Honda 'to close its Swindon plant with the loss of 3,500 jobs' - Duration: 15:10.

Japanese car maker Honda is set to close its Swindon factory in 2022 in a move that will put 3,500 jobs at risk

The firm will announce the closure of its Wiltshire plant tomorrow in a fresh blow to the country's automotive sector amid rife uncertainty surrounding Brexit

Trade union Unite blamed the potential job losses on Theresa May's 'rigid approach' to negotiations with EU, claiming the threat of no deal had led to 'chaotic Brexit uncertainty'

The plant is among the biggest employers in Swindon, which voted in favour of leaving the EU, and is currently the firm's only factory inside the EU

It is the latest blow to hit Britain's car manufacturing industry, with several international firms threatening to close plants amid Brexit reservations

In December, Nissan announced it would no longer build its X-Trail car at its plant in Sunderland and Jaguar Land Rover recently said it would cut 4,500 UK jobs

Meanwhile, Ford bosses have warned a no-deal Brexit would be 'catastrophic' and would cost them 1,000 jobs - mainly at its Bridgend plant in Wales

Scroll down for video  Bosses at Honda, Britain's fifth largest car producer, recently declared that the UK crashing out without a deal would cost them 'tens of millions of pounds'

However just six months ago the firm had also insisted it was 'right behind' the Swindon plant and would not move it out of the UK

British intelligence chiefs say Huawei SHOULD be allowed to. Share this article Share Des Quinn, Unite national officer for the automotive sector said: 'If these reports are confirmed, this would be a shattering body blow at the heart of UK manufacturing

'The car industry in the UK over the last two decades has been the jewel in the crown for the manufacturing sector - and now it has been brought low by the chaotic Brexit uncertainty created by the rigid approach adopted by Prime Minister Theresa May

'We are seeking urgent clarification from Honda on the implications of these serious reports

' Speaking today, Swindon's Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson insisted the decision was not down to Britain's departure from the EU

The North Swindon MP said: 'Honda's decision to close its Swindon plant by 2022 is 'based on global trends and not Brexit'

The Swindon Honda plant produces around 160,000 Civics, 90 per cent of which are exported to Europe and the US

It has been running for more than 30 years and has been described as 'integral' to the local economy

South Swindon Labour tweeted: 'Terrible news for the town and the Honda workforce

Many people work at Honda and live in Gloucestershire. When are the Brexiteers going to wake up to the reality they have created for the country? #Honda'Local people reacted to the speculation today - included one worker who said he only found out on the news

'Jay Carroll wrote: 'Welcome to Brexit Britain. As a Remainer I take no pleasure whatsoever in being proved right

'Another said: 'This is bloody awful! I hope the Govt wakes up - puts the national interest above ideology and does everything it can to avoid a no-deal Brexit

' Ian Howells, senior vice president for Honda Europe, said in September that the firm was 'right behind' its employees in Swindon

He added: 'The UK forms part of our global network of manufacturing plants, it's not just for the European market

'The only place we produce the vehicle we produce at Swindon is in Swindon itself

So from that point of view it's a very big decision to take a different approach

'Certainly we are right behind our Swindon approach, and really it hasn't come up that we would have to look at putting Swindon somewhere else

'The logistics of moving a factory the size of Swindon would be huge, and as far as we're concerned from a European (perspective), and as far as our Japanese head office is concerned, we're right behind supporting continued production at Swindon and indeed our whole European operation to continue there

'In terms of the impact of Brexit, I think we are looking at hopefully relatively short-term disruption as we get used to the new rules and new ways of doing business

' A spokesman for Honda was not immediately available to comment on the closure of the Swindon plant

The manufacturer is believed to be maintaining its European headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire, and its Formula One operation in the UK

Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said: 'This is devastating news for the thousands of people employed at Honda's plant in Swindon, and a further hammer blow to Britain's reputation as a hub for global business

'Brexit may or may not be officially blamed, and we accept that other issues in the global economy are also a factor

'Brexit uncertainty is weighing on the company, as is the inability of the UK Government to guarantee access to the recent EU-Japan trade deal

'We can still step back from the cliff edge and avoid economic disaster, by giving the public the final say on Brexit with the option to stay in the EU

'Today's news is yet another hit for manufacturers in Britain. Last week, Airbus announced it was scrapping the world's largest commercial jet, putting up to 3,500 jobs at risk over the next three years

About 200 people face job uncertainty in Britain, with thousands more across the world as the aircraft is phased out by 2021

The move comes just 12 years after the double-decker superjet first took to the skies as the UK's challenger to US company Boeing

The A380 model has never turned a profit and sales have slowed dramatically as airlines favour smaller, more nimble aircraft - and Boeing's 787 Dreamliner enjoyed greater success

Critics of the A380 argue the double-deckers are too large, leaving airlines with an impossible task of filling seats for commercial flights

Entire industry has stalled - and No Deal fears aren't helpingCommentary by Ruth Sunderland, Business Editor for the Daily MailHonda's decision to shut down its plant in Swindon after 30 years as a major local employer may not be directly motivated by Brexit but by wider problems in global car manufacturing

However, yesterday's move by the Japanese carmaker could hardly have come at a worse time

No one in the industry doubts that uncertainty over Brexit is having a chilling effect on production

Fears surrounding our departure helped to halve fresh investment in the sector last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders

Overseas investors such as Honda have, in the past three decades, rebuilt the British car industry after it was driven to the brink of annihilation in the 1970s by rabid trade union activity

Now they are in flight.Nissan is cancelling plans to build its new X-Trail SUV at its Sunderland factory

US giant Ford, which employs 13,000 workers in Britain, describes the potential consequences of No Deal as 'catastrophic', while the boss of Jaguar Land Rover, which is cutting UK jobs, has issued a string of dire warnings

Brexiteers will, of course, accuse these firms of crying wolf. Maybe – but that doesn't mean there are no wolves out there

And it is a tragedy that the very companies which helped to bring about a remarkable renaissance in the British car industry have become the collateral damage in the chaos of our impending departure from the EU

It is yet one more problem to contend with in a troubled industry that faces plummeting demand for diesel cars, a slump in the vast Chinese market, and fears that Donald Trump may impose punishing tariffs on vehicles imported into the US

In Germany, a country synonymous with the production of sleek, super-reliable driving machines sold worldwide, the decline in the auto industry is actually stalling the economy

The industry is also dealing with the lifestyle choices of the Uber generation: city-dwelling, environmentally-conscious young people who are less fixated on car ownership than their parents were

So a state of emergency would prevail even without Brexit, and the threat of No Deal makes us an even less attractive place to invest in troubled times

Honda plant announcement & automotive investment - Duration: 1:33.

Mark Pawsey

Mr. Speaker a year ago the BEIS Select committee visited the Honda

plant at Swindon and we saw Civics coming off the line, many destined for

the European market and we saw the benefits of the very substantial

overseas investment that's taken place

in our auto industry some of which has been to the benefit of my constituency

through the London Electric Vehicle Company and the investment which reached,

in its peak year, of 2013 £588 million.

Are there any decisions that the Secretary of State would suggest this house might take in the next few

days which would encourage future investment to get back to those kind of levels?

The context of technological change is something that

is common to the motor industry around the world but as I I hope have been

clear we have the opportunity to be a beneficiary of that change. And because

we can't be complacent at how competitive the sector is around the

world we must do everything we can to give confidence to investors and that

certainly involves over the next few days agreeing a deal that then can

unleash I think the the optimism that comes from our investments up and down

the country that I know in many instances is not taking place while

people contemplate what our future trading relationship will be.

Honda WSBK gains likely to 'take time', warns Camier - Duration: 4:00.

Honda, which revealed its 2019 livery ahead of the start of the test on Sunday, joined the WSBK field for the first time in Phillip Island, having skipped the previous winter tests in Jerez and Portimao in favour of conducting its own private programme on Asian circuits instead

Camier concluded the first day of the test 11th on the timesheets, some 1.7 seconds off the pace of Ducati rider Alvaro Bautista, and narrowed the deficit to 1

1s on the second day, despite slipping to 13th place. Ryuichi Kiyonari meanwhile ended up 15th on Tuesday, a little over four tenths behind teammate Camier

Honda split with long-time WSBK partner team Ten Kate Racing over the winter, forging a new alliance with the Japan-based Moriwaki Racing team as well as the Althea Racing squad for its first proper factory entry in the production-based series since 2002

Camier, who has stayed with Honda during that transition, said he was encouraged by the performance of the CBR1000RR at Phillip Island but cautioned that the revamped machine's set-up is likely to take some time to hone fully

"We are working really hard on different aspects of the bike, from the electronics to the chassis set-up," he said

"The feeling on the bike is not at all bad but we need to keep working hard on the set-up

"It's important to work methodically because we want to be sure that every change we make is taking us in the right direction

"The bike has a lot of strong points and is very nice to ride, very stable. The team is working really hard and I'm sure things will improve, though it may take a little time

" Three-time British Superbike champion Kiyonari, 36, is returning to WSBK this year for the first time since 2009, having plied his trade in the All-Japan Superbike Championship in recent seasons

Like Camier, Kiyonari was able to improve his best laptime by more than a second on Tuesday compared to the benchmark he had set on the first day in Phillip Island

"Today I feel better compared to yesterday," commented the Japanese rider. "This morning especially, we worked well on the suspension and electronic settings and I immediately had better feeling

"Of course, we are still a bit far from the front, but all in all I'm happy with the progress we've made

"During the afternoon session, we had some grip issues to deal with but in the end, we were able to sort that out, even if we did not improve on the morning's best time

"I'm highly motivated to improve and know that I am asking a lot of my team, so I wish to thank everyone for their effort and all their hard work

"

Honda to close Swindon car plant by 2021 - Duration: 1:38.

Japanese carmaker Honda has confirmed it's closing its car plant the southern English

town of Swindon by 2021 - a move likely to affect about three and a half thousand jobs.

For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram…

Aram…

A huge blow to Britain's auto industry….

That's right Mark…

Honda's Swindon plant is the firm's only car factory in the EU and builds around 160,000

Honda Civics per year.

About 90 percent of them are exported to the EU and the U.S.

The move will not only threaten three and a half thousand jobs at the plant, but also

a similar number of workers in the supply chain.

Honda's CEO Takahiro Hachigo announced the move on Tuesday, saying it was due to global

changes in the car industry, adding it had nothing to do with Brexit.

"This decision is aimed at optimising our global production bases and their ability

and to accelerate our shift to the electrical vehicle.

The timing of this announcement came as we decided on our production bases.

So, this is not related to Brexit."

However, industry experts say Brexit must have been a factor in Honda's decision because

the merit of having easy access to the lucrative European market would disappear after the

UK leaves the EU.

The timing of the announcement also comes as the British government struggles to finalize

a divorce deal.

Honda: Compact engine design has not hurt performance - Duration: 2:45.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said on Monday that the installation of the Honda engine was the best his outfit had ever experienced, as he labelled the power unit a "thing of beauty"

But while previous experience of an extreme compact design hurt Honda's progress in its first year with McLaren, the Japanese manufacturer is adamant that its new approach will not hurt its performance

"I think we are in neutral," said Honda's F1 technical director Toyoharu Tanabe about the trade-off between performance and packaging

"The PU performance or total package performance we discussed very much with both teams

We compromised [to work out] which is better. "If you have more power, more performance one way, but the chassis side is deficit, what is the best compromise? So then we decide the best package performance

" Tanabe said the push for a more compact design was instigated by Red Bull Technology, with the knowledge shared with both Red Bull and Toro Rosso

"Red Bull Technology discussed this between the teams and that makes our job very simple," he said

"The aim is to make it compact and nice. That is what we have done during this off season

" Tanabe was also confident that Honda had made progress on the reliability front this year, having stuck with the same concept as 2018

"We carry over the concept from last year, which means the concept from 2017," he said

"One of the reasons is the PU regulations does not change this year, so we have kept working on our PU

"We improved our performance and reliability for this year. It means it [the engine] is not new but updated

"

Honda Plans To Close Its UK Swindon Factory, Says Report - Duration: 2:13.

Honda is getting ready to announce the closure of its Swindon manufacturing facility in the UK, according to a report from Sky News

The news site says that the Japanese automaker plans to shut down the British factory in 2022, putting 3,500 jobs at risk

Honda may make an official announcement tomorrow, Tuesday February 19.If true, Honda's decision to close Swindon will be a huge blow to UK's automotive industry, as it accounts for around 10 percent of the country's total output of 1.52 million vehicles

What does the plant make? Honda's Swindon factory is currently producing the Civic hatchback for the global market, including the US

Factors like the uncertainty over Brexit, the US government's threat of import tariffs for European cars and the new agreement between Japan and EU over the withdrawal of tariffs on Japan-made vehicles give the automaker plenty of reasons to consider such an option

The report appears to be confirmed by local MP Justin Tomlinson, who tweeted that Honda's decision is not based on Brexit but rather on global trends, adding that no job losses or changes in production are expected until 2021

According to a source close to Honda, the company will retain its European headquarters in Bracknell, UK, as well as its F1 operations

Honda's UK manufacturing facility used to produce models like the Euro-spec Accord, Jazz (Fit in the US), CR-V, as well as the Civic, but the company has since moved production of these models outside the UK, leaving only the Civic hatchback

Last month, Honda said that they would shut down the Swindon factory for six days in April in order to prepare for any possible disruptions that may arise from the country's leaving the European Union

Former Supercars driver confirms Honda TCR Australia deal - Duration: 3:00.

The Sydney-based team, run by former Supercars full-timer David Wall, kick-started a relationship with Honda's homologation partner J

A.S Motorsport by taking delivery of the first Civic that arrived in Australia late last year

However at that time there was no official deal between J.A.S and Wall Racing, the Italian team still looking to secure an official customer team down under

That's now changed, with Wall Racing securing the local Honda rights as well as ordering a second brand new Civic to be delivered ahead of the first round in May

According to Wall, the plan is to run at least the two cars, and as many as five if the demand is there

"We're pleased to have secured a second Honda Civic Type R for the 2019 TCR Australia Series," said Wall

"It is an exciting new championship to Australia and we are getting closer to locking down drivers to fill the seats

"At the moment, we'll start the season by running two cars ourselves, but we have the capabilities of running up to five, so we'll just see what the interest levels are like in the coming weeks

"We're happy to run multiple cars and service other Hondas at the events. They don't have to be run by our team

We are being very flexible with our customers." Wall is expected to race one of the cars himself, and says he could try and find other professional drivers to join the squad

"I'm working on getting some professional drivers in the cars. I feel that it is important to have a strong line-up of drivers, but we're also open to amateur racers too

"The category is user-friendly and cost-effective, and now with the TV deal on SBS in place, there's even more reason to compete

" TCR Australia is expected to announce the appointment of a dedicated category manager as soon as tomorrow

Honda closure CAN be linked to Brexit say MPs - despite Honda insisting it's not - News Live - Duration: 6:04.

MPs have lined up to claim Honda's bombshell plant closure can be linked to Brexit - despite the car giant insisting it's not

The automotive giant announced it will shut its 34-year-old Swindon factory in 2021 and move production to Japan in a blow to 3,500 jobs

Speaking this morning, Honda's senior vice-president Ian Howell said flatly: "This is not a Brexit-related decision for us

"  But a move that risks enraging Tory Brexiteers, Business Secretary Greg Clark claimed the decision "demonstrates starkly how much is at stake"

And in an urgent debate in the House of Commons today, MPs repeatedly drew comparisons between the huge blow and the chaos over leaving the EU

Their pointed out Japan has signed a trade deal with the EU which will allow tariff-free trade - while our tariffs after March 29 are still unknown

Pro-EU minister Mr Clark also pointed out the "devastating" decision came after long warnings about the impact of No Deal Brexit

Mr Clark, who confronted Theresa May yesterday demanding she rule out a no-deal Brexit, said at a conference this lunchtime: "Decisions like Honda's this morning demonstrate starkly how much is at stake

"  And he later told MPs: "The company said the decision was not about Brexit and clearly we must accept that

"In truth they have a small market share in Europe compared to the markets they said they are expanding in

"But I've always been very clear that the motor industry, Japanese investors, and Honda in particular have been very clear for many months that Brexit is an additional worry at a difficult time

"If there's one message all of us in this House can give that they want to hear it is that the deal should be ratified

"  He added: "Although it's the case that the Brexit uncertainty was not cited as being one of the factors in the decision, it is evidence that the whole industry and investment decisions… this does bear on their mind

"  As MPs lined up to attack the government, Remainer after Remainer demanded the government now rule out leaving without a deal in 38 days' time

Tory MP Ken Clarke said: "It's no good people ignoring the warnings of every leader of the car industry

"  Ex-minister Michael Fallon said: "One of the lessons here is the power and scope of the EU-Japan trade agreement

"In contrast to the continuing uncertainty here, two and a half years after the referendum… as to what the future terms of our trading relationship Europe are actually going to be

"  Hilary Benn, chairman of the Commons Brexit committee, said it came at a "dangerous moment" for the future of the car industry - and the government must be persuaded "what a disaster [No Deal] would be for the future of British car manufacturing

"   And Labour MP Richard Burden said Brexit "is an absolutely key part of the context in which Honda and other major car manufacturers are making decisions about where to invest and the generations of vehicles that will transform this industry

"And the harsh reality is Britain's reputation as a stable place to do business and a gateway to Europe is being undermined before our eyes

"   Jeremy Corbyn denied a link to Brexit at a conference this afternoon.  He said: "Although not directly linked to Brexit today we learn that Honda is planning to close its plant in Swindon at the cost of 3,500 jobs

"That is devastating news for those workers, their families and for the local economy

It's bad news too for all the small and medium sized businesses in the supply chain

"  But Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey went further - saying there was "no doubt" Tory Brexit plans were having an impact on the industry

She told MPs: "The government is completely incompetent.  "Honda's decision is a damning indictment of this government's failure to support car manufacturing and ensure business confidence - both in terms of Brexit, and in terms of their so called industrial strategy

"I understand that Honda's CEO this morning said the decision was unrelated to Brexit

"However, the company statement specifically says they want to focus activity in regions where it expects to have high production volumes, especially in electric vehicles

"So the question logically follows - why does Honda no longer believe the UK will have high production volumes?  "And why do they no longer have confidence to invest here to make it so?  "They will be exporting from Japan to the EU instead of from Britain

"  She added: "Something must have changed.  "Could it be the government's botched Brexit causing chaos and uncertainty and undermining business confidence?"  And she went on: "Honda itself warned last year that leaving the EU without a deal would cost the company tens of millions

"So there can be no doubt this government's reckless threats of no deal and prolonged uncertainty is having an impact on business decisions in the here and now - even if that isn't the top line of a press release

"  Mr Clark told MPs a task force is being set up to ensure workers in Swindon can make the best use of their skills after the closure

It will include local MPs, business leaders and the trade unions to ensure the skills and expertise of the workforce are maintained

Theresa May told the weekly meeting of the Cabinet that she had spoken to the president of Honda to express her "disappointment" at the decision to close the Swindon plant

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said she told the meeting that the Government would be doing "all we can" to support those affected
