How Reliable Are New BMWs? - Duration: 16:23.welcome back everybody its mark with exotic car play place coming back at you
today to discuss reliability of new BMWs in general now if you see behind me here
I have my e70 x5 there's also a new x5 right beside it and I've been getting
lots of calls from the dealer lately to come trade it in but the question is are
the new cars as reliable as the older cars that's what I want to know first
before I really get into a new car purchase so let's talk about some of the
models that can be a problem and where some of the issues actually lie and
whether that would be a good purchase to buy a brand new BMW let's go so since
we're on the discussion about x5 s because I drove my x5 today this is the
e 70 well over here we have the new one well I shouldn't say new new this is
more or less the latest now you know there's a newer version that's just
being released right now a brand new x5 there's lots of great rebates lots of
great great deals on these x5 s this generation which is the one just before
the latest which of course we're in 2018 so this is sort of on the outgoing but
it's a fresh fresh style compared to the e 70 I've had these 70 for a while and
if you've watched some of my channel content you've know I've had issues I've
had issues at the back with the airbags I've had issues weird window cracks and
I've had problems with the intake systems and broken vacuum lines and all
kinds other codes and things that have gone on this car glow plugs as well
because it's a diesel has also gone what about the new ones now first I got to
mention a friend of mine actually has one of these he has I believe a 2015
more or less the same body style and he loves it but his is a 35 just like this
one which is a gas job' it's the turbo gas with the illustrious n55 motor in
it and he loves it it's got lots of power it's it's easy to throw a chip in
it upgrade get you know a quick 400 horse out of it it's a great machine it
looks sharp and he loves everything about it with the exception of an
ongoing nagging issue that he's had which really
is an issue with stalling and rough idles and hunting and surging so he has
that intake related or fuel related issues with his x5 that the dealer has
been struggling with rectifying I don't know where he's had it serviced so this
isn't about you know the dealer or whatever specifically the point is
there's a glitch in that car that has been a problem for him outside of that I
know he loves the car it's it's great I know this body style is a little sharper
you'll notice it's a little bit lower or it certainly has a lower profile seems
to anyway when you look at that versus the e70 it seems a little sporty err in
my mind it's a little sharper whereas the e70 seems a little more truck like
now it's sort of depends on your flavor but it's a beautiful beautiful design so
are they without their faults no not necessarily
but I would say word has it aside from a few of these oddities the the overall
rating of quality on these cars and reliability is a lot better than even
from the generations a few generations ago such as like the e 70 or even before
these ones here are actually quite good and there's not a lot of issues more the
problems really evolved around the electrics on it and because there's a
lot more going on here in terms of safety features and electrical options
and so the next car we talk about are anything with the b-58 engine like you
have here in the this happens to be a 340 of course which is the next hottest
car to the M series you know the m3 or the m4 you can get the 340 the beauty
would do in a 340 or a 440 like you have here with the b-58 engine is that now
you can couple it to all-wheel drive so you can have your all-wheel drive system in
these cars and then actually enjoy you know kind of the the poor driving road
conditions you can actually enjoy that anta have a car that's quite sporty to
drive so this is a really cool machine but this this is a new version this new
340 use it utilizes that engine which is the b-58 that is more or less replacing
the n55 from the old 335 car of course so it's a new revised engine there's a
lot of new features that off you know optimize its
performance there's more focus on cooling engine cooling oil cooling on
this car than you ever had before because now it's pressing higher boost
for more power this car is producing closer to 335 horsepower so it's a great
machine but it hasn't totally been without its faults and this and this
engine really has been in the three forty four forty five forty it's used in
a lot of the cars even some of the X cars now of course we've got the coupes
over here like a 440 right here now did you know the engine out of this is
actually more or less the same slightly detuned engine that you get in the new
j29 Toyota Supra yeah that new hot super that's powered by a BMW drivetrain
that's the engine that powers the Supra in 2019 so that's the hottest thing and
obviously they're sharing the same engine that you're finding in the 440 or
340 series cars just a slightly tuned up version of it now that's pretty
impressive when you think okay I'll just draw my family sedan you know the 340 or
440 and you have the same hot engine that you get any other car so that's one
thing one downside that I've heard from some people comment that these fenders
in the front get really hot after a hard drive because the turbos expand out a
lot of heat produce a lot of heat and even to touching defenders here after a
hard drive creates a very uncomfortable sensation makes people believe that
there's something wrong so that's been something that's been known as well and
of course again it's it's a highly tuned engine straight 6-3 liters in
displacement but high boost in this car so it has its share of heat production
now another thing that's been commented about these forty series cars is after
driving it for a few kilometers maybe a thousand five thousand kilometers a lot
of customers are finding the coolant is low while a lot of the cases it's not
leaking a lot of people are alarmed that it's either burning or leaking
antifreeze in most cases that's not the situation what's actually happening with
that the tank setup here for the coolant is such in a way that it takes a while
to purge through the thermostat two heating cycles to actually get all the
air out of the engine and so what ends up happening eventually after a few
heating cycles of course after the cars hand it over
the customer the air works its way out settles out and of course the antifreeze
winds up a little low and requires a top-up nothing to be generally alarmed
about it's not that big of a deal it just means that you take your dog back
to the dealer they top it back up and you're good to go
generally not an issue but that's been something that's been noted another
thing oil filters so when the engine of these of course obviously every great
engine needs great oil and obviously to keep that oil in great shape you want to
change the filter change the oil frequently well the problem with this is
based on BMWs recommended service intervals it's way too much and there's
been a lot of people have discovered the filters are collapsing and in some case
almost dissolving because the kilometers on a service is far far too long why do
they do that primarily to sell cars and that's a very unfortunate set of
circumstances I would say as a rule it doesn't matter if you're using synthetic
or you're using the latest and the greatest the oil is part of this whole
process the filter is very important as well obviously these filters are there's
been a lot of findings where the filters have actually collapsed or failing or
plug almost plug right off completely so you want to make sure irregardless or
regardless of what the expectation is on the BMW service interval I would always
recommend changing your oil far far sooner than that maybe eight to ten
thousand you know something like that would be more reasonable even if it's
out of your own pocket I think it's in my in my best interest to protect my
investment and I would do that personally even if I had to cover the
costs maybe BMW doesn't want to do it as part
of their standard service package I would do it anyway one other thing to
note of course with the forty series or basically the b38 engine powered cars is
they had a recall actually and you should be aware of that it's for the
crankshaft sensor firmware basically causes these cars the crankshaft sensor
causes these cars to fail or basically stall or not start at all completely so
that was a pretty simple fix it was a recall and it is a recall and that's
just more or less to solve that little issue for
another series of issues that were not necessarily really really common but
there was a lot of reports on cars not on the two 30s or one 30s it was on the
28 series or the 20s so like it would be a 120 or 220 or 228 cars and often a lot
of the cars that were you know usually a smaller variety so it would be like even
an x1 2.0 X or any of those cars you know were just a twenty series you know
obviously you have here the 230 it would be like a 220 or 228 and so back in
about 2012 to 2015 there was a lawsuit that was initiated against BMW because
they allegedly I'll use the word allegedly knew about a fault with the
timing chain and oil pump issues and they did not rectify the situation in
time leading to catastrophic failures in some engines now wasn't a huge vast
widespread problem but there was enough cases to warrant this class-action
lawsuit this is something that's gone on in Canada and obviously it's something
that unfortunately you know as a result of you know a you know a bit of a design
flaw and since then in 20 2015 the later revision BMW more or less took care of
that sorted it out otherwise the N 20 engine which is the turbocharged
4-cylinder with the twin-scroll turbo on it is otherwise a quite quite a reliable
engine there's been other little things like when guys start modifying it you
had the boost piping has been known to crack you've had issues like that or
some other small issues there's been you've had some mixing issues in some
cases with there's sort of the the oil filter housing where you've got the
antifreeze going through it sometimes there's been failures in there they
split and you have oil and antifreeze mixing you've had other issues as well
with the n20 when you boost it too hard and some guys again get carried away
with the turbo charging and they'll take it to a tuner and what ends up happening
is they tune it way too hard and there's been several cases of split heads so the
engines actually split and of course that's more or less
strophic failure so that's been a result of some hard tuning so the engines are
quite bulletproof in stock form particularly if you get something after
2015 however don't boost it too hard mild tuning is okay but the engine will
designed to run optimally at stock configuration they say anytime you start
pushing that engine too hard it quickly shows its weaknesses and you wind up
with scenarios of oil and antifreeze mixing your split heads great engines in
stock but they quickly fail when you start putting too much boost to now
generally I would say as a rule if you're looking for reliability so far
they've got really good ratings the five series cars they actually have a pretty
good rating in there they're showing to be quite reliable overall customer
satisfaction seems to be quite high on the 5 series cars I'd say they're vastly
improved from the old obviously e60 generation the bangl era you know
they've come a long ways in terms of reliability and you know the F tens were
improved and now these are even getting better yet so I think you can do fairly
well by buying a modern five series car they're quite a bit more reliable the
drive trains are quite robust again this one has the 540 so that's that same b38
it's a great engine you can also get the m5 and some other great options you can
get in the new 5 Series the G 30 this is the G 30 it's a great new new setup now
of course there's the 3-series like we have over here also another great option
so you've got the 5 Series the 3 Series they're both to showing to be quite
robust and overall general reliability ratings are very very good so if you're
looking for reliable BMW so far so far they're showing to be quite good and the
40 series are good the 330 again it's a little bit of a simpler setup it's a
turbocharged four-cylinder engine so a little more economical of course but if
you want the hot car that's not an M machine and you want to be able to
all-wheel drive you go with something like a 340 or a 440 that's got all-wheel
drive and makes the car go really really fast of course it's also slightly
tunable so there's some great options that are quite robust they're very
reliable five series three series they're the g20 which is coming out this
one here is sore is not the g20 this is the previous gen
the g20 is going to be replacing this and you've seen my previous video you'll
know that the g20 actually has quite distinctive taillights and the rear
bumper is quite a bit different it's it's an entirely new design for the BMW
lineup for them it's three series cars and so can't wait till we see those on
the road but basically the 3-series show to be quite robust the five series are
very reliable the X series so far not too bad but again if you watch my last
video where we did a walk through the service department of one of the
dealerships here we recognized a lot a lot of X fives and that to me tells a
story speaking of X 5s what do we have here
guys this is the brand brand new x5 look at this new design look at the
taillights on this beautiful inline with the 5 Series and the 3 Series cars look
at the taillights this new 5 Series looks spectacular
I love it now it's definitely more upright I would say again slightly less
sporty than the outgoing model but look at the finishing touches around the
exhaust pretty slick and then the side now these mirrors look a little small to
me initial kind of perspective on that they look a little small for this
application but I guess time will tell very stout front end on it I gotta say I
like it guys and if reliability is the game in recent years with BMW then
hopefully this is another one that gets better with you know as generations
continue on this is such a beautiful rig actually quite a bit different than the
last one wheels are very similar but look at the
front end the front finishing is quite different now you have this BMW laser
the grille is very very very nice-looking for sure that's a nice
finish on there this is the X Drive 50 so we'll get some more specs on this for
you as time goes on guys but anyway there it is fresh off the truck
as a matter of fact it's still got the foam on the doors here they haven't even
taken any of this off yet it's not even fully PDI door received yet the interior
still plastic on the seats so guys I really hope you enjoyed the video and
