50 years of tradition. Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the guy in charge of this
redesign. That would be the redesign of the Porsche 911. This eighth-generation
iteration of the rear-engine classic sports a turbocharged flat-six engine
that produces gobs of Autobahn worthy horsepower. That's 23 more than the
previous generation. Equipped with Porsche's world-class dual-clutch PDK
transmission, which incidentally is now eight speeds instead of seven, this baby
hits 60 from a standstill in 3.5 seconds. You add the four-wheel drive on the 4s
and that's faster. And don't worry for all your purists out there the manual
transmission is coming later on next year. While it still has that timeless
shape of 911s of yore, this one has some differences. It's wider at both front and
rear and now sports staggered wheels, a first for Porsche. The rear variable
position spoiler and the continuous light bar changed the back end looks
significantly. The interior gets a lot of changes too with styling reminiscent of
the 911 from the 70s, but with digital driver information. This 911 is filthy
with new tech and safety features, some of which come as standard equipment that
include Wet Mode which detects water on the road and adjusts brakes and
stability control accordingly. Night Vision Assist and adaptive cruise
control are available as options. The only thing that's not so new is the
sticker price. The Carrera S base price starts around a $113,200
The all-wheel-drive 4s will cost over $7,000
more. Fifty years is an insane amount of time for a model to be around,
so Porsche must be doing something right. Now we just can't wait to drive it!
I pick the yellow one.
