Kalamazoo Lively Arts - The Suzuki Academy of Kalamazoo - Duration: 7:08.- What's your name, and what do you play?
- I'm Caroline,
and I play the wonderful violin.
- Why is it wonderful?
- It has a wonderful sound,
and when you're playing it, you can connect to...
Like, connect to the world.
- Tell me how it works.
- Alright.
So, when you're playing...
You want to place your fingers, with your left hand.
Don't your bend your,
keep your wrist out, don't bend it in.
With your bow hold,
I wanna make a bow hold.
And, just play a good tune, I guess.
(mid-tempo violin music)
- Very nice!
That was good!
Should everybody learn to play the violin?
- Yeah!
- Yeah, yeah!
Thank you!
Why does this academy exist?
- Well...
The Suzuki Academy, it was founded in the 70s.
And it's based on a method of learning musical instruments,
invented by Dr. Suzuki,
after World War II, in Japan.
And the whole idea, is that it approaches music
as if it was a language.
So, we start young.
We try to immerse the student in it.
Lots of parent involvement.
And we try to get this organic sense of...
Musical ability from it.
- How young do you start?
- Our youngest students are three.
So, we have three year olds playing violin.
We have a three year old violin class, yeah.
(group playing mid-tempo music)
Alright, rest position!
- [Shelley Voiceover] Teach me, to play this violin!
- [Jacob Voiceover] Alright.
So, we'll start with your right hand.
- Okay. - Needs to be real loose.
Just shake it out. - Okay, shake it out.
- [Jacob] And now, I want you to flop your fingers
over the bow, like this.
Yeah, let's try it, and don't curl up.
Just flop 'em.
And then, your thumb goes right here.
- And just hold on to it.
- And just hold onto it, so it's loose, it's real loose.
But that's, this is your bow hold.
- I'm left handed!
- Doesn't matter. - Okay!
- Doesn't matter. (Shelley chuckling)
Good! - Alright. (exclaims)
'Kay, holding onto that-- - And now,
with your left hand...
I want you to hold the violin right here.
You wanna bring it up, over your head, overhead.
- Oh, that's kinda fun!
- [Jacob] All the way down, on top.
And then, put your neck.
- Like this?
- [Jacob] Yeah, yes!
Absolutely!
So, hold onto this bow.
And now...
I'll go first.
(shrill violin music)
Your turn.
Good!
Let's try it on another string!
There we go!
Go for it.
Beautiful, beautiful! - Wow!
Thank you very much! - Yeah, you're very welcome!
(group playing mid-tempo music)
- [Shelley Voiceover] Tell me about Suzuki.
Dr. Suzuki.
- So, Dr. Suzuki was a violin player, and teacher,
from Japan.
And after World War II, he...
Had this vision of making music lessons, violin lessons,
more accessible.
So, his whole thing was,
that every child can, and should, play music.
So, at the time, and it's less so now,
but there is this idea,
that you had to go and find the most talented kids,
and find the kids who have the talent,
and then pluck 'em out, and train 'em really good,
and then you'll have the best violin players.
And Dr. Suzuki, and myself, are against that,
to a certain degree.
It's something that everyone can do.
And if you're patient, and nurturing,
and have high standards...
It's absolutely an activity for everybody.
- [Shelley Voiceover] So, if I'm a 12 year old,
you work with me a little more, than Johnny over there?
That might be,
gotten it the first go round. - Absolutely!
I'd work with you, no matter what!
Yeah, yeah.
There's a big emphasis on listening to music,
and the more we listen, the more we'll internalize it,
and the more the piece becomes our own.
And all of it is based around the idea
that music is a language.
And now, let's start with your feet,
make sure your feet are underneath your shoulders,
and your knees are loose.
And let's see you bring the violin up over your head.
Oh, other hand.
Yeah.
- With this hand?
- Yep! - Oh, yeah.
- And find that sweet spot on your shoulder.
- I feel like I'm a three year old, okay.
- Now, this is something I call, airport bows.
- Airport bows?
- Where you set it, with your bow right here,
and your arms out. - Arms out.
- And you fold it in, like this.
- Ooh, where they, oh yeah, I've seen this!
- Yeah!
You can use the whole bow.
- What's the purpose of this?
- So, this helps...
(Shelley exclaiming) Let's try it again.
Yeah!
And it helps open and close your right arm,
'cause it's this gesture, which is so important,
to getting a good sound.
- Okay, one more time, here we go.
Ready? - Go for it.
- Voila!
- [Jacob] Gorgeous, gorgeous!
- How cool, with you being influenced by Suzuki,
as a young Jacob,
and now, an older Jacob.
How is that influenced your life, this experience?
- It cannot be overstated,
how much that Suzuki Academy has affected my life.
When I grew up here, in the method,
and in the Suzuki program,
I was very into it.
It was a big priority for me.
And then, yeah, all my...
All my musical training.
And then, my early professional experience.
Yeah, all came from the Suzuki Academy of Kalamazoo.
- [Shelley Voiceover] Get your little girls involved?
- They already are!
Yeah.
- Are you different than the other trained violinists?
- Well, I don't how different I am,
but I do think of my Suzuki training, growing up.
Whenever I'm in orchestra, or playing chamber music...
There's such a...
Emphasis on listening, and following the conductor,
as opposed to, you know, reading the music on the page.
I feel a freedom, when I play,
that I think comes from the Suzuki method.
(group clapping)
Very nice, very nice!
