This is our second day in Ankara. And we met Onur here, a must seen place...
This place is owned by Ilker Yilmaz, who prepares special vehicles by love and care.
Let's have a look inside.
We are already following him at Instagram @ruf50.
He is worldwide famous with his 2JZ powered tyre burning BMW E30. Also has a lovely E21 323i Alpina.
He is already a motorhead phenomenon. And we will meet him first time.
- Wellcome. - Hi. Nice to meet you, I'm Burak. - Hi, I'm Ilker. -
Finally we are here. I've heard lots of interesting news from internet about this place.
And we talked several times at social media before about your famous E21.
Beasts are resting in here. - Yes, some of them are here.
- Can we have a look? - Of course.
This is your M3 with Supra engine, isn't it? - Yes, true
So, when or when is your interest about the cars started?
- It begins by 1993. My father was also very engaged to cars.
In 1993, we had a 2000 cc 131 Mirafiori. That car had influenced me. And continued with BMW 323i E21.
And we are here as you can see.
It's a passion.
- How many car do you have right now?
16.
I have some Americans, and also BMW's.
- I know the E24 BMW 635i, E21 323i Alpina that you rebuilt from shell.
- I have also an E30 Cabrio, An E92 M3, and these that you see here.
- I have a Nascar also.
- And RUF plated E30 off course. - Yes, he is my boy.
- But this is my last piece, E46 M3.
- This is a worldwide unique project, am I right?
Yes, it is unique at these setups as I know.
- People are working on BMW M Engines, but you have swapped a 2JZ Supra engine in an M3.
- Yes, engine displacement is also gained to 3.4 litres.
- What do you have in the parts list? Mainly off course.
3.4 litres forged stroker kit with a 10.1 compression ratio, 80 mm turbocharger.
Engine internals are also completely Forged.
CNC port polished cylinder head.
Engine block has build by Titan Racing
We haven't changed the transmission. It is an E46 M3 transmission.
Diferential, shaft and axles are remaining, E46 M3.
We have modified the brake system with CSL disks, and M135 6 piston calipers.
We have a half roll cage inside, and at the trunk.
As a result how much horsepower does it produce?
We have seen 1050 horse power at dyno. But it has a potential of 1400 HP.
- We got these numbers at 1.2 bar turbo pressure. But it can climb up to 2.5 bar with no problem.
For my opinion, we can raise up to 3.0 bar without any problem. The internals are prepared for such pressures.
Engine is okay, but I can't guarantee about chassis, and suspension.
What have you done to chassis?
We reinforced the chassis with special weldings, changed the suspension, anti-roll bars.
But remaining is a standart E46 M3.
We have done all the necessary surgeries. But we don't have an intension of driving this car with 1400 hp.
I don't race. This is my hobby, and I am very happy with my cars. This is my rehabilitation.
My other cars are staying in a secured garage.
Can we have a look under. Onur has told me about the underbody of this car.
Very neat, very clean.
Here is a bit different, isn't it?
Yes, normally there are 4 exhaust pipes at M3. And a big silencer off course.
But, when we installed a single exit silencer, there is a huge space has remained.
We've covered here with an aluminium panel.
So, we avoided the air tribulance and parachute effect caused by this huge space.
This is nice. It is like the racing cars, I can only see the exhaust.
You can see that, because it's very huge; 100 mm, 4 inches.
We used HKS Titanium silencer only. There is no other silencer, only straight pipe.
But, the sound is not disturbing. I like it
- Yes, it's good at idle, and in the city. But when you hit the throttle... You will see...
Can we have a ride? - Why not, let's go.
It has been an interesting Ankara trip for us.
- Why? - We have met you :)
I have been following you from social media for a long time.
You have lovely cars as we saw. But I had never a chance of witnessing such power at the passenger seat.
Plus, you're driving them.
- I'm driving rear wheel drive fast cars since 1992.
- No, I mean people hesitate of driving such modified cars. These kind of cars can easily break up. But you don't mind.
For example, we want people to do launch control. But they don't want to do it usually. Or do only for 3-4 seconds.
But you did it for 47 seconds. We have the video.
I remunerate what we installed to this vehicle. We did it for doing such things.
And it is very strong, very tough as I see.
But you have told me before that a 2JZ engine is very durable, very strong.
- Yes I agree. But some people say that it is not healthy when you enlarge the displacement to 3.4 litres.
But you have seen... We're pushing it up to 8500 rpm for maybe half an hour. Have you seen anything unusual?
Look at the gauges. Neither water temp nor oil temperature or pressure goes wrong.
- Yes, after we have forced the car for wheel burning, we opened the hood and checked the water hoses.
Usually these kind of hardly modified cars do not have smooth idle. Yours has.
When you're building an engine, you have to prepare a strong skeleton first. This is the first rule.
All of the internal parts are special.
- It is not a project like buying a powerful engine, and install it to the engine bay.
This is not a standart 2JZ. All the internals, modified internals are special.
- For that reason, this car is a unique one not only for Turkey. It is unique for Europe, maybe worldwide.
I know people who swapped 2JZ into BMW, but I haven't come across with 3.4 litre 2JZ before.
- Did you realise that it is not an original engine when you open the hood? I like to do it this way.
People who first see the bay usually tells that 'it's like factory built'. That makes me proud and happy.
We have working in this project for nearly 2 years.
Not only mechanically, also cosmetically.
And I am lucky that I have friends like me, like to struggle with cars.
I want to thank especially two of them; Yusuf and Gokhan, they helped me a lot.
One of them is engine expert, and the other electrics. We, three of us have built this car.
Our office is located in the industrial area, and our profession is industry. So we don't hurry, we made it slowly but in the right way.
We have worked on a special part one day. The other day we have done another part.
We have worked with love. We gave it our love.
We don't use this car as a transportation vehicle, so we love it in a different way.
- I have realised it. When I look at your workplace, I see. It's ultra clean, and tidy everywhere.
I didn't even see any oil leak at the floor.
- We are spending 80 percent of our lives in our workplaces. So we have to keep them as clean as possible.
Which ECU are you using?
We use VIPEC. Onur Data is responsible for the mapping process.
Parts supply is made by Günay Güleç, Boost Projects in San Diego. He is our sponsor also.
Can we make mapping adjustments from here, turbo boost etc?
- No, no. These items are all serving as different gauges.
Oil pressure, oil temperature, water temperature, water pressure, battery charge, fuel pressure, exhaust temperature, air/fuel ratio.
We don't have Electronic Boost Controller, turbo boost is adjusting itself according to vehicle speed.
In these kind of powerful engines that have enormous turbochargers, when you apply huge turbo pressure at low engine revs, it is not possible to handle the car easily.
It couldn't transfer the whole power to the ground. Wheels start to spin so easily, and don't stop.
So the whole turbo pressure is applied at speeds after 100 and 120 km/h.
Now turbo pressure is around 1.0 bar. And it is adjusted for 95 octane pump fuel.
But when we need 1400 hp, turbocharger must pump such pressures of 2.5 - 3.0 bar.
- When you have such power, than what would be the 100-200 km/h acceleration time?
- We have obtained a time of 4.5 seconds at 1.6 bar, with E50 alcohol fuel mixture.
- Wow, supersport cars do 3-4 seconds of 0-100 km/h acceleration times. And you're talking about similar time at 100-200 km/h! Unbelievable!
Now we can already do 5.5 seconds with 1.0 bar and pump fuel. Together!
Unbelievable!
It is very strange that all the equipment is still there, at their places. People nearly leave their pants at home for reducing weight.
You have the infotainment screen in here, and it is working.
- No, I care about cosmetics, functionality, and originality.
And I don't like to uninstall functional parts from my vehicle.
- There is a half roll-bar at the rear, but the rear seats are still at their places.
What is the brand of the roll-bar?
There is a German brand, Wiechers.
- This affects the traction very positively, isn't it?
- Yes, definitely. For example, sometimes we have to uninstall it. But when we try to put back, it's really not easy. You couldn't match the holes.
It increases the torsional rigidity. Because such a power strains the chassis. It is normal.
Did you realise that it strains when we apply such pressures?
- No, I don't. It goes, it flies... In a different way. I was in love, I couldn't focus on anything else :)
- It is a bit powerful. Thanks.
- To be honest, I am a bit shocked for two days. 1000 hp plus cars, 4-5 seconds.
I am not used to. They caused me to have some headache.
But this car is comfortable. Isolation is very well, there is no annoying noise.
We can easily talk inside.
We are not jumping all time time because of suspension.
- No, I also don't like so stiff suspension.
- This is my ideal car, ideal setup. Lovely.
