welcome back everybody mark with exotic car play place again today to welcome
you guys to the BMW x3 m40i this is the hot version the M version that I want to
talk about today
so today we're gonna get into the engine design of this car what is so special
about this engine in this vehicle that makes it stand out heads and tails above
the rest we're gonna get into that let's get started so come on in let's take a
closer look at this engine right here so I'm gonna pop the hood and what do we
have over here this is the new b-58 engine the third generation of the
inline 6-cylinder turbo now produces a lot more power than the previous
outgoing generation n55 engine this engine has a few different power output
configurations you could get these engines with 322 335 horsepower 355 and
the 382 horsepower now the 380 - did you know that this is the engine that the
new Toyota Supra is coming with yes they've elected to use BMWs b-58 engine
slightly tuned up of course to provide their drivetrain for that hot new car
from Japan so this is the actual drivetrain for that car
that being said there's a 20% boost increase from previous generation in the
n55 it's of a closed deck design and runs a compression ratio of 11 to 1 as
well the overall displacement has been tweaked a little bit and now that's up
from 2979 to 2998 CCs overall that's also been tweaked now
it also has an intercooler a water to air intercooler which is designed to
help cool you know under the higher boost conditions that's going to help
this whole thing stay together it's also integrated with the intake plenum so
it's all of a one-piece modular type design should help with overall
reliability unfortunately if something fails there you're replacing the holes
on slot but time will tell on the reliability of that and the reduced
plenum air capacity is really intended to reduce turbo lag so with this car you
would expect far less turbo lag and I can honestly confirm that after driving
this car for a while it actually produces a lot less turbo lag than even
its predecessors which were known for almost a lag less power delivery so this
one as well as a double vanos nothing really unique there in terms of the BMW
world but it uses the Valvetronic variable valve lift adjustment so that's
also incorporated here and is able to rev to a massive 7,000 rpm not bad for a
turbo engine of course
you can see it goes very very quickly it doesn't take time to get up to speed it
also has an engine mounted heat encapsulation system which is that
intended really to reduce wear and tear on cold startups and also helps with
overall emissions so there's a lot of things that have gone on in this new
engine to actually improve on its overall reliability under hard driving
conditions to reduce boost heat and heat soak as well as overall longevity for
the engine they're utilizing that that overall engine block that is also
coupled up which is also shared by the diesel version of this the diesel
version also utilizes the same crankcase setup which is a lot more robust so I
would expect overall this engine is going to last a long long time
so everybody I hope you enjoyed the video I really hope you loved what I had
to introduce here at the end of the day this great new hot inline 6-cylinder
turbo single turbo engine is the latest from BMW and it holds some great promise
for some great things so far not really that tune-able we'll see what the
aftermarket has for it but for now it seems like they've addressed some of the
issues that you've normally seen some of the issues from the n55 and definitely
vast changes from the n54 for reliability so thanks again everybody
make sure you if you liked the video you make sure you give it a thumbs up like
subscribe to the channel and don't forget to hit that little notifications
bell I'd like to hear from you guys again and make sure you come back and
check out the next great video thanks again
