My name is Kia Jones.

I am a communication major and I'm a junior.

I work at the Career Development Center and so what I do is - I'm a student worker and

I help students when they come in and they need help with their resumes, when they need

help with cover letters, when they need help looking for jobs, applying for jobs.

Just anything really career related I can help them with.

So you said you were kind of using this resume for internships and stuff?

I've been working here for over a year now and I enjoy it because I really like the interaction

aspect.

I really enjoy helping people.

I've actually had a couple of students who have come up to me after they came in.

I've gotten their resume like checked and stuff and said 'remember that job I applied

for' and I'll be like 'yeah' and they'll be like 'I got it' and I'll be like 'oh great'!

Just seeing them kind of furthering their careers and achieving their goals is really

fulfilling for me because I know I wouldn't be able to have gotten where I am without help.

Just seeing that I helped them as well is really just kind of nice.

I recently won the Students Affairs Employee of the Month award and I was kind of surprised

by it, but I was more pleasantly surprised.

It really just kind of symbolizes student workers really who kind of go above and beyond

in terms of their like job experiences and just in terms of working in the office, like

students who aren't just - you know - working, but who are actually trying to actively improve

not only the office, but the students that they assist as well.

I'm currently a member of the Black Student Union (BSU) and we're preparing for our Black

History Month events, so we have a couple of things planned for February that I'm really

excited about and then I'm also a CAP student, so I'm a student in the Honors Program, so

I take different honors classes.

UIS has taught me that anyone can be a leader.

I was a person who I didn't mind necessarily being a leader, but I also kind of stepped

back and let other people take the lead.

So I'm like, 'oh they can handle that.'

This isn't a thing for me.

But what it's taught me is that if you want to you can take that leadership role and a

leader doesn't look like - there's no cookie cutter person that looks like a leader.

I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason.

So I came here for a reason.

I ended up being who I am right now for a reason.

I am close to being that person who I have always wanted to be, so just the growth that

I've received from being at UIS - I don't think I would have been able to get that growth

anywhere else.

[Baseball ] KIA 김기훈, 포스트 양현종? 선배의 땀과 눈물에 답 있다 - Duration: 7:53.

KIA 타이거즈 고졸루키 김기훈이 오키나와 캠프에서 뜨거운 시선을 받고 있다.

바로 제 2의 양현종이 될 수 있다는 기대감이다.

그에게 양현종은 광주 동성고 12년 선배이다.

같은 좌완투수에 같은 고교 출신인데다 직구를 앞세우는 파워피쳐형도 비슷하다.

양현종은 2차 1번(당시 1차 지명 2명은 오준형과 정영일)으로 지명을 받았고 김기훈은 1차 지명이다.

당당한 성격도 비슷하다.

양현종의 2007년 첫 해는 어떤 모습이었을까? 양현종은 스프링캠프에서 좌완 원포인트 릴리프로 발탁을 받았다.

당시 진해수(LG)와 경쟁을 벌였고 시범경기에서 1군 요원으로 낙점을 받았다.

그러다 개막후 선발진에 구멍이 생기자 선발투수로 나서더니 4월 12일 광주 현대전에서 5⅔이닝 동안 4피안타(4볼넷) 2탈삼진 무실점으로 깜짝 호투했다.

서정환 감독은 양현종을 5선발투수로 낙점했다.

그러나 이후 4경기에서는 모두 5회를 소화하지 못하고 무너졌다.

고졸투수로 마운드 운영이 쉽지 않았고 제구력이 문제였다.

결국 2군으로 한 차례 내려갔고 복귀할 때 다시 불펜요원으로 돌아왔다.

패전처리도 했지만 꾸준히 경기에 나갔다.

확실히 직구 하나는 일품이었다.

시즌 최하위가 확정적인 상황에서 다시 선발투수로 나섰다.

9월 29일 대전구장에서 열린 한화전에서 5이닝 동안 2피안타 3사사구 1실점으로 막고 승리투수가 됐다.

시즌 30번째 등판이자 6번째 선발등판에서 거둔 값진 첫 승이자 데뷔 첫 선발승이었다.

31경기(선발 6경기)에 출전해 1승, 평균자책점 4.17의 만족스러운 결과였다.

양현종은 첫 해의 값진 경험을 앞세워 2008년 48경기에 뛰었다.

조범현 감독과 간베 토시오 코치의 각별한 관심을 받으며 주축 불펜요원으로 활약했다.

그러면서도 선발투수로 9경기에 나섰다.

성적은 5패 5홀드, 평균자책점 5.83을 기록했다. 불만스러운 성적이었다.

그러나 데뷔 2년의 경험을 바탕으로 2009년부터 붙박이 선발투수로 12승을 따내며 에이스의 길에 들어섰다.

당시 양현종은 직구 평균 140km대 중반의 정도의 볼을 뿌렸고, 커브를 주무기로 삼았다.

슬라이더와 체인지업을 던지기도 했다.

직구의 위력이 좋을 때는 삼진율이 높았지만 제구가 흔들리는 경우도 잦았다. 높은 볼넷 비율을 기록했다.

양현종은 이후 어깨통증에 시달리는 등 주춤했지만 2014시즌부터는 완전한 에이스로 자리를 잡아 대한민국 에이스로 성장했다.

볼넷도 줄고 투구수 조절도 잘해 이닝이터로 자리잡았다.

김기훈은 지난 14일 스프링캠프 대외 실전에서 첫 등판을 했다.

야쿠르트를 상대해 1이닝을 무실점으로 막았다.

긴장한 탓이 역력해 볼넷을 3개나 내주었다.

상대가 정교한 일본타자라는 점, 연습경기이지만 첫 등판이라는 점이 그의 제구력을 흔들리기 했다.

스스로 "생각과 달리 몸이 긴장했다"고 말했다.

직구 최고구속은 147km를 찍었다. 고무적인 내용도 있었다.

변화구는 커브, 체인지업, 슬라이더를 던졌다.

일본타자들의 커트에 막혀 33개의 볼을 던졌다.

눈여겨볼 대목은 흔들리면서도 실점하지 않았다는 점이다.

1사후 볼넷을 내주자 빠른 견제동작으로 주자를 솎아냈다.

이후 볼넷 2개를 내주고도 마지막 타자는 범타로 잡았다.

김기훈은 양현종의 첫 해와 비슷한 관심과 기대를 받으며 프로생활을 시작하고 있다.

김기태 감독도 "모처럼 전국구 투수가 왔다"면서 기대를 걸고 있다.

선동렬 전 국가대표 감독이 "1군에서 통한다"고 극찬해 관심도가 더욱 높아졌다.

올해는 양현종의 첫 해처럼 중간요원으로 기용될 것으로 보인다.

상황에 따라 선발투수로도 나설 수도 있다.

특히 캠프부터 많은 관심을 받아 부담도 클 것이다.

그가 눈여겨볼 대목은 에이스 양현종이 그냥 만들어진 것은 아니라는 점이다.

양현종은 실패와 좌절을 하면서도 끊임없는 성장을 했다.

엄청난 땀과 남모를 눈물도 배여있다.

경기를 마치면 수건을 들고 어둠속에서 새도우 피칭을 거듭했다.

원정경기면 호텔 옥상에서 했다.

캠프에서는 어깨가 아픈데도 불펜 투구를 하면서 눈물을 흘리기도 했다.

지금도 시즌을 마치면 어깨 강화를 위해 많은 공을 들이고 있다.

가족과 주변을 배려하는 모범적인 생활 태도도 마찬가지이다.

김기훈이 진짜 따라갈 선배의 궤적이다.
