Auto news on Youtube Dec 1 2017

GTS-versions have been the creme de la creme of Porsche models for ages.

It started with the 911, but family-Porsches like the Panamera and Cayenne became available as GTS.

Just like the Boxster and the Cayman.

The difference always was that in big Porsches, the Turbo S was the top of the range.

But in the Boxster and Cayman, the GTS topped the range.

Of course, that's without mentioning projects like the GT4 and Spyder.

The GTS actually is a normal S-version, with all of the dynamic options and a few extra horsepower as a bonus.

In this case, it's 15 horsepower extra.

That means we've got 365 horsepower in total. Meet the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS.

The magic six-cylinder of its predecessors has been replaced by a four-cylinder.

It's a flat-four though, a turbocharged 2.5-litre flat-four engine.

And to gain that extra 15 horsepower, Porsche hasn't just changed the ECU,

they've also altered the inlet-trajectory and they've tweaked the turbo.

Those are the changes in the drivetrain. If we look at the chassis,

it's been lowered by ten centimetres. It's got torque vectoring thanks to a rear LSD,

the Porsche Chrono-package is fitted as standard, and on the outside you can recognize the GTS by the black accents.

Black wheels, a black logo, a black vent, and some black striping between the rear lights.

And the fun part is, track driving is always done with PDK-gearboxes in Porsches.

I wasn't feeling that today if I'm honest. Coincidentally I saw Hans-Joachim Stuck of Porsche walking around today.

He got a manual gearbox for his hot laps, just look at the tires. But I asked him if I could borrow his one,

and sure enough, he said yes.

It's no secret that I'm having a great day today.

This is one of the best looking tracks I know, the location, the surroundings, it's empty,

and proportionally, it's got more corners than the Nordschleife.

And because I don't have to get on track with the other journalists, because I've got Stuck's car with manual.

Just go out there he said, and everything is right in here.

It's not 'yeah the car is good but the throttle response isn't', no; everything is perfect in this Cayman. It all makes sense.

With the GTS being the top of the line version, you'd expect there's nothing to complain about.

But I have two things I want to point out.

First of all, the GTS-line.

I read about it often. The GTS is supposed to be the inbetween-version between the normal S-version,

for the 911, Cayman, Panamera or anything, and the GT3 in the 911's case.

But that's not the case.

The GTS isn't really different than a S-version.

It's the same with this. You have the Cayman S with the same engine,

which is down 15 horsepower. But the rigidity improvements and the sharpening of the chassis,

are all individual options for the Cayman S.

If you get the sports chassis, the Porsche Chrono-package, et cetera et cetera,

you'll get exactly the same car. Technically, it isn't different.

The only thing Porsche has done is collect all of those options, make them standard, give it 15 horsepower extra so you can boast about it to your neighbor,

and add some details on the outside, some GTS-logo's on the inside.

But that's it. It's not a real step in the direction of a real GT-model, or the GT4.

So actually, the added value is very small.

Porsche would be right to say; 'So what, we sell lots of them, so we'll continue building them.'

You won't hear me complaining though, because they're great cars.

But if we're talking added value, I was thinking.

Recently, Porsche revealed something special. Or rather, they revealed the pictures.

A 911 T. So what's that?

A 911 T is a 911 with the base-engine from the Carrera, with the new, shorter manual gearbox,

but with all of the sports features you can get on the 911 GTS. Chrono-package and all.

So you'll have a base Porsche, which is very dynamic at the same time.

What was I saying?

If they were to do that to the Cayman, you'd get the 2.0-litre from the standard version.

And that's actually a tad nicer than this 2.5-litre, because it revs faster.

You've got less power, but okay.

If you add a manual gearbox with short gears, you get the racy feel with a maximum drop of 1500 RPM from the limiter,

but with the same sports chassis and the same balance of this GTS.

If they make it cheaper, you'd have a mini-911 R.

If a car like that would become available for a 'normal' person... I mean a GT3, or a 911 R is crazily expensive.

It's even worse when they're second hand.

Porsche should make those capabilities more accessible, with a car which is fully focused on dynamic driving.

No matter how good this GTS is, a similar version based on the base version of the Cayman...

That would be heaven...

Porsche GT3 RS vs Ferrari Speciale by Leon Taoubes פרארי 458 ספציאלה מול פורשה - Duration: 5:27.

My best childhood memories are of me reading car magazines,

dreaming that one day I would be the guy to drive them.

and to tell everybody what they were like

Today I had the opportunity to make that wish come true,

and to finish 2017 with a twist!

What can be more special than taking extreme cars,

the GT3 RS from Porsche and 458 Speciale from Ferrari,

and for the first time in the world test them together on one track in Israel.

The differences between the cars are clear to see from the outside.

The GT3 RS is first of all a 911.

A beetle with an engine in the back, if you want.

325-mm wide tires at the rear,

wrapped around 21-inch wheels.

There's an active rear axle and a huge wing,

forcing all of its weight to the ground.

German tradition and developed by the

best engineers in the world

to create probably the best track car on the planet.

But it has just one problem.

The opposition is the 458 Speciale.

Built on the magical base of the 458

but with 80% different parts.

For 3 million NIS, you get less.

Less weight, thinner glass,

titanium bolts.

They even took away the radio.

And you know what – it's ok! There's no radio in an F1 car either.

And just like F1 cars that finish their carrier only to rise in value,

this too goes up in price each year.

There's no point even speaking about the design.

Laugh all you want, it' s like one of the best things

that we do with no clothes.

The difference between how the cars drive is immense!

The Porsche has a roll cage, bucket seats,

alcantara steering wheel –

it's a proper track tool!

You need to be very agile on the entrance to the corner,

put the weight to the front, feel the front loading up…

Gas at the right time! Then you can slide!

It's fun when it's done right.

Real fun,

but not many drivers will manage it.

In the Ferrari, it's the opposite.

Everyone will succeed.

There are 4 different types of slide control.

The computerized differential accelerates for you while you drift!

It feels like an extension of your body.

You can commit to any corner, with one hand, drift!

3rd gear. One hand! Just one hand!

How do they do it?!

At the end of the day,

the stopwatch plays its part on the race track.

Gently with the gas, gently!

That is a crazy thing!

That's the stuff that gets under your skin!

It's the stuff that makes you …

Just a touch of the brakes, getting on the brakes, wait for the gas.

Gently, gently, gently. Gas – full on!

Just by touching the brakes,

the mid-engine setup makes balancing the car so easy.

Come off the power, early apex.

Gently on the gas, here we go.

Transfer the weight, off the gas,

leave the engine to oooh,

I cannot speak.

I cannot tell you what needs to be done!

Just trust me that it's just mega fun.

It's fun! What a thing!!!

How focused you need to be!

You know, for a long time I have not been committed like that.

I do not want to compare it with "you know what",

but that's exactly it!

There is nothing like it!

The way it responds is incredible!

Carefull with the gas! Full on!

What an engine!

GT3 RS against Speciale on the track!

On this small race track, the Porsche was

faster by 0.02 seconds.

And she insisted on such a level of concentration,

that only a racecar can ask for.

I could hardly speak, only scream!

And the Ferrari? Even if it lost by 5 seconds,

the driving experience of this car is so much more

than the numbers can ever say.

Most importantly, way more than my childhood memories.

Motortrend View:2017 Porsche Macan - Duration: 5:45.

2017 Porsche Macan

2017 Porsche Macan.

If you haven't driven one, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Porsche Macan is not to be taken seriously.

It looks like the result of a 911 and a Cayenne that were fused together in a teleportation accident, it's frequently spotted emerging from underground parking structures in Tribeca, and, you know, it's a four-door hatchback Porsche.

But a few minutes behind the wheel of a Macan will reveal a compact crossover that holds true to almost everything we love about Stuttgart's best exports.

The Macan is quick, agile, and rewarding to drive.

It feels athletic when pushed hard, but it's also comfortable around town.

The steering, brakes, powertrain, and chassis all respond to inputs from the driver in near perfect harmony.

Sure, it's not as immersive a driving experience as in Porsche's classic sports cars.

But it's surprisingly close.

And, yes, it puts the "compact" in compact crossover—don't think you're going to fit two kids and a dog in the back seat—but the Macan is still more than we ever dared to hope for from Porsche's foray into suburban environs.

It's great enough, in fact, that we have previously presented it with one of our 10Best Trucks and SUVs awards.

The Macan family grew by two in 2017, with new models on either end of the lineup.

A new entry-level model features a 252-hp turbocharged 20-liter four-cylinder engine that you can find in multiple Audi products, but otherwise it shares most standard equipment with S models.

The best news about this new model is its starting price: at $48,550 it comes in $6900 less than the Macan S.

This year, Porsche also added the Macan GTS to the top of the Macan lineup (excepting the 400-horsepower Macan Turbo, reviewed separately), which uses a 360-hp version of the twin-turbo V-6 that powers S models.

The GTS comes standard with an air suspension and adaptive dampers, larger front brakes than the Macan S, 20-inch wheels, and several GTS-specific appearance items, including lower doorsill extensions and front and rear seats trimmed with microsuede.

Porsche's new touchscreen infotainment system is now standard in every Macan.

There are also new optional LED headlights, an available heated, microsuede-trimmed steering wheel, and three new exterior colors: Volcano Grey Metallic, Night Blue Metallic, and Carmine Red, the last of which is only available on the Macan GTS.

If it were our driveway, we'd pick the 340-hp twin-turbo V-6 Macan S.

It's quick, fun to drive, and at $55,450, it's the best balance of performance and value in the Macan lineup.

Interior fittings vary only a little from the entry-level Macan to the Macan S to the Macan GTS, so most of the cost bump between models is associated with changes to powertrains and other mechanical equipment.

Standard features in the Macan S include:.

• All-wheel drive• Bixenon dynamic headlights with LED daytime running lights• 70-inch touchscreen infotainment display with 10-speaker audio system.

It's easy to add thousands of dollars to the cost of your Porsche by ticking things such as colored instrument dials ($700), a panoramic roof ($1670), and carbon-fiber lower door trim pieces ($1390) off the options list.

We'd be tempted by the $1060 heated front and rear seats and the $2040 package that adds leather to the dashboard, door panel, and center console, but it's best to exercise restraint when staring down the Macan's order list lest this Porsche be the last thing you can afford to buy.
