not sure that I'm gonna be using the coilovers but

even without the coilovers I think it gives a much more stable surface and I

think it I think it was worthwhile so let me know what you think in the
