Make Me Smart with Kai and Molly: Behind the Music - Duration: 1:35.

My name is Daniel Ramirez,

and I am an audio engineer at Marketplace.

My name is Ben Tolliday,

and I'm also an audio engineer here at Marketplace.

And together, we wrote the theme music for Make Me Smart.

I think of the theme music as

kind of an acoustic guitar groove

that introduces a conversation between Kai and Molly.

I had always pictured that first riff

which starts at the beginning might depict

the swagger Kai has when he walks into the studio

for a broadcast or for a recording session.

I specifically remember Molly coming to us and saying,

"For the close, I want to feel like I have the top down in my car

and the wind's blowing, there's a sense of freedom."

We tag-teamed between engineering and playing

and set up a little recording rig

and brought in a bunch of instruments.

We made Studio A our little kind of

"writing/recording" workspace.

We were fully prepared to label them

"Open Theme" and "Close Theme,"

and then when the producers came back and said,

"Don't you dare call them 'Open theme' and 'Close Theme.'"

We looked at each other and were like,

"All right, we're not good at this,

let's figure out what to name them."

So the open theme is called "The Informant,"

and then the close theme is called "Spiritum Liberum,"

which is "free spirit" in Latin,

in case that didn't make sense to you.

Smart Mind - English - USING THE PAST CONTINUOUS - Duration: 5:09.

Today were going to learn about:

Using the Past Continuous (or past progressive tense)

On the left side you have the menu that will guide you.

Using the Past Continuous (or past progressive tense)

1: An action in the past which overlaps another action or a time.

The action in the past continuous starts before and often continues after the other shorter

action or time.

· I was walking to the station when I met John.

(I started walking before I met John, and maybe I continued afterwards.)

· At three o'clock, I was working.

(I started before three o'clock and finished after three o'clock.)

2: In the same way, we can use the past continuous for the background of a story.

(We often use the past simple for the actions.)

This is really a specific example of Use 1.

· The birds were singing, the sun was shining and in the coffee shop people were laughing

and chatting.

Amy sat down and took out her phone.

3: Temporary habits or habits that happen more often than we expect in the past.

We often use 'always', 'constantly' or 'forever' here.

This is the same as the way we use the present continuous for habits, but the habit started

and finished in the past.

This thing doesn't happen now.

· He was always leaving the tap running.

· She was constantly singing.

4: To emphasize that something lasted for a while.

This use is often optional and we usually use it with time expressions like 'all day'

or 'all evening' or 'for hours'.

· I was working in the garden all day.

· He was reading all evening.

Remember you can't use this tense or any continuous tense with stative verbs.

Which forms are the correct ones ? A-PAST CONTINUOUS

B-OTHER MODES C-STATIVE VERB

1 – I will be an immigrant, next year ! 2 – We will be going to the office, this

afternoon.

3 – He was always studying in my house.

4 –Were they in Canada, last year ?

The answers are:

1 – I will be an immigrant, next year ! B-OTHER MODES

2 – We will be going to the office, this afternoon.

B-OTHER MODES 3 – He was always studying in my house.

A-PAST CONTINUOUS 4 –Were they in Canada, last year ?

You don't have to be smart to invest in real estate | Flipping Houses | In The Life 113 - Duration: 9:48.

- Nick, how do I invest in real estate

with no money and credit?

It doesn't make financial sense to

gut this and rebuild a rec room, period.

I'm gonna paint this wood all white,

slap some basic carpeting and it's still a bonus area.

(upbeat music)

(relaxing music)

Super old school basement.

Here's just a raw basement, basement, furnace, et cetera.

But this is just an old school rec room,

which we are going to,

now, it doesn't make financial sense to

gut this and rebuild a rec room, period.

I'm gonna paint this wood all white,

slap some basic carpeting

and it's still a bonus area.

The comps, I don't need to do this basement, okay.

I don't need to, but as long as it's here, boom.

Come on,

see that, what you want?

You want some of this?

Hold on.

The ball's flat, see that?

Hold on, hold on, come on.

What, who are you talking to, bro?

Come on, throw on some Harlem Globetrotter music.

I know you got it, those whistles.

You know what, if the ceiling was higher,

I'm able to throw this ball up

and catch it back on my finger.

I BS you not, hang on.

(laughing)

You know I wanna prove that I can

shoot it up and catch it.

You got that?

- [Videographer] I got it, nice.

- Right there. (laughing)

So, look at this old school tennis racket.

You know you find some gems in these joints.

So, anyway, paint it, carpet it, it's a bonus area.

It's not square footage, it's not top notch square footage,

but it's a hey, come down here

and you can screw around with this.

There's even a half bath over there.

So, let's turn these lights off.

I gotta get out of here.

Let's go upstairs.

So, that's that.

On to the next, okay.

(relaxing music)

Alright well listen, Larry, pleasure meeting you, okay.

You'll see some new stuff all beautiful things, okay.

Alright, you wanna show me some things?

- We can keep it like this

it be cheapest way is to cover it with mulch.

- Cover that too.

Yeah but you don't think it's

gonna be a problem down the road do you?

It' gonna be a problem.

- Yeah. Maybe it be a problem

- Yeah even those stump too that's my point to right

- The stumps not so much a problem

probably they gonna ask to remove it.

We can demo that it's up to you.

- Do you just wanna demo the concrete

and then put the mulch and that way there's no problem.

And I know it's cost more.

So demo the concrete, what about grinding the stump?

- We going to chop up the tree.

- Okay get rid of the concrete

I think that's the right way to go.

And you know what we're gonna mulch it,

they're never gonna know there

was a walkway here to begin with right?

There never gonna know - No.

But if you want we just can put random

a few of those steps and make it look like

on top with mulch. - Maybe that way.

That might not be a dad idea.

Whatever you think man,

but maybe you should demo this

and then it will be easier for my guys.

What do you think, should we get rid of those pavers?

- Sometimes what they want if they going to build a deck

they want to leave something in the bottom

where all the weeds go - okay

- We going to, - Maybe I'll leave it then

- Ask them who's going to take care of this

- Eugene. I'll wait let him look at it first.

- Ask Eugene and you let me know

if I suppose to do something tomorrow or Friday

- And then just again please make sure

the down spouts are all extended out

so the water doesn't come in.

- Add two new window wells over there.

- Thank you, okay beautiful.

- And we put the fiber just in case

this project turn till spring

you don't see weeds or nothing like that.

- Alright so this is good

Burleigh, Beatree after Beatree you're gone?

- Beatree we just gotta go to

pick up some removal some branches

- And you're done.

- It's completely, we can take the pictures.

- Burleigh?

- Burleigh I went this morning to

pick up the trees and we gonna start working there

as soon as you tell me what else gonna do.

There is - Just the bare minimum.

- I don't know if you want to get rid of those

- Just make it look ggod - I'll show you.

- Can you just clean them up maybe, I don't know.

'Cause it's a nice privacy thing, I like that.

- You was asking me to - okay, I like the privacy

- And it's more better if you have the fence there

- I agree. Thank you Edgar

Alright Fabian we'll see you man.

See you later.

(relaxing music)

They want to see everything

even the stuff that's ,you know, whatever.

So I'm on IG, I'm gonna go live right now.

Shoot there and then they need

to know on In the Life

sometimes I go live on Instagram.

It's my main platform

and then check the comments to on

your phone with IG case I need to answer stuff

'cause you know I'm driving man.

Instagram come on in.

Come on in it's been a while from live just left a project

a new one that I haven't started yet

but if you're in here say hi, drop a comment.

Just leaving a project that I bought last week.

Just closed on a new one today.

Got a lot of rehab projects in the works,

having fun with me dawg.

Teaching moments, we had a nice,

long teaching moment on this,

I mean you're learning across the board.

On the show In the Life, obviously,

but I had a very

strong teaching moment in here.

I'll leave that mystery to you but

we sat down about five to seven minutes

in the middle of the episode and

I really taught something heavy.

Not that I don't teach every time,

I do but was very specific let's put it that way.

I didn't eat lunch today can you believe that.

Starving. Have these honey roasted peanuts.

I love you guys in Instagram,

by the way thank you guys for

just paying attention to the content.

Really a lot of positive comments.

People are happy, they're learning,

they're doing deals that's it.

That's my goal,

I need you to do more deals.

I have a new masterclass.

You should be able to click the

link in my bio by the way

and get a free training that teaches you

how to find, finance and flip homes

make yourself 30, 40, 50 grand

without using any money or credit.

People say but is that really possible Nick?

A 100 percent.

I bet everything on that.

It's happening it's just you have to do the work.

You have to pursue the opportunity I tell you.

Most people get information and do nothing.

I can't help that, I can't train work ethic into you.

But it works a lot of my deals

I never have to use money or credit.

Almost all the flips I bring in outside money

and it has nothing to do with my credit

and if you've learned from my teachings

you know that that's the case,

they don't look at your credit score,

it's this is an asset based lender.

The moneys all around you you're just not looking.

Your mind is just trained to be broke.

If you read my book Success from Scratch

you'll know success and opportunity

is a language and most people don't speak it.

Which means when success and opportunity

are spoken around theme and

all these opportunities are there

since they're not fluent in the language

they don't understand it and they stay broke.

Trying to get you fluent in the language

of success and opportunity and finance.

And it's very simple.

There's people that are straight intellectually stupid.

Intellectually stupid that are buried in cash

because this isn't about smarts.

Intellectual smarts, it's not.

It's just creating new habits

on how you look at money, how you spend money,

how you manage money, how you invest money

once you get it.

How I Do Smart Home Lighting Setup In Small Spaces - Part 1: Cost and Methods - Duration: 7:27.

Hello Automaters. Thanks for tuning in again. I'm a little under the weather so

I'm gonna keep myself off-screen a lot here and do a lot of narration but what

I want to do today is show you part one how I do smart home lighting in

smaller spaces. So I'm going to show you a closet in a laundry room as well as

another type of closet basically with a door on it and what I'm going to do with

those different spaces is tell you how much it cost for me to go ahead and set

up this smart lighting system and then on top of that tomorrow what I will do

is give you part two which is the how to set that for the first part of the tour

let's head over to my laundry room where I have a pair of Sengled Element Classic light

bulbs connected to a Samsung Smartthings Hub so you can see the two light bulbs

in that space so you can do this with multiple bulbs if you need to and that's

a multi-purpose sensor that as I close the door it's creating the automation to

just shut off the light so this ensures that the laundry room door stays closed

because the sound bugs me but it allows you to also as the door opens ensure

that there's lighting immediately now you can see how close here as I just

open up the door a little bit how close the sensor has to be in order to trigger

and you could add time delays to this if you wanted to delay how long it takes

for it to shut in the laundry room here's all of the equipment that you

would be required to have a Samsung Smartthings hub you will need one of

those but then you can replicate this system throughout your home a hundred

times so you only need one of these hubs and then you can go out and get many

many devices now the hub is $70 to start then you can add single element bulbs

these are $10 for a one pack and it actually goes down from there they can

make a direct connection to Samsung smartthings hub without their own hubs

so this is literally a $10 add-on now the multi-purpose sensor you saw was an

older version or of version two of Samsung Smartthings but

you can also use the version three it is a $20 multi-purpose sensor and both

pieces stick to your doorframe with 3M tape that comes in the box so that's the

entire cost if you want to do this the first time it is $70 plus another 10

plus another 20 it is $100 to start but thereafter every room is essentially $30

to replicate the laundry room setup that you saw. If you need multiple bulbs

obviously you're adding another $10 every time now let's head up to my

bedroom and we're going to go into my closet where I have a Philips Hue bulb

attached again to Samsung Smartthings and what I've also put is a motion

sensor so you can see as I enter the room the light fades on and that's one

nice thing about Philips Hue bulbs and then you can see the motion sensor now I

had to play with the direction of that motion sensor a little bit but there's

the Philips Hue bulb at the top there so yeah that direction of this motion

sensor I had to move it kind of to the side because it actually saw really far

into my bedroom so you have to do some playing there now the thing with both of

these setups is that you will need to leave your light switch on so that's

going to be a requirement for both of these two setups that I've done in the

laundry room and in my walk-in closet the closet solution gets a little more

complicated when you're talking about starting out and the costs now what I'll

tell you is you will need a Philips Hue hub which comes in at around $60 but you

have to buy starter kits from Philips and the base starter kit with four bulbs

in it is $100 so that puts the relative worth of the hub at about $60 you would

also with my setup need a Samsung Smartthings hub and we've already talked

about that being $70 on top of that you would then need to buy the motion sensor

which is a $25 add-on so all told for your initial setup $100 for the 4-pack

Philips bulbs and the hub a $70 touch for the Samsung SmartThings hub and $25

for the motion sensor puts you at a hundred and ninety five dollars us but

there after once you're just adding rooms and let's assume you only need one

bulb that is a on average twelve dollar bulb from Philips hue and a $25 motion

sensor from Samsung SmartThings so on average every room you add will be

thirty seven dollars or if you need two bulbs up to about fifty dollars now

there is a third option and Philips you has their own motion sensor that you can

go and purchase and they sell for around $40 us right now you can see from the

webpage I'm on it's a $30 u.s. product right now and when you buy in multiples

they do go down in overall so what you could do is eliminate the need for a

Samsung SmartThings hub entirely if you didn't want to use that and some of the

other solutions you've seen in this video you could go ahead and add that

and what that means for your cost is if we assume this is a $40 motion sensor

plus a $12 bulb it is fifty two dollars to do every room and you would only

initially need the Philips hue hub and after that you could just continue to

add rooms for that fifty two dollars so now let's move on just to a closed door

closet a very simple smart home solution the easiest solution for a closed door

closet basically you don't need necessarily lighting in there and all

this is is a small sensor right here this is a motion sensor and what it will

do is as it senses motion it will turn on this strip light right here it's just

an LED strip light and it's very very low-power know initially what you do is

you put in four triple-a batteries in here and then the device is live and

I'll leave links down below for all of the products that I go through here

today but this is a $15.00 for a closet for a smaller closet solution what I

would tell you is because of the 3m tape you just stick it on the wall wherever

you'd like it we'll need to see the door open and

closed in order to kind of sense that motion and turn on correctly but this is

a very very simple solution for what I would call smart home lighting now one

last thing to tell you about these I have these outdoors because really I'm

not worried about a $15.00 device I have these in sheds and so basically as you

enter my sheds they're turning on as you go to different parts of the shed so

there you go guys that's the cost and the different methods that I use to do

smart home lighting in small spaces at my home come back tomorrow for part two

of this where I show you how to actually set these up

Smart Cities Challenge Finalist: Côte Saint-Luc, QC - Duration: 1:33.

The smart cities challenge is a competition that calls on Canadian communities to explore

how data and connected technology can achieve meaningful outcomes for residents

we're going for the 10 million dollar price and our team consist of the entire city

We're all working together, all the departments, we have Marc Chriqui who is our technical director

we have our city manager here today Tanya Abramovitch, I'm the mayor of Côte Saint-Luc

So everybody's involved in this project

So we have a very large senior population over like 1/3rd of our population and we want to use technology to make sure

that they can live safely and independently for a longtime in their home because it improves their quality of life

We entered that challenge because it's been our mission since 1964

We were the first city that has a volunteering emergency medical services, we have volunteers that is on patrol and we have all type of services for seniors

So, this is a logical extension to what we do best

Smart Windows - Duration: 1:36.

Does an alarm wake you in the morning or is it sunrise burning your eyelids?

Or the sound of traffic on the road? Most people would close their windows

and switch on the aircon to shut the heat and noise out but that means a

higher electricity bill. Worse by consuming more electricity, you are

burning more fossil fuels. Contributing to climate change and melting icecaps.

Here are two ways that A*STAR researchers have come up with to reduce

noise and carbon footprint. Firstly, you can add speakers onto windows.

Wait!

Speakers? Well they are special speakers.

They are fitted on smart windows that

detect noise and send up sound with opposing phases that cancels noise,

so it seems quieter indoors. And the thing is, it's as thin as paper and transparent

almost as if it's invisible. So what about the heat and light problem?

You know how some sunglasses for just a level of darkness according to how sunny it is.

Our smart windows behave in the same way. When it's bright and hot the windows become darker.

How? They contain a special coating that blocks almost all

heat and admits 80% of visible light. A*STAR researchers are working with

companies and government agencies to fine-tune these technology.

And you may have these windows ready in a few years time.
