Honda to close Swindon car plant by 2021 - Duration: 1:48.Japanese carmaker Honda has confirmed it's closing its car plant in the southern English
town of Swindon by 2021 - a move likely to affect about three and a half thousand jobs.
For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram…
Aram…
A huge blow to Britain's auto industry….
That's right Mark…
Honda's Swindon plant is the firm's only car factory in the EU and builds around 160,000
Honda Civics per year.
About 90 percent of them are exported to the EU and the U.S.
The move will not only threaten three and a half thousand jobs at the plant, but also
a similar number of workers in the supply chain.
Honda's CEO Takahiro Hachigo announced the move on Tuesday, saying it was due to global
changes in the car industry, adding it had nothing to do with Brexit.
"This decision is aimed at optimising our global production bases and their ability
and to accelerate our shift to the electrical vehicle.
The timing of this announcement came as we decided on our production bases.
So, this is not related to Brexit."
However, industry experts say Brexit must have been a factor in Honda's decision because
the merit of having easy access to the lucrative European market would disappear after the
UK leaves the EU.
The timing of the announcement also comes as the British government struggles to finalize
a divorce deal.

2019 Honda Civic Review: Back With A Bang? | ZigWheels.com - Duration: 13:42.Hello friends welcome to the ZigWheels show today we're going to be taking a
look at a new executive sedan that's coming to us from the Land of the Rising
Sun this Japanese sedan is going to go up against the likes of Toyotas Corolla
Altis the Skoda Octavia and Hyundai Elantra it is that is one way to
introduce the Civic but a better way is with excitement
it is the Honda Civic that is the proper introduction for this car a car that
comes from Japan but isn't one that's just talking
sensibility it's a car that especially in the Indian context has spoken more to
us here than here so the Civic where should we start
the most important bit about the exciting Civic is practicality and as
we've known with the Civic that has been a bit of a weak point and the boot space
here on offer is 430 liters which is still not great it's less than the
competition and less than its own sibling the Honda City the practical and
sensible approach stop it it's the Civic
ground clearance that has been an issue with the Civic in the past but here this
India spec Civic has been modified to suit our conditions because of which the
front end has been raised by 20 millimetres and the rear has been raised
by 15 millimetres the exact ground clearance numbers have not been shared
with us but Honda do say that the ground clearance performance would be on par
with the city we were a bit cautious at first then got a bit braver and
adventurous and a civic kept it's very clean what else must be talked about the Civic
no not that what matters is the way the Civic reaches out grabs hold of
your eyeballs and turns your head as it passes by look at the face now
strong it's got really aggressive lines you got a headlamp full LED headlamp
here on the top end variants it's a very striking look but what actually makes
the Civic stand out this time around is the profile this is just looking so much
more aggressive because compared to the previous generation the ninth not the
eighth which we had in India this car has grown longer in terms of
the wheelbase overall length is up by 100 millimetres but at the same time
here at the hood it is lower by about 35 millimeters and the roofline is down by
20 millimetres which gives it a more sporty almost like a coupe a like shape
the crisp lines make the swoopy shape look strong real strong and those 17
inch alloy wheels on the stop invariant look very sci-fi XL size tail lamps with
LEDs look cool but a bit out of proportion on this tight rear but the
lasting memory of the Civic will be this the swoopy Silla head
but that has certain implications when it comes to passenger comfort if you have all the
members in the family getting in and out for them will be a bit more difficult
because you do sit quite low here in the Civic but once inside you will find that
there's plenty of knee room Headroom there might be a bit tight for taller
occupants this back seat we'd recommend best for two adults because there is a
hump in the flow here which is something that we do not see too often in Honda's
and well we would like to call out one thing and that is the middle passenger
also gets a three-point seatbelt but there is no headrest to the middle
occupant and the cabin really doesn't feel all that wide despite Honda
claiming it to be wider by 40 millimetres and then there are air con
vans to keep you comfy but there are no charging points here
now let's bring on the excitement and at first you might think that there are no
USB ports up here in the front either but take a look over here this floating
center console it has a separate storage area where you have the ports in for the
HDMI and there's a little hole over here which allows the cables to run up here
if you want to keep the phone go in 200 fashion genius in terms of packaging and
convenience so yeah storage you've got plenty of it
another large glove box here with another USB port there good door pockets
so very practical on that front and if you are expecting to be wowed by the
Civic like the first gen did well this time around for starters it feels like a
Honda shirt built to last with a sensible premium quotient and the
angular design looks like a sophisticated evolution of the Honda
cities noise well it might not blow your mind
but it is impressive nonetheless you get a completely digital display which is
standard here across the range which shows you a whole bunch of information
including even from your phone and all which is linked to your infotainment
screen here the seven-inch display well we're not huge fans of it the resolution
could definitely be better and we won't impress with it in the CRV either but
one thing that we loved in the CRV and is available here is Honda's lanewatch
which is just a genius system using a camera on the passenger side orvm
gives you a live feed whenever you're changing lanes or just want to park
right so that is great and wow you also get two zone climate control you get
these lovely seats which might be little small for larger passengers but then you
also have the sunroof which of course gives you that Wow sensation
and talking about lighting Honda could have offered and been lighting in the
cabin that would have just made a field that much more premium right and of
course the passenger seat could have also been power adjustable
now talking about adjusting seats get ready to feel like a boy racer here in the Civic
because the seating position is properly low Honda's says the hip point is 20
millimetres lower which means for a shorty like me I have to use this
powered see adjustment bump the height up of bit and still because you're
sitting pretty low you have to move the seat back so that your legs can really
stretch out and that of course means to get the right sitting position you also
have a tilt and telescopic steering wheel right so right let's get going
as you would have guessed there's a new engine under the hood of the Civic and
that's the 1.6 diesel which we've also seen on the CRV
one difference here is that the diesel is available only with the 6-speed manual gearbox there is no
automatic on offer so this engine is smooth but exciting
I know 1.6 diesel crv 120 PS 300 Newton meters of torque not going to sound very
exciting and to be honest it is it but if you're just thinking of a machine to
use everyday be in the city out on the highway it just cruise with and chill
out with this does a really good job the drivability even at low speeds is good
just keep in mind the gear ratios are actually spread out quite a bit so that
can cruise comfortably on the highway which means every now and then when you want
to make an overtake or really rush things along you'll have to step down a gear
how tall is the gearing well you can hit 90 kph in second but that's what
allows Honda to claim a segment topping 26.8 KPL crazy but something else was
making us go WOW on this drive well one thing is for sure the steering feels fun
it's got the right amount of weight to get a good feel for what's happening at
the wheels up ahead and here on the diesel variant with this manual gearbox
the position of the gear leaver is perfect although the shifts are a bit
clunky
and since we're talking about fun and performance shall we check out the petrol
I'll say it again the steering is quake and fearsome and the petrol is
lighter by 53 kilograms and you can feel it
well switching from the diesels straight to the petrol one thing becomes
immediately a pan it this is lighter to steer into corners it feels that much
more agile a little bit more wrigley and on that note I must tell you that this
has Vehicle Stability assess some form of ESP basically to keep things clean
when you're really hustling it
the electric brains on the Civic has Honda's agile handling assist it kind of
acts like a slip differential it helps you keep your lines clean
and special mention goes out to the brakes there's great feel and bite
there's also six airbags to make you feel all the more relaxed but what about
performance the petrols 141 PS of power and 173 Newton meters of torque sounds
familiar doesn't it now the 1.8 litre petrol that we have
here on the Civic is the same one that we saw 13 years ago few tweaks to the
intake and exhaust to change the part we make this more responsive but I think
what will jar for a lot of you know Civic enthusiasts out there is that it's
only available with a CVT
sure the CVT has seven steps and you of course are paddle shifters which is well
a civic speciality was the first to bring it in this segment right to India
and so it gives you a bit more control but it doesn't make it fun to drive what
this does well is everyday commuting cruising out on the highway short if you
want to make an overtake in a hurry you're still gonna have to plan that out
a little bit
the CVT could be a downer for enthusiasts but it is smooth and thrifty
the company claimed efficiency is three point six kilometres per leader more
than before
so this Honda has the potential to be a truly exciting civic honda please just
give us a manual with the petrol that will be all
you'll know the cost to ride but focusing on what it is here and now it
is an engaging car and yes for every day commuting it also offers one additional
plus and that's about the experience in the back and that's somebody here to
tell us about that
अगर रियर सीट कम्फर्ट की बात करू actually अगर आपको हिंदी रिव्यु देखना है आप CarDekho पर जाके देख लीजिये
but if I were to talk about rear seat comfort yes the Civic is comfortable and
relaxing place to be in noise insulation is good and the suspension manages to
isolate you from the worst potholes that you've seen so yeah Civic can be a
worthy companion for your everyday commutes even if it involves really
rough roads
that's because the bump stops for the India Civic are longer by 15 millimetres
suspension travel has been increased to yes the Civic has been adapted for India
but only 30% has been localized and even low variance won't be stripped down so
expect prices to range between 17 to 22 lakhs so is the tenth generation Civic
the practical one well if you look at the boot space it really isn't that much
of a step up ah forget about all that the back seat it couldn't definitely
done better I mean you have more knee room but it doesn't feel all that much
more spacious under that support could have been better but where there's a
distinct step up is in terms of ground clearance which makes it that much more
practical in our road conditions and of course as the introduction of a diesel
engine yeah an automatic would have been great but that would've also bumped up
prices even then the Civic isn't just a sedan it is an emotion and this Honda
ends up bringing some sparkle to the world of sedans and it reminds us that
the Civic despite its shortcomings is something truly worth getting excited
over

Verstappen delighted with Red Bull-Honda's 'calm' start - Duration: 3:17.Verstappen has not troubled the top of the times in his RB15, ending his second day of testing fifth-fastest and one second slower than pacesetter Daniil Kvyat in the Toro Rosso, which is also powered by Honda
He lost time in the morning due to "small things" but racked up more than 100 laps to take his tally for the week to 237
"I'm just very happy with the way we're working together," said Verstappen. "It's all very focused, and calm
Everybody knows their job. So that's good. "Talking about laptimes is always difficult
For us what is important is to try to do a lot of laps and to do different set-ups on the car, to see which direction we have to go
" Honda described its work on the third day of testing as engine function and system checks
It has also started to optimise the engine to each driver's style as its new partnership with Red Bull continues to run trouble-free
Asked if he had been able to run the Honda at a higher power mode yet, Verstappen said: "Of course not, but I think nobody [has]
"What is most important is everything is reliable and the car is working well. We didn't have a lot of issues and if you do more than 100 laps on a day it's always positive
" Verstappen also downplayed a suggestion Red Bull was suffering from vibrations at the rear of the car
"It's always like that," he said. "People always think they know better." Honda has almost matched Mercedes and Renault for mileage logged across two teams so far
Wednesday's benchmark-setter Kvyat completed 137 laps, only one fewer than the busiest driver – Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen
"I don't know what settings I was running, it is up to the engineers to analyse this kind of data, [but] it had all the reliability to do all those laps," said Kvyat
"We did many laps today. That is what I am looking for. It is important and Honda is providing us with that opportunity

It's Official: Honda Will Shut Down UK Swindon Plant In 2021 - Duration: 2:47.As expected, due to the strong possibility of a no-deal Brexit, there's more bad news for the United Kingdom and its automotive industry as Honda has confirmed plans to close its Swindon plant in 2021
Following yesterday's reports, Honda has gone official with an announcement regarding the restructuring of its global manufacturing network
According to the press release, the move comes as the company "accelerates its commitment to electrified cars, in response to the unprecedented changes in the global automotive industry
"The significant challenges of electrification will see Honda revise its global manufacturing operations, and focus activity in regions where it expects to have high production volumes," reads the press release
Surprisingly, there's no mention of Brexit whatsoever, but considering that automakers have from the first moment warned about the adverse impact on their local production, this does seem to be the most likely reason
As a result, Honda has informed its UK employees that it intends to close the Swindon vehicle manufacturing plant in 2021 when the current models' production lifecycle ends
The UK plant is the global production hub for the tenth-generation Civic, building both the Civic hatchback and the Civic Type R performance variant
This will no doubt be a huge blow to the UK automotive industry, as Honda's Swindon plant currently manufactures 150,000 cars per year and employs approximately 3,500 people
Honda said consultation activity with potentially affected employees will begin today
And while they won't build cars in the UK from 2021, Honda's European headquarters will still be based on the UK
In addition to the closure of the Swindon plant, Honda's global restructuring plans involve its operations in Turkey
The company said it would stop making the Civic Sedan at its Gebze plant in 2021.However, the release says that they intend to continue its business operations there, where they currently produce 38,000 vehicles per year
According to the carmaker, "Honda Turkiye A.S.will continue to hold constructive dialogue with Turkish stakeholders during this period

Honda Australia: 'No changes' for Civic Type R despite UK plant closure | CarAdvice - Duration: 1:16.'We will continue to take the Civic Type R from Europe throughout the current model's production lifecycle and we intend for the next generation model to also have a home in Australia,' says Stephen Collins, director for Honda's local division
Honda Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to the currently UK-sourced Civic Type R, despite its global parent announcing the factory that makes it will shut its doors in 2021
The Swindon plant is the only Honda facility that makes the Civic Type R (pictured) currently, though the company's local director, Stephen Collins, says the current model will see out its lifecycle and confirmed plans for a next-generation model after that
"We are aware of the changes announced yesterday regarding Honda's global business activities
Honda Australia currently receives the Civic Type R from the Swindon manufacturing plant in the UK," Collins said in a statement
"There are no changes that impact Honda Australia or our customers – we will continue to take the Civic Type R from Europe throughout the current model's production lifecycle and we intend for the next generation model to also have a home in Australia
" "We will also continue to support Honda's management team as they restructure our global automobile production operations to ensure Honda remains strong and can continue offering products that fulfill the needs of our customers around the world," he added
Overnight Honda announced it would be closing its UK factory along with its facility in Turkey
The Swindon plant in the UK currently produces around 160,000 Civics each year, while the Turkish factory has an output of about 40,000 units annually across several model lines
Unlike other brands, though, Honda has been quick to blame issues with the global car market rather than Brexit
More than 4500 jobs will be lost across the British and Turkish factories (3500 in the UK, 1000 in Turkey), though it's unclear where vehicles will be sourced from post-2021
In Australia, the majority of Honda's models are sourced from Thailand, with the exception of the Odyssey people mover (Japan) and obviously the Civic Type R (UK)

Honda officially closes UK manufacturing operations | CarAdvice - Duration: 1:28.Yesterday's rumours are today's news. Honda has officially announced its Swindon operation will stop at the end of the Civic's lifecycle, a decision costing 3500 British jobs
It's not just vehicle manufacturing in Australia that has felt the strain in recent years, with Honda officially announcing this morning it will close its UK plant in the English town of Swindon
While claiming the closure has 'nothing to do with Brexit', chief executive Takahiro Hachigo did confirm 3500 jobs would be lost
It's the first time Honda has closed an overseas manufacturing operation, hinting at a tough period not just for the company itself, but perhaps auto manufacturing globally over the next few years
"Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd. has today informed employees of its proposal to close its Swindon vehicle manufacturing plant in the UK in 2021, at the end of the current model's production lifecycle," his statement said
The Swindon plant churns out 160,000 Civics each year, and the plant is Honda's only site in the European Union
According to a BBC report, Ian Howells, senior vice-president for Honda in Europe, said: "we're seeing unprecedented change in the industry on a global scale
We have to move very swiftly to electrification of our vehicles because of demand of our customers and legislation"
From the moment whispers first started the closure was likely to happen, speculation centred around the numerous Brexit issues as the reason, but Honda has been adamant in denying this
Still, workers spoke to media outside the plant, criticising the government's inability to come to a working Brexit agreement
Honda has been keen to emphasise, however, the closure is strictly related to the challenges facing the global car manufacturing business and that it is seeking to consolidate production in its home country of Japan
In fact, the Honda statement blamed changing conditions in the global market and reinforced a desire to prepare its manufacturing network for the future
Honda also announced it will close a production facility in Turkey, which employs more than 1000 workers and produces almost 40,000 vehicles every year
The Honda plant closure in Swindon is a hammer blow for manufacturing in England and comes not long after Nissan announced it would cease X-Trail production out of Sunderland
