Hello everybody! We are at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari
where we'll go on a very important test drive, together with the Centro Porsche Bari!
This isn't just the first drive in a Porsche featured on We Drive
This one is the hybrid version!
First time driving a hybrid car!
We'll drive the new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo 4 E-Hybrid!
Let's see how it goes!
First thing about driving hybrid cars:
at Porsche we say that you mostly drive with your foot
You need to have a velvet touch with your foot
The more delicate you drive, the more km you'll be allowed to do in Electric Mode
See here: there's this econometer in the odometer
As I accelerate, the econometer goes up
As long as the econometer LED is green, you are going in Electric Mode
When you reach the Max sign, the petrol engine takes over
The engine is a 2.9 litres
2.9 Biturbo with 462hp. Exactly
The 330hp of the petrol engine and the 130hp of the electric one combined
I read that you can reach a pretty high speed in Electric Mode
Yes, 130 kph.
You see here there's this rotor
Yeah, the one for the Driving Modes
Exactly
Instead of other modes of models such as the 911
here we have ''E'', it stands for Electric
Then we have ''H'', which stands for Hybrid
And then Sport and Sport Plus
When the car is on ''E''
the petrol engine is completely shut down
Later on you'll try it
you'll feel something like a little step under the gas pedal
This little step is like a mark, you can press the pedal until that mark
and you'll be sure you're driving only in Electric mode
You already know that the batteries charge themselves while the braking and the release of the pedal
so no worries about low batteries issues
You don't have to think about anything
Now the batteries:
the car has 50km of battery life
So you can drive for 50km at 130kph
Of course it'll be more than that
because the batteries charge everytime you brake and release the pedal
When these little arrows go down, it means you're using the batteries
Right now for example we are driving in E-Power
Fully electric
Both from the steering wheel and the touchscreen
I can switch to Hybrid mode
I can drive fully electric even in Hybrid mode
See here the econometer?
But if I need it
I will stomp my foot on the gas pedal and the petrol engine will be engaged
providing me full power
Two important things about this technology
First one: behing a regenerative braking
the braking itself lasts a bit longer than normal
because the first bit of it uses the engine brake, not the brakes themselves
So when you press on the brake, you won't have an immediate braking
all you need to do to have an immediate braking is pressing a little more than normal
It's important for people to know these things about this technology
Second thing: what is the most efficient driving technique on a hybrid car?
It is called sailing
You saw it before, I launched the car
engaging the petrol engine
I reached the speed I wanted to reach
I released the gas pedal to disengage the petrol engine
and I kept driving pressing more gently the gas pedal
so the car kept sailing at that speed but in Electric modeso the car kept sailing at that speed but in Electric mode
In Hybrid mode we have: E-Hold
see the arrow?
It stabilizes the battery life on a level
Imagine being on the freeway
you're heading to a city
and you'll need to drive in Electric mode in the city
but you won't have chances to plug the car anywhere
So in E-Hold you tell the car not to waste this level of battery life
because you'll need all of them while driving through the city
Then there's E-Charge. Did you hear it?
Yes, it engaged the petrol engine, so now it is charging the batteries
Then there's Sport and then Sport Plus
This is awesome
It opened the exhaust valves!
I like to say that this car has two souls:
until now I showed you the ecological and economical soul of it
Now I'll show you the Porsche soul
The sporty one, that should never be missed in a Porsche
You can already hear its sound from the inside
In Sport Plus the car becomes stiffer
I didn't mention it but you have everything in here: active suspensions
all of the safety features available, everything you can imagine
Ok, the improvements in the hybrid technology are super
but you have to feel how improved is the handling of it
Low center of gravity
some times ago the Panamera felt just too big to be a sports car, now...
Sorry, but I have to do it
Ok, now this is the Porsche soul!
From that dial you can see the flux of the batteries
I need to say this:
this one feature reminds me of the ''Back to the future'' Delorean
with its flux capacitors!
That's true!
That was how the '80s people imagined the future cars
and guess what, I'm driving a car from the future!
Last time we sat in a Panamera Sport Turismo
the car was in the showroom, for its debut
but even in that still car, we felt in a completely different automotive age!
The whole thing is changing right now!
It gives me a strange and incredible feeling
driving a car and hearing just the cars around us
not even the smallest sound from this one
By the way, this is the first time driving a Porsche
and also driving a hybrid-electric car for me!
A super cool experience
Oh, first time on a Porsche?
Yes
Nice, straight into the future!
Of course! I'm proud of doing it!
By the way, except from this breathtaking technology
we saw from the outside many details
by which you can know it's not a normal Sport Turismo, but the E-Hybrid:
lime green brake calipers
outside badges and inside digital details in lime green too
and this color reminds me of the 918 Spyder
are the two cars' hybrid technologies similar?
Yes!
This has electric and petrol engine combined such as that hypercar
I find it awesome that Porsche kept the performances and the driving feelings
even with an electric engine!
Exactly!
Many people think ''Electric cars have no sound and give no feelings!''
But, oh boy, this car feels different, believe me!
When people think about electric cars
they think about an old, emotionless Toyota Prius
but this is on another level of feelings!
They just need to enter in this new world
If a person hops on a hybrid car without knowing how it works
he or she will presumably stomp on the gas like on classic petrol engine cars
But they would be left with a car with fuel consumptions of an oil tanker
Without the advantages of the hybrid
Yes, keep in mind this is a car with a petrol engine with 330hp
so if you drive it in Sport it will have high performances
but also pretty high fuel consumptions
Then you have all the advantages of owning a hybrid/electric car:
lower taxes, government incentives, free parking spaces...
This Panamera, with this steering wheel and the rotor
and the setting of the whole driver's view, is the classic Porsche one
You have 5 digital round dials
As you said before, here's the econometer inside the odometer
with the range of the battery life
Yes and with that rotor on the left
you can switch to other trip informations
Down there there's temperature informations, here in the middle the big rev counter
red line at almost 7000rpm
inside it it shows the speed, the gear selected
and the driving mode chosen, E-Power right now
And then on the right there's the battery flux and the zone dedicated to the Electric Mode
It looks esthetically incredible
From the inside too it looks like a spaceship
This central tunnel with touch buttons is phenomenal
Everything's changed, look at the 12'' touchscreen of the infotainment
In the upper middle part of the dashboard there's the beautiful chronograph
It's stunning
Before you gave us a hint of the performances of this Panamera 4 E-Hybrid
and I know there's even the Turbo S E-Hybrid version of this!
680Hp, I suppose that's a monster!
Yes, it is mad!
Ok! Perfect!
Ok, our test drive comes to an end!
Remember, this was the Panamera Sport Turismo 4 E-Hybrid
petrol engine and electric engine combined give you 462hp!
Many many thanks to Centro Porsche Bari and particularly Alexandra, for this amazing test drive!
Thank you!
And thank you also for letting us meet for the first time the Hybrid technology
and the driving experience on a mega Porsche such as this one!
