2018 BMW M5 Review | motoring.com.au - Duration: 4:25.
BMW's M5 has taken many different forms over its lifetime.
Inline six, naturally aspirated V10 – and nearly everything in between.
But arguably the biggest change yet for the storied performance sedan has just arrived.
This is the sixth-generation F90 M5.
And quite simply, it's going to knock your socks off.
Since we're talking about one of BMW's most famous nameplates, that's a big call.
But the new F90 M5 has some big credentials.
The headline stats: Twin-turbo V8, all-wheel drive, and 0-100 in just 3.4 seconds.
This is a luxury limousine capable of bothering many supercars.
And it has just arrived, priced at $200,000.
First the engine.
It's a 4.4-litre unit that makes 441kW and 750Nm.
It is mildly derived from the predecessor M5 but sports two new turbochargers and high
pressure direct fuel injection, running exclusively via an eight speed automatic transmission.
But the bigger advent for 2018 is that of four-wheel drive.
In essence, you get three different modes: four-wheel drive, four wheel drive sport and
2wd, which can only be engaged with all the stability control systems turned off.
In any mode, the M5 lacks for very little.
On the road, it genuinely feels like BMW has skipped a generation in terms of on-road manners
The way it picks up speed will blow your mind.
I feel like it sets a new benchmark.
Yes you're getting 3.4 second 0-100km/h time, the sort of speed that will put in a
jail cell.
Equally it balances all that on-road nous with functional day-to-day ergonomics.
You're getting a little bit of trademark stiffness through the tyre walls.
Everything is quite well cossetted.
Tyre noise is better.
More than that, the M5 is no longer a straight-line sledgehammer.
BMW says the new model weighs less than its predecessor despite more moving parts underneath,
at just over 1800kg.
AWD system is imperceptible.
On the speed-camera roads of Vic, it's hard to push the car to its limits.
So for that reason alone we're going to take it to the track
Music up
Cut to track footage.
Up the pace and the M5 responds emphatically.
Poised, composed and deceptively quick – it links together a circuit like Sandown like
a work of art.
The gearbox, the engine, the chassis, and the electronics.
Everything is strung together perfectly.
And, when the right occasion calls, it drifts like a dream.
In fact, the M5 holds the Guiness World Record for the longest consecutive drift… some
eight hours!
Even with the advent of all-wheel drive, BMW has stayed true to the roots of M5 with the
F90.
A luxury performance sedan with a supercar turn of speed and, increasingly, cornering
ability?
This car hits every mark and then some.
