Japanese car maker Honda is set to close its Swindon factory in 2022 in a move that will put 3,500 jobs at risk

The firm will announce the closure of its Wiltshire plant tomorrow in a fresh blow to the country's automotive sector amid rife uncertainty surrounding Brexit

The plant is among the biggest employers in Swindon, which voted in favour of leaving the EU, and is currently the firm's only factory inside the EU

Bosses at Honda, Britain's fifth largest car producer, recently declared that the UK crashing out without a deal would cost them 'tens of millions of pounds'

However just six months ago the firm had also insisted it was 'right behind' the Swindon plant and would not move it out of the UK

It is the latest blow to hit Britain's car manufacturing industry, with several international firms threatening to close plants amid Brexit reservations

In December, Nissan announced it would no longer build its X-Trail car at its plant in Sunderland and Jaguar Land Rover recently said it would cut 4,500 UK jobs

Meanwhile, Ford bosses have warned a no-deal Brexit would be 'catastrophic' and would cost them 1,000 jobs - mainly at its Bridgend plant in Wales

Des Quinn, Unite national officer for the automotive sector, Theresa May's 'rigid approach' to negotiations for the 'chaotic Brexit uncertainty'

He added: 'If these reports are confirmed, this would be a shattering body blow at the heart of UK manufacturing

Share this article Share 'The car industry in the UK over the last two decades has been the jewel in the crown for the manufacturing sector - and now it has been brought low by the chaotic Brexit uncertainty created by the rigid approach adopted by Prime Minister Theresa May

'We are seeking urgent clarification from Honda on the implications of these serious reports

' Speaking today, Swindon's Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson insisted the decision was not down to Britain's departure from the EU

The North Swindon MP said: 'Honda's decision to close its Swindon plant by 2022 is 'based on global trends and not Brexit'

The Swindon Honda plant produces around 160,000 Civics, 90 per cent of which are exported to Europe and the US

It has been running for more than 30 years and has been described as 'integral' to the local economy

Local people reacted to the speculation today - included one worker who said he only found out on the news

Dave Shep wrote on Facebook: 'First I've heard and I've worked there for 19 years

'Announced on national news channels before loyal employees told SHOCKING, SHAME ON YOU HONDA

'Dave Durston wrote: 'Oh dear!! If This is true it will be devastating to Swindon employment, it's not just the 3500 that work for Honda, there's at least double that amount that work for subsidiary companies that supply part and materials! However, rumours are just that till confirmed

'Jay Carroll wrote: 'Welcome to Brexit Britain. As a Remainer I take no pleasure whatsoever in being proved right

'Another said: 'This is bloody awful! I hope the Govt wakes up - puts the national interest above ideology and does everything it can to avoid a no-deal Brexit

'Ian Howells, senior vice president for Honda Europe, said in September that the firm was 'right behind' its employees in Swindon

He added: 'The UK forms part of our global network of manufacturing plants, it's not just for the European market

'The only place we produce the vehicle we produce at Swindon is in Swindon itself

So from that point of view it's a very big decision to take a different approach

'Certainly we are right behind our Swindon approach, and really it hasn't come up that we would have to look at putting Swindon somewhere else

'The logistics of moving a factory the size of Swindon would be huge, and as far as we're concerned from a European (perspective), and as far as our Japanese head office is concerned, we're right behind supporting continued production at Swindon and indeed our whole European operation to continue there

'In terms of the impact of Brexit, I think we are looking at hopefully relatively short-term disruption as we get used to the new rules and new ways of doing business

' A spokesman for Honda was not immediately available to comment on the closure of the Swindon plant

The manufacturer is believed to be maintaining its European headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire, and its Formula One operation in the UK

Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said: 'This is devastating news for the thousands of people employed at Honda's plant in Swindon, and a further hammer blow to Britain's reputation as a hub for global business

'Brexit may or may not be officially blamed, and we accept that other issues in the global economy are also a factor

'Brexit uncertainty is weighing on the company, as is the inability of the UK Government to guarantee access to the recent EU-Japan trade deal

'We can still step back from the cliff edge and avoid economic disaster, by giving the public the final say on Brexit with the option to stay in the EU

Honda's 2019 engine 'a thing of beauty,' says Red Bull - Duration: 3:09.

While the Milton Keynes-based outfit has viewed its switch to Honda as a long-term project to deliver the world championship, it is already full of praise about its first tie-up

Red Bull had an encouraging opening day of pre-season testing at Barcelona in Spain, with Max Verstappen completing 128 laps to set the fourth quickest time

"Power is a dominating factor, but I have to say that the installation of this engine into the chassis is probably the best one we have ever had," said team boss Christian Horner

"When you look how neatly integrated it is into the chassis, it really is a thing of beauty

"The whole engineering team collectively with Honda have done a great job in terms of installing what looks like a Swiss clock into the back of our chassis

" Earlier in the day, Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost, whose outfit is also supplied by Red Bull, said he had no doubts that his sister team could win races this year

Asked by Motorsport.com if he shared Tost's optimism, Horner said: "I'm sure Franz is going to be on the podium this year as well! "Look, it's great to have that enthusiasm and optimism that Franz has shown

We're excited to be working with Honda in what is a true partnership, as opposed to a customer-supplier relationship

And we're really already feeling the benefits of that. "It's not going to be a fast process, there's no silver bullet, and I think as the organisations learn more about each other and their strengths and relative weaknesses, it's something that will grow over a period of time

But we're not actually putting any timescale on that." Horner also revealed that the state of readiness that Honda had for the pre-season testing programme was also more advanced than his outfit had experience with Renault in recent years

"We already saw from Toro Rosso last year that great progress was made, and of course our decision was based on what we could see and measure

And I have to say so far, we've been very impressed with everything we've seen. "It's the first time in 12 years that our factory's had four complete engines in it

That's not happened before."

Red Bull will win races with Honda in 2019 - Tost - Duration: 3:02.

Tost, whose team used Honda engines in 2018, has been a huge supporter of Honda since the start of last season, and his views played a part in convincing Red Bull to switch from Renault power for this season

He is now confident that the senior outfit will be very competitive with its new partner

"I am very happy about this," said Tost when asked about Honda's progress. "All the expectations I put into them, they delivered

"And I am quite sure that they will close the gap to the top teams, and that Red Bull will be able to win races with them, and we will also gain a lot of advantages out of this co-operation

" Tost says that Toro Rosso is much better prepared for 2019 after the relatively late decision to use Honda last season inevitably led to some power unit packaging compromises

"Much better I must say. If you look at the car, how the power unit is integrated, then it is a big step forward

"I must say it was a big step from the engineering side as we had much more time, and there was a really good cooperation with Honda and also Red Bull Technology and from this side we are quite well organised

" The Austrian is also confident that there won't be as many power unit element changes this year, Honda having made many for tactical reasons last season as it tried to get developments tested on track

"In 2018 we knew from the very beginning onwards that it is a development process which we have to go through and this is what we did, and in the mean time Honda has reached a very high level on the reliability side as well as the performance side, and I don't expect that we will have so many additional engine changes this year

"First of all, we calculate with three power units, and the rest we will see." Asked if he was generally more confident in Honda than a year ago, he added: "You know there are 12 months in between, and as I said before in 2018 we knew from the beginning onwards it will become difficult

"But now we are in the year 2019 and we want to see now the fruits of this hard work in last year, which both parties did

And therefore I expect a successful season for Toro Rosso as well as for Honda."

THE SHADOW IS FINALLY DRIVABLE!- Honda Build Ep2 - Duration: 43:55.

okey-dokey so welcome to Milo&Marcus garage

today we start off with a wee motovlog mostly because I just want to test the

camera on the helmet mount and also cuz it's a

really fun way to record stuff I think so

what we'll be doing today is

work on the main intake manifolds we ordered all

the new ones so that's really good so we are going to be mounting them on

today

sorry for my shitty break changing but this is the first time I've been riding

this season it's been a while got a bit rusty you know

so yeah

basically

this is the first time for me with the this camera on the bike

and this is my first ride of the season which is absolutely great the weather

is getting nice it's up to like like seven or eight degrees Celsius right now

which is great for Norway at this time of year

so I believe that the biker season is going to come early this year which is

wonderful I think although it is still a wee bit cold

and the traction is well not that great but you know it's dry well meaby it's not

dry but it's not raining which is a

very nice in these parts of Norway got some sun shining through

which is also fantastic

I'm riding this daelim daystar 125

I've owned it for a bit more than a year now

I absolutely love it this is my first bike

and it's great it's a 1 2 5 cc engine because you know we are eurobros so

none of that heavy stuff right now unfortunately I'll be upgrading in a

year or so to A2 and then you know A so right now it's

weather is wonderful and you know the bike is handling very

nice I'm gonna be pimping it up this spring

I bought a driver sissy bar for it which I'm gonna be installing

which is great because honestly this bikes this bike needs a sissy bar for

the driver it really does and oh well

I'm going to be doing some minor rust removal and stuff like that

and driving a lot hopefully because the last season I only drove for a month

because I started out very late because of you know my license and stuff

and well this season I'm going to drive the

hell out of it

say that the great you know wonderful Norwegian conditions

my tiny engine gurgling cruiser touring together around Norway lots of fun stuff

so I would like you guys to tell me what do you think of the motovlogging part

the fuck was that that was weird so that might look the hell that's not good

oh shit what's going on

that's definitely not good Fuck

I don't like this

I what the fuck is going on okay we got a problem fuck it

I'm gonna drive to our garage nice and easy oh fucking hell

my speedometer just died yeah hey

although it is it

No yeah it just died

oh shit

well that it's definitely something we need to fix because right now I've got

no fucking clue how fast I'm going well okay so this zone is going to be

slightly different than I originally thought

so today we are going to be fixing my bike in addition to working on our

classic Honda Shadow build

it's wonderful it's absolutely wonderful you know got some people walking by

got some people that I know

but shit that's not working that is not good I think something just loosened

that little because it was working just fine

when I when I strated driving so that

is bad ya see that that's my speedometer cable yeah I think

it looks it's dangling shit I hope I didn't lose a screw fuck

okay nice and slow

yeah that's definitely loose yeah we are gonna be fixing that in a wee bit

because I cannot drive with that that's just sucks I don't like

that at all

Hey hello let's go right

yeah that's that's a problem but oh well we are fortunately driving to a bike

garage so I think this is the best time this could have happened so I actually

don't mind that much I'm not scared at all actually because this road is

practically unused and I'm not driving fast I think

and I'll be fine

just gonna live it through

and hopefully it didn't lose any screws because if I did I might be a

problem if I know it might be a speed bump

yeah we are driving slow definitely around 30 because these are meant for 30

and

yeah we're good we're good but oh well this is so far this has never happened

to me before but it's kind of interesting because you

know I actually I have not touched the speedometer in almost a year

and it was working just fine so I don't know what happened I quess the cold got into

it and the this screw had got small a bit it's a dog

hello that dog let's is that Marcus's dog

hey doggo

Hey what you doing here going for a walk oh you're now chasing me

oh well that's Marcus's dog yeah well we are living in

in a village so it's kind of okay I get well that's not particularly safe I mean

if a car would be here might have ended slightly different but oh well

well

the trip ended for now and I'll jump you over to the normal cameras hi thought

again as you've previously seen the biker season starts it and so have we

so we've been working hard on our Honda Shadow and by the way I did fix that

speedometer gage thing with my bike apparently it was just that the

speedometer cable got loose and it came out of the gage so just screw back in I

didn't bother to record because it was way too boring but well a previously

we've been working a lot with the master brake cylinder that's the little shit

that's it and well it's it was broken and also

after we put it in diesel it got dissolved even more so we'll check the

prices on a new master cylinder yeah just this little part which is the

actual cylinder parks which was like if you know something repaired kit stuff

and it was around 150 kroner yeah around that so this was 150 kroner just for

this part and then the price for the whole thing as in the both the lever and

the the mechanism and the holder everything the whole thing II was a hard

corner of course not om because it's expensive with OEM but still functional

and and okay to use was a hundred kroner with shipping but that's about

15 bucks for the whole thing it's cheap it's dirt cheap so we just ordered that brand

new and so we'll just gave up on this and order the new and it it's gonna come

and well we don't really know when but it's gonna come and so what we've done

today without recording in sorry for that but it was just too hard to record

and work at the same time we well we put on the brand new intake

manifolds and we well we put everything back together with the new intake

manifolds I'm gonna start it now everything except the air filter because

we want to check if it even starts right now because and if it starts tiring I

put on the other yeah filter and so yeah now are you gonna see well how we start

the bike okay guys so we're gonna be something now

okay guys sure what we've got here is that it starts

just fine actually it sounds quite nice and we think the unfilter long because

it limits here as well a little bit and you know it gets harder for you forgot

for the carp to suck the air and and that might help a little and then if

that does not help we are taking a we spend on a bike after we've been

adjusting it for a while and this is without choke

that's fucking brilliant

loved a star

welcome back what you just saw was a long conversation we need Marcus and his

brother about what to do with his bike next and also trying to ride it a wee

bit and check the changing of the main intake manifolds help at all and I must

say it is absolutely amazing the bike runs pretty good in comparison to how it

did last time and there is just some teeny tiny bit of adjustment that needs

to be done but also in addition to that we have to put back the air filter so

that is what I'm gonna be doing now Marcus it has drawn me to take a break

he'll be back pretty soon and for you guys see you sooner and I while he's

eating we'll put the air filter on and then should in theory be able do a wee

trip which this time I will be recording if the trip happens of course let's go a

tank must go off open my fantastic set of tools great thanks to my grandfather

who got me this wonderful set of he talks for my moods day and yes name day

is a thing and Europe and Eastern Europe yes

top petanque you know some people

in immaculate listening to all that madness or movie that's well she looks

nice if you really going if you best mouth poor yeah papa

that's nice screw it so you waiting all right through their toll go enter mo

screw you screw it

okay guys so this is after a whole day of work that's the Honda bike that's me

or my own bike

so here we are gonna go for a wee trip

to check if it's better now there was last statement obviously is let's go

so it looks like the books at the back sunning same

in order to running without licenses do that please

we only do it because well we've been

in a village where a police car is as rare as a fine tick

looks like looks like the bikes on a pretty good I am very good luck

very happy honestly

although we haven't fixed everything up yet

looks like it's draggable that's bloody fantastic

sorry looking a little custom

okay guys so it seems that we fixed the parachute which is amazing

yeah the blacks keeping up with me hell yeah it's closing in guys we did it

we fix the fucking break

very so amazing I am sure glad at this point we've been

working on this for three months now there is a long way in head butts

we are one step closer to being done getting the plates on and being able to

drag this thing we're gonna go for our classic classic

sit down there

we do it every time we go fix it for tests right yeah we call this terrain

training where the bikes gonna well properly

put our feet down get it nice and easy because there's lots of loose gravel in

here

that's really good that's really literally good

you see it's it's really slippery

I'm gonna turn back there we don't really want to drive it too much mostly

because it doesn't have plates on

but Hale yeah come on guys we've got a functioning Baker thank God

you can you stand that area

efficient and effective and productive day we've ever done

I mean we start out with the bike being slow

and you know not working and well we start out and dead conditioned the three

months ago but now it's solid rainbow when I when I drove it it has plenty of

paralytic and you know I would say even make more more trick than my bike scope

because it really when it gets them but when you really you know push it a bit

Subaru Forester v Honda CR-V 2019 Comparison - Duration: 5:22.

Settle or stretch?  When growing families are in the market for a medium SUV up to about $30,000, the dilemma that always arises is the question of value versus priorities

Will the buyer settle for a car that comes close enough to the purchasing criteria while remaining under budget? Or is it worth the financial stretch of an extra two or three grand for a vehicle that has everything the buyer demands? The Honda CR-V Vi and the Subaru Forester 2

5i present a unique opportunity to find out how this sort of dilemma plays out in reality

Why are we comparing them?  Relatively new to the market, the Honda CR-V Vi is the most affordable variant in the range – and its performance takes a hit to match the lower price

Honda has chosen a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine in lieu of the 1.5-litre turbo unit powering other variants in the CR-V range

If you like the Honda CR-V and don't care about straight-line acceleration, the CR-V Vi is an attractive proposition at just $28,290

Its nemesis for this comparison is the basic Subaru Forester 2.5i, which is mechanically identical to most variants in the range

Priced at $33,490, the Forester in this trim level is positioned $5200 higher than the CR-V Vi, and also exceeds that $30,000 threshold that may be the budget ceiling for many buyers

Can the Forester peg back that shortcoming with extra features – and are those features key to the Subaru's appeal? It's not enough to load up the Forester with $5200 worth of headlight protectors, floor mats and mud flaps

The Subaru has to be more convincing than that. Who will they appeal to?  One aspect of these vehicles (medium SUVs in general, as a matter of fact) that strikes the right note is the generous rear-seat accommodation

For a family comprising two parents and two kids, a medium SUV will be comfortable and spacious enough for both kids right through to adulthood

Beyond that, the CR-V will draw in buyers familiar with the badge, buyers who know and respect Honda's reputation for reliability, safety and low running costs

The Forester – along with other Subaru models – has raised the stakes recently with advanced safety technology complementing its well-established longitudinal all-wheel drive traction

Buyers will gravitate to the Forester for its innovation and its practicality. How much do they cost?  In an unusual convergence of events, the two cars tested here cost no more with metallic paint

That's because you can't specify flat paint for the CR-V (so the 'cost' is built into the price) and Subaru abides by a policy of not charging extra for cars with metallic paint

That means that the Honda costs $28,290 with no options fitted, and the Subaru costs $33,490, also with no options fitted

Both cars offer five-year warranties with unlimited-kilometre coverage, and neither car needs to be serviced more than once a year, although if you rack up a lot of kilometres, the Honda will have to be serviced sooner than the Forester – 10,000km versus 12,500km for the Subaru

Combined-cycle fuel consumption is 7.6L/100km for the CR-V with this engine, and 7

4L/100km for the Forester. In urban running the official figures are 10L/100km (CR-V) and 9

3L/100km (Forester). Both cars return the same highway figure of 6.3L/100km. In reality, we found the CR-V to be consistently more economical than the Forester, which is hardly a surprise from a vehicle with fewer drivetrain components and a smaller-displacement engine

What do they do well?  Both vehicles are roomy, quiet and easy to drive. At a steady speed of 60km/h on a section of coarse-chip bitumen, road noise was equally subdued for both cars, but audible at a higher pitch in the Honda

At open road speeds noise from both powertrains was suppressed very well in the cabin

There are adjustable vents for the rear-seat passengers and adults of average height will sit comfortably back there, with plenty of headroom and legroom available

While these two cars are easy to load, the Honda's floor is lower than the Subaru's, and there's more space, measured up to the window line of the CR-V's boot, but the Forester's tailgate aperture is wider for loading bulkier items

At a volume of 522 litres of boot space the Honda has the edge, but the Subaru is not far behind at 498 litres – a decent figure for a four-wheel drive wagon of this size

Importantly, for vehicles like these, the Honda's tailgate is light to lift, and each car comes with its own full-size spare on a matching alloy rim

The pair are not only easy to drive – with the Forester a particular stand-out for its field of vision – but they were surprisingly safe and secure, in dynamic terms

While the CR-V offers marginally better road-holding and body control on dry bitumen, the Forester is certainly in the same ballpark and its ride/handling balance is better than its rival's

Of the two, the Forester delivers spritely performance in a straight line – with exploitable torque on hand across the rev range – but as mentioned above, the CR-V is more economical in terms of fuel use

The Honda has a large, practical cubby hole and removable tray in the centre console for storing knick-knacks, and its seats are very comfortable and well-shaped for longer trips

The Forester has a lot of safety equipment, such as the Eyesight suite, which is very sophisticated and 'alerts' the driver with gentle but persistent chimes rather than bowel-loosening alarms and flashing lights

Also included in the suite is a forward-facing left front camera that is genuinely useful when parking

The Subaru is equipped with excellent headlights that are adaptive to light up the inside of corners at night

Additionally, the Subaru offers the comfort of climate control and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and the convenience of USB ports for the rear-seat occupants

What could they do better?  At full throttle the Forester's continuously variable transmission shrieks like a banshee

Honda's transmission, also a CVT, isn't as well calibrated for the naturally-aspirated four-cylinder in the CR-V and needs its sport mode (and in extreme situations the 'low' mode) to optimise performance

On occasion the Honda CVT was jerky and inclined to hunt for the right ratio in hilly country

For all its refinement – zero vibration at idle – and its sporty exhaust note, the CR-V engine feels lethargic at low revs and there's a small but distinct gain in performance at around 4000rpm and higher, which is where most drivers won't want the engine revving in a family-oriented SUV

Even then, the CR-V in this variant cannot keep up with the base-spec Forester.  From the start, the CR-V presented as a downmarket rival to the Forester, with little things like the smaller infotainment screen and the monochromatic instrumentation detracting from the overall ambience

The fuel gauge uses a digitised bar-graph format, rather than a straightforward needle to show at a glance how low the fuel level is

In other ways too, such as lack of acoustic guidance, the absence of a starter button and the clunky shift lever, the CR-V was playing second fiddle to the Forester, and particularly on hotter days, when the Honda's manual air conditioning struggled maintaining a cool cabin temperature once the temperature rose above 30 degrees

Both cars featured a three-point seatbelt for the centre/rear position, with belt and buckles retracting into the headlining when not in use

It's less convenient than an anchorage point behind the rear seat. The CR-V's headlights are dim and yellowy, also lacking the adaptive (active cornering) facility of the Forester's lights

Which wins, and why?  An incident near the end of the week placed these two vehicles in perspective

Rounding a right-hand bend late at night I noted an adult kangaroo on the road, standing stock still

It was occupying a spot on the centre lines, right at the apex – and just 40 metres away

No damage was done. I brought the vehicle safely to a halt in plenty of time, honked the horn twice and Skippy hopped off the road

I was driving the CR-V at the time. If I had been in the Forester, with its brighter, adaptive headlights, I would have seen the roo a lot earlier

And that was the decider. For the $5200 extra, the Subaru easily justifies its higher price tag with safety gear that works, with an engine that performs and with standard comfort and convenience features that the family will welcome

Japanese car maker Honda 'is to close its Swindon plant in 2022 - with the loss of 3,500 jobs' - Duration: 4:31.

Japanese car maker Honda is set to close its Swindon factory in 2022, putting 3,500 jobs at risk, it was claimed today

Honda, Britain's fifth largest car producer, will announce the closure of its Wiltshire plant tomorrow according to Sky News

The Swindon Honda branch employs 3,500 workers and is currently the firm's only factory inside the EU

Closure claims come after Honda Europe bosses said the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal would cost them 'tens of millions of pounds', but last year insisted they were 'right behind' the Swindon plant and would not move it out of the UK after Brexit

Honda will retain its European headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire, and its Formula One operation in the UK, it was reported today

The car manufacturing industry has taken several hits since Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016

Last year Nissan announced it would no longer build its X-Trail car at its plant in Sunderland and Jaguar Land Rover recently said it would cut 4,500 UK jobs

Ford bosses have warned a no deal Brexit would be 'catastrophic' and would cost them 1,000 jobs - mainly at its Bridgend plant in Wales

Local Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson insisted the decision is not down to Brexit

The North Swindon MP said: Honda's decision to close its Swindon plant by 2022 is "based on global trends and not Brexit

' The Swindon Honda plant produces around 160,000 Civics, 90 per cent of which are exported to Europe and the US

It has been running for more than 30 years and is integral to the local economy.Ian Howells, senior vice president for Honda Europe, said last September: 'The UK forms part of our global network of manufacturing plants, it's not just for the European market

'The only place we produce the vehicle we produce at Swindon is in Swindon itself

So from that point of view it's a very big decision to take a different approach.'Certainly we are right behind our Swindon approach, and really it hasn't come up that we would have to look at putting Swindon somewhere else

Ricciardo: Staying at Red Bull Honda was riskier option - Duration: 3:36.

Ricciardo's shock Red Bull departure was the one of the biggest stories of last season as he opted to join the Renault works team despite enduring reliability problems with the French manufacturer

Renault has swiftly improved since returning to F1 as a team in 2016, finishing fourth in the constructors' championship last year, but Ricciardo is still unlikely to challenge his former team or Mercedes and Ferrari for victories this season

"There is a bit of a gamble with it but the more I think about it I don't see it too much as a gamble in terms of [comparison] with Red Bull," said Ricciardo

"We're not coming in the team saying we're going to win, so the expectation and the bar is not initially very high, whereas at Red Bull every year we kind of built ourselves up because we'd won in the past

"Every year you kind of feel it's going to happen and the risk is being let down every year

I feel like the risk of failure [staying at Red Bull] is greater than coming here and having the risk of not winning, if that makes sense

"Out of the two options they both have some risk, but with risk comes reward and because the growth here is potentially a lot bigger I feel that the reward can certainly be bigger here and the ability to become less frustrated is better here

" After committing to Renault, Ricciardo went on to endure a torrid reliability record over the second half of 2018

However, he says it did not give him any "second thoughts" about his decision as he believes Red Bull was responsible for some of the problems and Honda is still not a proven alternative

"I feel a lot of the failures were pretty 50/50," Ricciardo said. "I think Austin was a Renault failure and the week after at Mexico was a Red Bull failure

"But no, I didn't really have second thoughts and again there were a lot of unknowns with Honda as well

"It was tough because on one hand Honda is new hope for the team, but it's also an unknown in many respects

"Renault still haven't got to where they want to be from a power unit point of view and since 2014 they've been really trying to play catch up

You can't deny that every mistake they do make they are going to learn from that

"I'm sure there's still probably going to be some mistakes that they'll make but I feel like they're ticking them off, and I feel that probably Honda still has more of those things to tick off

"
