(music) - [Narrator] Today
on Designing Spaces, we sent our very own Jaques
Slade from LA to Miami to meet the Andreus,
a family that lives in a beautiful
Spanish-style home in need of a
technological improvement.
Our friends at Xfinity Home from Comcast
will upgrade the already-existing security system
and add the latest in automated devices
to turn this house into a smart home.
Plus, with the Xfinity Home app, the controls are at
their fingertips.
(upbeat music) - Being a victim
of a home burglary is an unsettling thought.
My name is Jaques Slade.
Today I will introduce you to the Andreus,
a family of four living in south Florida
who decided to get peace of mind after their car was broken
into in front of their house.
- Hey.
- Hello.
- You must be Jaques.
- I am.
- Nice to meet you.
When I met Jaques, I thought he was so pleasant,
such a great guy, really techy, and I really just
enjoyed his energy.
So welcome to Miami.
- Yes, it's very nice here.
- Yeah.
- Actually, it kind of reminds me of LA a little bit.
- Cool.
- There's like palm trees and sunshine,
so it kind of feels the same.
- Ah, you know.
- A little more humid here.
- We got a little bit more flavor over here.
- Yes, okay, I'll take that.
(laughing) The Andreus family is
absolutely fantastic.
Sandra, she's the mom, the dancer.
She's the artist of the family.
- Look, Jaques is here.
This is my husband Juan.
- Hey, Juan, how are you?
- Hi, how are you?
- I'm well, I'm well.
The dad, he's a lawyer.
He has his own practice.
Then, we have the two boys, Julian and Cabo.
Julian, he plays the drums, really smart kid,
really on top of things.
Then, we have Cabo.
Cabo is very artistic and he has lots of personality
and you can see that he definitely takes
after his mother in that way.
So the dog, Lupe, is full of energy,
just a really fun, energetic dog.
I really like Lupe.
I might take Lupe home.
So we have some really exciting stuff for you guys today.
I think you're really, really going to like it,
so let's get started.
Talk to me.
Why Xfinity?
- Well, shortly after we moved in, my car was broken into.
They stole a few things from it and we just felt
a little unsafe.
We decided, you know, best to have some sort
of at least basic home security system and that's why.
They got into the car.
They took a few of my personal effects.
They even opened the trunk and took a few things
out of the trunk.
Two small children, you know, we thought we needed some
added security in the house and that's the main
reason we decided to add more sensors
and greater security to the overall house.
- What sort of system do you have installed now?
- Three motion sensors throughout certain
parts of the house and two window sensors
and then just the actual alarm keypad system itself.
- It's a good system.
It's definitely protecting their home,
but we want to add a few more bells and whistles
to make their lives a little easier and to also show them
the capabilities of the Xfinity system.
One of the enhancements of a smart home
often involves cameras.
Is that something that you guys are open to,
having security cameras here at the home?
- Definitely.
- Yeah.
- When my car was broken into like we were talking
about before, that happened right in the
very front of the house.
So a security camera in that area would be great.
I leave to work at around eight o'clock in the morning.
Sandra leaves at about 8:15, she takes the kids to school,
and then we're out of the house the entire day.
- [Jaques] The Andreus decided to install home security
from Xfinity that included 24/7 professional monitoring
with fast response time, real-time alerts,
and remote access on their phones.
Now, with the surge in smart home devices,
they want to enhance their security system.
My goal is making sure that they get the latest security
and automation devices for their needs.
- So how do you pronounce your name?
- Jaques.
- Jaques.
- Like Jacques Cousteau.
- Oh, okay.
So it's not Jack.
- Not Jack or Ja-quis.
- Or en espanol es Joaquin.
- So one of the funny things about my name
is that it's really simple to say,
but a lot of people get it wrong.
It's Jaques Slade.
There's an S on the end, so I get Jacks
or I get Jocks or I get Jack-ees or today, if you're by Uber
driver, you call me Wah-kez.
Alright, guys, so one of the cooler places in the house
is this room 'cause it has a lot of smart connected devices,
but you can't really see them.
(upbeat music)
(upbeat music) - The Andreus is
a family of four living in the Shenandoah
neighborhood of Miami.
This is a changing neighborhood and the family wants
the peace of mind of having the latest in home
security and automation.
In addition to that, they are very excited about the idea
of turning their house into a smart home.
I have invited in my friends from Comcast
to help us with all that.
(rock music) So the guys just
finished the install.
First, we have door window sensors.
So we have one here and there's actually going to be one
on every door that faces the outside.
If they go in and out of that door, they'll get an alert
and then we also placed them in the bedrooms
on the bedrooms windows as well.
We just thought it was really important
that they have protection there and that they were notified
if those windows were opened.
Then, you'll also see that we have motion sensors
in this room, in the family room.
They're in the laundry room, but they're also in
the bedrooms as well.
- Awesome.
- Excellent.
- Now, looking across, we see that you have
a smart thermostat.
The family already had some smart devices
which we were really excited about,
but what we were able to do is integrate those into one app
so they only have one place to go
whenever they want to control everything.
So the first thing we hooked up was their smart thermostat.
From what I understand, Juan likes to keep it
a little cooler in the house than Sandra.
- Yeah.
In Miami it gets really warm and Juan likes to keep the
temperature nice and cool, so at times he drops
it to like 69 degrees which is, for me,
sweater weather.
- See, with the app, you can just put it back to
where it's supposed to be.
- I like that feature.
(laughs) - [Jaques] Yeah.
- A lot.
(laughing) - Then, we also connected it
to the Xfinity smoke detector as well.
- So you know our house was built in 1938
and it's been added onto over the years
so the other thing I love about having this system
and adding this system: it's basically integrating
the new with the old.
- Then, right to your right we have the smart light bulb.
That way you can control that from the app as well.
One of the things that we're adding
that we think they're really going to like
is the smart light bulb.
They'll be able to change the color temperature
of the light, they'll be able to turn it on,
they'll be able to turn it off.
Alright, guys, so one of the cooler places in the house
is this room 'cause it has a lot of smart connected devices,
but you can't really see them which is really
part of the plan.
First, we have the cameras here.
This will allow you to see this room,
but there's not only one.
There's actually three here at the house.
There's one in the backyard and there's one in
the front as well.
- After having the cameras, I actually feel a lot safer.
I now check (laughing) the activity on my app.
- One of the enhancements that I really like
about this system is that for 24 hours a day
they have live surveillance, but then they also have a 10-day
archive so they can go back and watch things that
happened in the past.
To your right, we have a smart outlet.
One of the coolest things of this whole setup
is the X1 voice remote.
It lets you control everything from your TV.
Check this out.
Xfinity Home, back camera.
You can talk into it and find the television show
that you want to watch, but one of the things
that we really like about it is how it integrates into
the security system.
As you can see, pops on the back camera,
but you can also do the front camera,
and then you also have the camera for this room as well.
- Oh, Lupe.
- Hi, Lupe.
- No more searching on the guide for what's that channel again.
I say the channel and it comes on the TV.
I can also control all the smart features,
everything from the thermostat to the different systems
that are integrated with the remote control.
I can control those all right there
from the touch of a button on my hand.
- I know you guys are dining with friends tonight
and so I don't want to impose, so I'm gonna pass off the
remote responsibilities to you.
- Thank you.
- I've heard he's a bit of a control freak.
- Yeah, I know.
- I figure, I know who to pass the remote to.
(laughing) I know.
Enjoy the system and I'll see you guys soon.
(upbeat music) - It's great having you here.
Thank you very much for coming.
- [Man] Oh, thank you.
- [Sandra] Thank you.
- Thank you for having us.
- [Man] You've been busy, right?
- Yeah, so we have like a few devices
that have been added to our home thanks to Xfinity
and the wonderful thing is that we can control them
all through our phone.
There's an amazing Xfinity Home app and you can control
like the arming and disarming the house.
- [Woman] Gosh.
- We've got a camera system now.
We've got the thermostat.
We can raise and lower the temperature.
We've got it smoke detectors.
- And you can even turn on a light inside the house
to make it look like if somebody's there.
- I've got a notification.
- Oh, wait.
What's that?
A smoke alarm?
- Yeah, looks like it.
- [Woman] Oh no.
- Let's take a look.
Go to the camera system.
- [Sandra] Oh.
Oh, it's Rachel.
She burned-- - Yeah, it looks like
she burned something.
I got the notification that the smoke alarm had gone off,
I turned on the phone, saw the camera,
and then I was able to see that what it actually was
was my babysitter burned something.
What a relief it was to know that nothing had
actually happened in the house.
- Yeah, okay.
- Whew.
- [Sandra] My goodness.
- [Woman] Could've been worse.
- Yeah.
(laughing) Alright.
Cheers.
This Miami traffic, I mean, it's crazy over here
on this schedule.
(speaking Spanish) I know that I speak Spanglish.
(upbeat Latin music)
- There are many products out there today
that say they provide home security.
While they may offer remote access, they don't provide
professional monitoring or emergency response.
With Xfinity Home, 24/7 professional monitoring
with fast response time is included in your service.
Whether you're home or away, our award-winning central
monitoring station keeps an eye out on your house.
So if there's a security issue, if a fire is detected,
or something else, we'll dispatch the
authorities as needed.
Battery and cellular backup are also included,
so when the power goes out, you're still protected.
(upbeat music) - [Jaques] Sandra is
a contemporary dancer and choreographer.
She's now producing an experimental work
for an upcoming concert.
Her schedule is usually very demanding and unpredictable.
- Today, we're here at the Miami Light Project
and we're rehearsing for a new work that I'm producing.
Of course, Murphy's Law, I forgot to disarm the house
and I'm expecting a package today
and of course, I'm not gonna be able
to make it on time to pick up the kids.
So you know.
C'est la vie.
- So Sandra the other day goes to work, right.
She works at the Miami Light Project.
Then, when she was there, she realized she forgot
to arm the alarm.
So the great thing is she opened up the application,
at the touch of a button, she was able to arm the alarm,
saw that all the sensors were closed, and that was it.
- So this is the app and if I want to like disarm
or arm the house, just go here.
I select my mode.
I can go stay, away night right on the phone.
- Wow.
- So look at this.
I love this part.
Look at the camera.
- It's so clear.
- [Sandra] Yeah, that's the package that I was waiting for.
- [Woman] Yay, so you know it's there.
Yay.
- I know.
(upbeat Latin music) Not only was I not able to
make it to the kids' school on time, I'm not even gonna be
able to make it to the house to open the door for
Rachel, the babysitter.
Thankfully, she was able to pick them up.
This Miami traffic, I mean, it's crazy over here
on this schedule.
(speaking Spanish) I know that I speak Spanglish.
I mean, that's just kind of like a Miami thing.
(ringing) - [Rachel] Hello?
- Hey, Rachel, how are you?
- [Rachel] Hola, girlfriend.
Como estas?
- You know, Miami traffic.
I'm good, I'm good.
We really mix things in there.
(speaking Spanish) I just wanted to thank you
so much for helping us out and I'm gonna disarm
the system, okay.
- [Mimi] Okay, (speaking Spanish).
And you're welcome.
- Alright, Mimi, I'll see you soon.
(speaking Spanish) So I'm a first-generation
American.
My father was born in Havana, Cuba.
My mother was born in Medellin, Colombia.
So we have a few artists in the family.
It just so happens that there's sort of a family tie
with Gabriel Garcia Marquez who was a famous
Colombian writer.
He was best friends with my grandmother's first cousin,
Alvaro Cepeda Samudio.
You know, I was always inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez's work
and the connection with the family.
So I grew up really finding the importance
of learning my roots and my tradition
and also the importance of speaking both languages,
English and Spanish.
(upbeat music) - [Juan] Hi, guys.
- [Sandra] Hey.
- [Juan] Got pizza.
- Oh, thank you, babe.
- Yeah, yeah.
- It's time to eat.
It's time to eat.
- Alright, come on.
Another great part of the system is the xFi app.
So the xFi app allows me to control the WiFi access points
basically throughout the house.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, I'm gonna disconnect the WiFi.
- He's not paying attention.
- Don't worry about it.
I'll take care of it.
- [Sandra] Eating is not important.
- It's not working.
- [Sandra] Mmm hmm.
Hand it over.
Let's go.
- Okay, let's eat some pizza, party.
(upbeat music)
- One of the great benefits of Xfinity Home is
that you can customize your system
to fit the needs of your home and family.
Many customers add cameras and 24/7 video recording
to their system so they can check in on things at home
in real time and also scroll back
to see what happened previously.
10 days of video is stored in the cloud
that you can download and save and share with your
friends and family.
You can also further personalize your system
with smart devices like thermostats,
lighting, and door locks.
We've partnered with some of the leaders in the industry
to give you the choice.
You can control all of it from your fingertips
with the Xfinity Home mobile app or X1.
(upbeat music) - So I allowed the
Andreus a couple days to get familiar
with their system.
Today, I'm gonna go back to see how everything worked out.
- Jaques.
- Hey, how are you?
- Hey.
- Good to see you again.
- Thanks for coming.
- So I had the pastelitos.
- Yes?
- And can I just say, absolutely amazing.
(speaking Spanish) - I think I can say I'm
a pastelito guy now.
Is that a thing?
Anyone know?
Anyone?
Is pastelito guy a thing?
- Juan.
(speaking Spanish) - Hey.
- [Jaques] Hey, man.
- Great to see you again.
- Good to see you as well.
How are you?
- Not bad, not bad at all.
- Alright, let me take a note here.
I see that he has the remote.
(laughs) - Oh yeah.
- Did you give it to him?
- Oh, no, no, he's made friends with it.
- He's made friends with the remote?
- Yeah.
- Show me something.
You know how to use it?
- Oh yeah, watch this.
Play soccer.
- [Jaques] Okay, alright.
- [Juan] Pretty cool, huh?
- [Sandra] Yeah.
- Point proven.
Point proven.
(laughing) Also, I know we added
a few smart devices to your system already, but
you can actually add more to the system if you wanted to.
So say maybe there was a smart lock
you wanted to put on the front door
or if you wanted to add more lights
to add more accents to different areas of the house
which seems very nice or the garage.
If you want to use a garage door opener,
you can add that to your system as well
and you control it all directly from your app.
- Sweet.
That's pretty cool.
- Absolutely.
- Also, the remote can put the menu into Spanish.
I know both of your parents often come over
and watch the kids, so if they wanted the option
to actually change the menu into Spanish,
they have the option to do that directly from the remote
as well which is pretty cool.
- That is very cool.
Juan and I, we really like to go out every once in a while
and thankfully my parents come over
and take care of the kids.
One thing that we found really interesting
is that they're able to change the language
interface of the system so they could check out all
the menu options in Spanish.
Does it make margaritas?
- It does not make margaritas.
(laughs) We're working on that.
It's in beta.
It's in beta.
- Okay.
- Yeah, yeah.
(laughing) - [Narrator] To
finish explaining the system to the Andreus,
we have invited our friend Derrick Dicoi
from Xfinity Home from Comcast who brings some amazing
tips for the family.
- Hi.
- [Derrick] Hi, I'm Derrick.
- Sandra.
Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- Come on in.
- Thank you for having me.
- How are you, sir?
- I'm great.
It's good to see you.
- Good to see you as well.
So remember I was telling you about the rules and the scenes
that you can set up in the system?
- Yeah.
- Well, Derrick is here to explain all of that.
He's the expert.
- Yeah.
And you've got the T-shirt for it, right?
- I do.
- Let's go.
Alright.
- The T-shirt wins.
Alright, let's go.
(upbeat music) - So a rule is basically
something you can create to be notified on
a regular basis.
So for example, everyday you can say,
"Hey, at 3 p.m., disarm the system,"
so that when your kids come home,
you don't have to worry about them setting off the alarm.
What's more important is something called scenes.
- I know what scenes are.
I mean, I've worked in the theater and in dance
and I was like, "How does this tie into
Xfinity Home security?"
- So imagine a world where at 8:15 everyday or about there,
when you leave your house, your system arms,
all the lights that you want to turn off, turn off,
and the thermostat adjusts to the perfect temperature.
So when you leave your house, you never have to worry about,
"Hey, did I turn that light off?
"Did I turn the thermostat down?
"Did I arm the system?"
Everything is just done for you.
- I think he loves that.
(laughs) Because he complains a lot
that sometimes I will occasionally leave
the one light on.
(laughing) - The husbands crossed the bear.
(laughing) - In a sense, it's almost
like an energy saver, so you guys can set it up
to automatically kind of turn down the house.
- That's great.
(upbeat music) When we got all the devices
installed in the home, it was like Christmas for Juan.
He was like a kid in a candy shop.
- I can control all sorts of different functions
from within the home: lighting systems, the AC system.
All from the touch of a button on my phone.
- We live such hectic lives that anything
that can make our lives just a little easier
and a little bit more efficient will definitely go a long way.
- One thing that I learned about this experience is
that if you give the family the tools that they need,
they'll be able to customize them to their own.
Every family is different and with the system,
you're allowed to really customize it
to individual situations.
This family, they wanted the cameras,
they wanted the motion detectors,
they wanted to connect their smart devices,
so we were able to do that for them.
What I really hope is that this helps them feel safer
in their home, but it also makes their lives easier.
It's not about just saying they have this cool
security system.
We want to give them something that they can use
and adds value to them.
I feel like we were able to accomplish that.
