When the new SR 99 tunnel opens in Seattle, it will be one of the smartest tunnels ever built.

Let's start with ventilation.

In normal traffic, vehicles pull fresh air through the tunnel using something called the piston effect.

Every few seconds, electronic sensors on the tunnel walls sample the air.

When there's an uptick in emissions, like during a traffic jam, the sensors activate the tunnel's jet fans.

The strong fans pull fresh air from the entrances and push it into the tunnel.

If more help is needed to clear the air, for example in a car fire, large, powerful exhaust fans automatically kick in.

They act like giant vacuum cleaners, suctioning exhaust and smoke through louvers on the tunnel wall,

pulling it through the tunnel's ventilation corridor, then up and out of the large yellow stacks of the operations buildings.

There's a fan at the base of each stack Ventilation is just one example of how the

systems in this smart tunnel talk and listen to each other.

The fire suppression system is another.

More than eight miles of fiber optic heat sensors line the tunnel ceilings.

If the sensors detect heat, they activate the fans and alert tunnel staff.

A live camera shot then pops up on the tunnel operator's screen in the WSDOT Traffic Management Center.

If there's no fire, the tunnel operator stops the sprinklers from turning on.

But if there IS a fire, sprinklers activate OVER the fire.

The tunnel is divided into more than 100 safety zones to allow this targeted response.

Tunnel operators can switch on electronic signs to let drivers know what's ahead.

And can also make announcements on public address and AM/FM radio override systems.

In the rare case of an emergency, flashing lights lead to the exit doors, where inside, there's a safe place to wait or get assistance.

The exit corridor also has a separate ventilation system so fresh air stays inside, even when the exit doors are opened.

Finally, if an evacuation is needed, a protected passageway allows safe exit from the tunnel.

These are just some of the ways WSDOT has safety covered so you can travel with confidence when the new tunnel opens.

Why It's Dumb to Buy a Smart Car - Duration: 4:23.

rev up your engines,

do you think it's a smart idea to buy a smart car, now to understand if it is, you

need a little history lesson about the difference between Europe and the United

States, now the Romans, they built roads, they were eight Roman feet wide, which is

a little bit less than seven point nine feet, I guess the Romans had small feet

so in Europe, hey there's lot of really small streets in the cities, there isn't all

that much room, but here in Houston Texas, by law the city streets have to be at

least 28 feet, from curb to curb and many are much larger, so in Europe and many

parts of Asia, something like this Toyota Highlander it's seen as a giant vehicle

where here, it's just the normal sized SUV, so in Europe in 1993 the swatch

company, yes the people who made the watches, I mean do you really want to buy

a car from a company that makes a little watches, so then in 1993 they decided to

make a little urban car, they partnered up with Volkswagen, but Volkswagen they

thought about it and said we're not going to do that, so then they partnered

up with mercedes-benz, the name smart car is kind of an anagram of swatch and

Mercedes what they claim, and they started to build them in France, now

realize that the smart car is a very short car, the length of the smart car is

actually equal to the width of an average American parking space, not the

length, but the width, so they're easy to park in small spaces, but at the same

time, they're such tiny cars, if you're sitting in one and you're driving on a

highway and you're looking way up at an 18-wheeler, you're not going to feel too

safe, and they don't have too much power, originally they had 60 to 70 horsepower

with a vehicle that weighs almost a whole ton, almost 2,000 pounds, they were

very slow cars, and of course Americans, since we're such lazy people, mainly

we drive automatic transmissions like this one, in Europe they have standard

transmissions, they were a little quicker but with an automatic transmission these

things are pretty slow, and if you want a comparison, the last

one that they've made with a gasoline engine, put out 89 horsepower with a

turbocharged engine, but it only got 33 miles per gallon in the city and 39 on the highway,

in the same year, you can buy a Honda Civic that was turbocharged, which had a

hundred and seventy four horsepower and got 32 in the city and 42 on the highway

better all-around gas mileage for an actual car that four people can fit in, yes they

actually have quite a bit of legroom, and granted they are kind of cute in their

own strange small sort of way, if you like little cars, and with their engines

hiding in the back, the engine and the transmission is all on the rear wheels

so they actually do handle reasonably well, you can see the bottom of the

vehicle, there's the engine and the transmission the driveshaft all neatly

packed into the back, now last year in the United States they only sold five

thousand four hundred and forty of these smart cars, so it's not very popular they were

pretty much were a dismal failure in the United States, because really Americans

aren't in love with small kind of little cars, take the Fiat 500

they spent a fortune advertising it, at the peak in 2012 they did sell over fifty

thousand Fiat 500s, but last year even Fiat only sold 5500 Fiat 500s in the

United States, so they're pretty much a dismal failure too, and when it comes to

smart cars, there's other reasons well you shouldn't think about buying one, one

it's a Mercedes Benz conglomerate, the parts of them cost a small fortune and

in the United States, they're relatively hard to get even now, and as of 2018

smart car says, they're no longer going to make gasoline or diesel cars, they're

only going to make all-electric cars, so if you have a gasoline one, guess what,

getting parts for it and getting it repaired, is going to be even harder, it's

something I don't advise people to do unless they just want a toy to play

around with, because you can get them pretty cheap used now, but all in all

buying a smart car is probably not such a smart thing here in the United States

so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to

ring that Bell!

Smart Seder: Tzafun with Mr. Brian Singer - Duration: 4:32.

Hi. I'm Mr. Singer and I've been asked to talk with you a little bit about the

Tzafun part of the Seder. Now Tzafun means hidden and this is where we go and

we search for the afikomen. And then we eat a piece of the afikomen to conclude

our Seder meal. Now let's recap — earlier in the evening during Yachatz,

we broke the middle matzah. We hid a piece of it and that part is called the

afikomen. And now we're gonna go off and search for it. There are different minhagim,

different customs, as to how we go about doing this. In some houses

the adults hide the afikomen, the children find it and they hold it for ransom. In

other houses it's the opposite. The children hide the afikomen and the

adults have to find it. Now back in Canada what we did is we would take the

afikomen wrap it in a white napkin and then take it outside and put it in a snow

bank. Trust me that kept the kids busy for hours — sometimes for days, but I don't

recommend that because the mitzvah of Tzafun is to actually eat the

afikomen. Now I know what you're thinking, okay this religion is crazy. We just had

a huge meal and now you want me to eat more, right? And the answer is, yes, but the

good news is that to fulfill the mitzvah, you only have to eat the amount of say,

an olive. And that takes care of it.

So now you

know what to do and you're probably wondering why do we do this. And the

answer is this: the first matzah that we eat at the beginning of the meal is to

fulfill the mitzvah of eating the matzah at the Seder. This matzah is different.

The afikomen we eat in place of eating the Pesach Korban. When the Temple stood

in Yerushalayim, we had a special sacrifice that we would eat. We no longer

have the Temple, sadly, but we do this in its stead. Now you're saying okay, this is

a great, fun way to occupy the kids and maybe even some of the

adults, but I'd like to offer you one hidden meaning of Tzafun — the pun was

intended. On Pesach, we're supposed to see ourselves as if we personally were

redeemed from Egypt. That's right, you and I we were slaves. We got out. A lot of

people during the Seder give thought to, "What is it that I'm currently enslaved by?"

For some people it might be this, it might be technology. For other people

it's other things. The fact is that sometimes the answer isn't so obvious

and it may be hidden from us. And while we're searching for the afikomen it's a

great opportunity to think about what is it that I am enslaved to. What is it

that's hidden inside me that I need to discover in order to truly be free. So

good luck finding the afikomen. Good luck finding what enslaves you and breaking

free from it. And wishing everybody a Chag Kasher V'sameach -

a happy and kosher Pesach.

Come listen to the story, it happened Seder night.

I couldn't find the afikomen, it was just nowhere in sight.

Believe me when I tell ya I looked in every room

well I just couldn't find it and I had to find it soon.

We already made Kiddush, said the Ma Nishtana too,

washed without a bracha 'cause that's what you're supposed to do.

We dipped some parsley, broke the middle matzah right in half.

My friend ate too much maror. We all had a good laugh!

We ate the matzah then we had amazing Pesach food.

I never knew no chametz could actually taste good.

I left, the time to find the afikomen came around

I looked and looked. I'm telling you that it could not be found.

Well finally I went back to the table feeling beat.

And I discovered someone left it there upon my seat.

I gave a sigh and thought, "Well, what a night this has been!"

Wishing you Shana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim!

See you next year in Jerusalem!

Elon Musk calls Swiss police 'smart' for adopting Tesla Model X SUVs - Duration: 3:46.

New Swiss police cruisers will be cleaner, cheaper,

and way faster than the dirtier cars used now.

The Basel-Stadt police department focused on economy and ecology in its decision to

replace current diesel-powered vehicles with Tesla Model X police cars.

Though the department has already faced a backlash from naysayers, particularly in regard

to cost, it does have at least one fan of its decision.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, not one to mince words, called the move a "smart" one.

"Plus," he added, "the bad guys will def not escape."Environmental concerns were

foremost in the search for new police cars.

Because the choice of fully electric vehicles that meet the department's requirements

is limited to a single source, the usual process of soliciting competitive bids was bypassed.

The Tesla Model X more than meets the department's needs.

Current police vehicles in service in the area travel an average 120 miles per day.

That distance falls well within the Tesla's 310-mile range per full charge.

The acquisition plan also includes two electrical charging stations for the central vehicle

storage and maintenance facility, and two stations in each of two additional police

stations.

The Tesla Model X's payload, storage space, and excellent handling figured in the Swiss

decision, but ownership and operational costs plus clean air were the most important factors.

Basel's current diesel police cruisers each cost about $97,000.

At approximately $147,000 fully equipped with specified police equipment, the Tesla initial

purchase cost is higher than the diesel-powered cars they will replace.

Operation and maintenance will cost less for the Teslas and eventual resale value will

be higher, according to the police department.

Overall, the plan is a financial and environmental win.

Drawing from the department's 1 million Swiss franc budget allocation (approximately

$1,048,000), the first of seven ordered Teslas is due to arrive in the fall of 2018.

The rest of the SUVs are slated for delivery in 2019, police spokesperson Martin Schütz

said in an interview with Telebasel.

The Basel police department's decision was relatively easy, despite accusations of police

driving luxury cars and questions by local politicians concerning why BMW or Mercedes

weren't considered.

"The planned replacement of diesel combi vehicles … by the Tesla Model X 100D brings

only advantages in terms of economy and ecology as well as in view of the existing storage

space in the vehicle and safety," Schütz told Telebasel.

Basel-Stadt's isn't the only police department to choose Teslas.

The LAPD uses electric vehicles for various functions and has tested the Tesla Model S

for patrol use.

Police departments in Denver, Colorado; Ontario, Canada; and in England and Luxembourg are

currently testing or employing Tesla Model S sedans, reports Electrek.

Updated on March 22: Added Elon Musk's response to Swiss police using Model X in their fleet.
