So the main issue is transportation
and the only way of transportation are the waterways.
So that's the primary challenge that we face,
in catering any sort of services in Sundarbans.
This is the Sundarbans delta,
home to the world's largest mangrove forest and 4.5 million people.
In this remote area, 20 Volvo machines are working non-stop,
building embankments to save this invaluable land.
Rising sea levels and reocurring cyclones
have made living conditions in the Sundarbans extremely harsh.
In 2009, Cyclone Aila swept away the embankments
protecting against the saltwater.
Today, new embankments, are being built in a pioneer construction project.
This project has always been very interesting to Volvo
as well as our dealers
because it's one of the prestigious projects.
It's a government project which is actually helping
improve the livelihood of people.
Construction work in the Sundarbans means facing some extreme challenges,
as one third of the land disappears and reappears with the tide every day.
Suchita Group is the Volvo dealer in West Bengal.
They brought the Volvo excavators on vessels via the waterways,
when the project started.
Operators and spare parts need to come the same way.
Basically, this area is quite far away from the urban region.
So that's the reason why arrangements of connecting us to the city isn't good.
That's the reason we face a lot of problems.
We have to choose the river route as the only available option.
It is time-consuming to come to work here,
but we don't mind that since it is about upgrading the Sundarbans.
And wherever our Volvo machines are used in West Bengal,
we try to offer our services everywhere from the Suchita Group.
By the end of 2018, 5,000 meters of new embankments were constructed.
The new walls will not only protect the land from flooding,
making it possible to farm the land, but they will also serve as roads.
People here will benefit in many ways.
Cyclone Aila left quite an impact,
but once these embankments are built then people won't live in fear anymore.
They'll be able to live in a better and more carefree way.
With improved protection against the rising sea levels,
the Sundarbans has the potential to become a granary
in this highly populated part of the world.
When we hear that Volvo machines are working here
to improve the lives of people, we are excited and proud of it.

Volvo CE – The Megaproject Listing #6 – Saving invaluable land, Sundarbans, India - Duration: 4:50.
Our fate depends on the use of land.
Along the Bay of Bengal,
endangered species and 4.5 million of people
are living under the constant threat
of rising sea levels and recurring cyclones.
This is the story of how pioneering construction
aims to protect the Sundarbans delta, a unique world heritage site.
The Sundarbans in between India and Bangladesh
is home to the world's largest mangrove forest,
millions of people and the endangered Bengali tiger.
In 2009, hundreds and thousands of families lost their homes
when a natural disaster cyclone Aila hit the area.
Fertile soil was destroyed and cattle drowned
when the land was flooded with saltwater.
The tropical storm also brought down the mud walls
protecting the islands and its habitants from the elements.
When Cyclone Aila hit us,
all the grain fields here were destroyed, the fish in the ponds were killed,
most of the cattle drowned
and all of the vegetation was destroyed due to the salty water from the flood.
We didn't have anywhere to live.
After the catastrophe the building of the embankments began.
It is near completion.
Situated two meters above sea level,
Sundarbans is extremely exposed to flooding.
The tides are so dramatic
that about a third of the land disappears and reappears every single day.
Without the embankments, life here would not be possible.
After the cyclone in 2009,
people tried to rebuild the walls by hand, an almost impossible task.
So if I make humans do the same work as the machines...
If we worked here with the machines for nearly a year,
then it would take five years at least for humans to do the same work.
A minimum of five years. It might take even longer.
Today, new, machine-built embankments are under construction in a pioneer project
designed to save this invaluable land.
The new walls are made of concrete blocks
and will be 5 meters tall and up to 40 meters wide at the base.
They will also serve as roads, a welcome addition to this isolated area.
20 Volvo machines are working on the project
and by the end of 2018 5,000 meters of embankments have already been constructed.
I don't feel like I'm operating a machine And I like the site where I work.
The villagers appreciate us as well, since we have stopped the river from flooding.
With the new embankments there is no way that it would flood again.
So that makes me feel great.
With this project, the government of West Bengal hopes to save this area
from rising sea levels and future cyclones.
With better infrastructure, and embankments protecting the fertile soil,
the Sundarbans has potential to become an important granary
in one of the world's most populated areas.
People here will benefit in many ways.
Cyclone Aila left quite an impact,
but once these embankments are built then people won't live in fear anymore.
They'll be able to live in a better and more carefree way.
All around the globe, similar construction measures are being taken
to prepare our world for changing living conditions.
The embankments in Sundarbans are only one example
of how engineering and construction equipment are being used
to face future challenges.
Our future will be better once the embankments have been built.
Our crops will grow again.

Volvo Trucks - First electric Volvo trucks delivered to customers - Duration: 1:52.
Thank you for coming here
and sharing this very historic moment with Volvo Trucks,
delivering on our very first electrical trucks to customers.
City transport is the first phase in our electric mobility programme.
The benefits from cleaner and more silent city transport
will increase the quality of life.
Lower emissions, silent transport and strong powertrain
is a unique combination for our electrical trucks.
I think the journey has been very good.
We have been working to get the Volvo trucks,
our engineering, our manufacturing staff and our purchasing,
together with customers,
and then we have developed this project together,
mapped out where the distribution routes will be for our customers,
brought that into the engineering and then come up with this project.
We now have the final stage
of delivering this project to our customers.
Very good teamwork together with our customers, I would say.
It's really exciting to drive a new Volvo electric truck.
It's really smooth and quiet.
What I think is best about the new Volvo electric truck,
from a global perspective, I think it's the environment,
to reduce CO2 and create a better future for everyone.

Volvo CE – The Megaproject Listing #6 – Meet the operator, Sundarbans, India - Duration: 3:00.
My name is Sameer Manna I operate a Volvo Excavator
I use that machine to every task related to the soil
I move lose soil and construct embankments.
I do all sorts of work regarding to the soil.
When Cyclone Aila hit us, all the grain fields here were destroyed,
the fishes in the ponds were killed,
most of the cattle drowned and all of the vegetation was
destroyed due to the salty water from the flood.
We didn't have anywhere to live, so we stayed in the school.
No food could be cooked there so the government had to provide food to us that's what we ate to survive.
After the catastrophe the building of the embankments began. It is near completion.
I don't feel like I'm operating a machine
and I like the site where I work
The villagers are appreciating us too, since we have stopped the river from flooding
With the new embankments there is no way that it would flood again
So I feel great in that perspective too.
When we are not working we go somewhere for a picnic
I take a boat ride to some place on the river
I visit the market too
I have a lot of fun with my friends It feels great
One interesting thing about the Sundarbans is the tiger
But we walk in the jungle anyway
Often the villagers here
The ones who catch fish in the river are taken by crocodiles.
Many times people encounter tigers while hunting for crabs.
So we are surviving here with great difficulty.
And we have kept the villagers alive by building the embankments
We do face a lot of difficulties But the work still needs to be done
That's how we're living our lives and working here Amongst all difficulties
We read in the books that Sundarbans is a great place
We never imagined that we'd come here to work with the Volvo machines
We've been working here ever since we came with the machines
And the villagers are applauding our work, of which we feel proud too.
