Auto news on Youtube Sep 28 2017

Hey! Today I'm going to show you Carista which is a nice little interface for

your car to customize some features. It comes with an app for iOS and Android

and if you buy this device from Amazon (links in the description) you get

a 30-day free trial for the full functionality that comes with the Carista

application. And you don't have to use this interface with the Carista App because

you can use generic elm327 Wi-Fi interface if you are not afraid to

use some cheap chinese interface in your car. This device is so elegant that I had

to change my background music to fit better the mood. As you can see it's

very small and light. Compact and clean design. And you want to use it for

diagnostic and coding in your car. This device supports BMW cars, Volkswagen

Group's (so you got VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda) and Toyota, Lexus I believe and few

others. And using this and software that comes with it is very simple. If you ever

wanted to change coding in your car, activate some features or

adjust some advanced settings you had to use diagnostic interface. For BMW you

had to use INPA for diagnostic or NCS-Expert for coding in your car but

those programs are very very hard to use. For VW group cars you

can use the VCDS which is a third-party application. It's not a

dealer level software, capabilities of VCDS are limited but it's wide enough

for standard use. Carista application and interface does not give you the full

options for coding or adaptation in your car but gives you some functions

that you can enable or disable or adjust in your car and give you access only to

those features. And the application is so easy to use that if you ever changed your

ringtone or a wallpaper in your phone this is as easy as that. Okay, so let's

say I want to change something in my BMW E87. I have the Carista interface plugged

in to the obd2 port. I have the Carista application on my phone and Bluetooth

enabled. So let's go to the Carista app and over here I can go to diagnose,

customize or perform service inspection reset. Make sure that your ignition is on

and let's go to customize. Right now Carista is connecting to my car,

talking with all the modules that are installed over here, checking what

features are available, which are enabled, which are disabled, what can be adjusted

and in a few seconds I get a full list of things that I can change, modify, turn

on or turn off in my car. Let's give it few more seconds and let's check what

can I do over here. OK, so let's go to those windows and

remote. Over here I have all the functions that corresponding to the

central locking features in this car. I can adjust if all doors should close or

open with a single press; how long I should press the lock button on the

remote to close the windows and fold my side mirrors... And as I said this

application is as easy to use as changing your wallpaper

in your phone. So let's say I want to make the delay (how long I need to press

the lock button on the remote to fold my mirrors) to one second.

So let's swipe over here, press "safe", wait a few seconds and done. That's it. We have

for example that "double impulse hazard lights". Right now I have a standard

single impulse. So let's check how it will work after we change it

to the double impulse. Let's say that's enabled, let's save it, wait a few

seconds and that's it.

If one day you will have a fault message on your instrument cluster you can just

go to "diagnose" and once again Carista is connecting to your car,

talking with all the modules and in a few seconds we will have a full list of

the faults that are stored in the car. While we are waiting for the diagnose

to complete I can show you some activations I made in few cars. I've

tested this device in Audi A5, Q5, A6, S6, Q7,

Skoda Yeti, in BMW 1-Series and X1, the E84 model, in Volkswagen Touareg and

Volkswagen Caddy and I've done some activations like lap timers, hidden menu

in the MMI system, I activated the Audi Drive Select system, in BMWs I activated

the folding mirrors and the digital speedometer in the instrument cluster,

it's also possible to enable fog lights as cornering lights and adjust the

daytime running lights LEDs brightness. And the full list of the device

capabilities is in the link, in the description below this video. So

check it out. ...98, 99, 100. OK, I have 12 faults

detected in my car. Three of those are in engine module, which is: DPF warning,

glow plug warning on cylinder 2 and I have a back pressure sensor on bank 1

fault. Traction control: brake pads wear sensors - that's true

because I did replace my brake pads but didn't replace the sensor.

Instrument cluster: power supply switched off. Yes, that's true because I played

around with the fuse box. And the center roof control has faults for

all the bulbs that I change to LEDs. I also have a left fog light fault which

is true because I wanted to check if an LED

H8 bulb we'll fit in my car. And I have a junction box fault which is related to

the water pump under the hood which is true because I disconnected this in this

water pump when I played around with the water hoses. OK so over here you can

save those logs and if some error is not described you can just

click on it and it will take you to Google with BMW code and the code number

and you can check on message boards what is this code related to. Let's go back to

the app and at the bottom of the screen you also have a "reset all" button

which we want to use right now to reset all faults in this car which is not

possible with the standard obd2 tools.

OK, that's it. If you are interested in this software and this interface please

check the description below. You can find this on App Store on your Google

Play Store and the device is available on Amazon.

Thank you for watching, check my other tutorials and reviews and see you soon.

BMW G 310 GS | Everyday Adventures: Episode #2 Do something you've never done before - Duration: 1:25.

You've just got this one life. But it's a journey I'm in.

Everyone is just trying… trying to get through it. Make sure it's not boring and it's not wasted as well.

There is a certain sensation about riding motorcycles that I find synergies with a lot of other things that I do.

I'm away every weekend in a different part in South Africa – meeting new people, like experiencing new places and new sounds.

It's almost as though when I'm on a bike or even on a surfboard, like I see the lines in front of me.

And one thing links into the next.

It's just me and whatever is around me.

That sensation is… it's awesome.

And I love that journey and that is part of my life, you know.

You get to do what you love and you get to be what you're want to be.

BMW M3 E46 (2000-2006) buying advice - Duration: 14:23.

It's your childhood hero, depending on how old you are.

Any M3 is a fun car with appeal, wether you're a BMW fan or not.

The E46 M3 is affordable second-hand and an okay number is for sale now.

So, what's the catch? We'll tell you what to watch out for later.

First, a bit of M3 history.

It's wider compared to a 3 Series coupe. The track is wider too.

It has flared wheel arches and a different front bumper and hood.

The power dome was necessary to make room for the S54 engine.

Four exhaust tips; can't be missed.

It has a different rear bumper... I have to use some brain power.

It's a cool 3 Series. You immediately see it's an M3.

This is an M3 CSL, a real collector's item. The prices for these cars rose quickly.

The prices are more stable now, but you never know how this will develop.

Looking at the specs on paper, a CSL may not be that interesting.

A normal M3 E46 gets 338 hp from a naturally aspirated 3.2 engine.

That's a lot of hp per liter.

That's why this engine became International Engine of the Year five times and the best newcomer.

Everyone was excited about this engine, but the CSL has only 17 hp extra on paper.

355 hp in total.

They did this with different camshafts, a lighter exhaust, and the famed carbon air box.

It's not about the extra hp, but about this.

Listen to it.

It's really pretty. It's a really cool sound.

The sound is brilliant, inside and out, especially at high rpm.

You hear fuel being converted in forward motion.

An E46 M3 can keep up with current traffic.

It's not like we were only impressed back in the days. It's still a fast car that demands respect.

ENGINES gasoline

A number of things. Sales numbers. The coupe was the bestseller with 54,000 cars.

It was also available as a convertible, of which less than 30,000 cars were sold.

This CSL is one of 1,383, of which 29 are pre-production cars according to the annals.

How many are left is a mystery, just like how many fakes are out there.

You can change an M3 to CSL specs.

That doesn't matter. The M3 CS didn't have the light-weight things, but it did have other goodies.

For example, different ESP software, wheels, etc.

That's a desirable version too. It's the Competition Package, but more often it's called the M3 CS.

600 of those were made, making it the rarer car.

About 20 E46 M3s are for sale on Marktplaats.

You get to choose coupe or convertible in different colors, but there's another choice.

A manual transmission or the SMG2 transmission?

The manual transmission is nicer. The SMG2 transmission is standard for the CSL.

It's an option to remove the clutch pedal. It's a robotized manual transmission.

You heard us complain about this before. The transmission shifts gears slowly.

You have a pause. I'll show you.

Create some distance so I can accelerate.

I accelerate and shift gears. It does this to your head. It slows down and accelerates again.

Every robotized single-clutch transmission does this, but it's standard for the CSL.

The most desirable version always has an SMG transmission.

There aren't as many cars for sale now. It feels like it used to be more.

About 20 cars can be found on Marktplaats.

The cars are getting older, so some have disappeared, but there are basement collections too.

It's still an iconic car, especially a low-mileage CSL.

You can find an E46 M3 for less than 20,000 euros.

It'll have a high mileage. This doesn't say anything about its condition, but it won't be mint.

If you want a mint car, you'll have to pay double.

If you want an M3 CSL, double the price again.

They're rare and wanted.

Manual vs SMG transmission is about 50-50. 2/3 is a coupe and 1/3 is a convertible.

A convertible is less hardcore, but it's nice to have it as a second car for open-top cruising.

PRICES minimum, maximum

There are a number of things to watch out for with the body. First, damage and repaired damage.

These cars are more potent and became available for young men with less budget and driving skills.

Look for it. Damage doesn't have to be a problem, but you don't want it as a collector.

The convertible top... Casper made a nice video about convertibles.

If you're buying a convertible, watch that video. It needs to close properly without having to push it.

This would indicate the car has been damaged.

The E46 M3 rusts less than a 3 Series.

There are two places to check: the rear wheel arches and around the rear window.

Those are the first places where rust can happen.

Because of its age there can be something wrong with the rubber parts in the suspension.

Specific things to watch out for: brakes and tires.

Why? They're expensive for cars like these.

The standard brakes aren't great, so replace them with aftermarket solutions.

Especially if you want to take it to the track, the standard brakes aren't sufficient.

The tires are more expensive too because of their size and the car's potential.

If a previous owner skimped on costs, I think that's a bad sign.

The previous owner may have skimped on maintenance costs too.

You don't want this with an M3.

Neither with any other car, but you don't want this especially with sporty cars.

The M3's heart is the engine up front.

Check the documents. It should've had its first oil change at 2,000 km (1,200 miles).

It really should have gotten this. Check the documents for maintenance; where and what.

It's crucial with these cars.

The engine is relatively reliable, but there are a number of things to consider.

Annoyingly, you can't always see it from the outside.

For example, the bearing shells of the connecting rod.

Nice word for Scrabble. These can wear.

If you notice this because it makes sounds, you're too late. Extra damage happened.

There are discussions on Internet as to when you have to take care of this.

There has been a recall for the connecting rod bearing shells, plus the oil pump.

This was for cars built before April 2003. April cars are fine.

These cars will potentially have a new oil pump and bearing shells installed under warranty.

The bearing shells need changing every 100,000 km (62,000 miles), depending on how the car is used.

If mom only took it to market... Or if you redline it like I do, they can wear faster.

You can't see it from the outside.

Problems with the Vanos variable camshaft adjustment are easier to spot.

The camshaft adjusts itself for more torque at low rpm and more hp at high rpm.

An M3 engine should go through its paces without strange dips.

If it doesn't and has an irregular idle, stalls, and burns more fuel...

That's annoying because you don't have a reference.

These things indicate that the Vanos may malfunction.

This can be caused by a number of things. The magnet valves don't open or close properly.

You'll feel this when putting it through its paces. It works on oil pressure, so the seals can dry out.

The standard seals BMS used weren't great, so these things can happen.

If it doesn't run as it should, check the Vanos.

The SMG transmission won't be smooth, but it should shift gears properly.

This transmission has its pauses. There are a number of different shift modes. Try them all.

It'll shift faster and more aggressive. It's important to know the state of the transmission.

There aren't many electronics to check in this CSL.

Radio and A/C weren't standard, but most customers ordered these things.

It's no fun driving without A/C and a radio.

The displays of the radio and satnav can have dead pixels.

The central locking module can die too.

The gear shifter of the manual transmission has a light. It should work.

It's no disaster if it doesn't work, but it'll be fun if it does.

The self-dimming rearview mirror contains a fluid that can sink.

You'll see a line. This one is fine.

The fluid sinks and it's expensive to replace. These are expensive units.

This M3 CSL has less than 100,000 km (62,000 miles) on the clock.

Don't drive too much or it'll go over it. We found it at Wensink in Heerenveen.

Driving this car was on my bucket list. Driving an M3 CSL is really cool.

I'm not a fan of the SMG transmission, but the sound...

This version is great with the carbon details and the light sport seats without the heavy power unit.

It's a cool car.
