Damn, look at that s****!

Welcome to the Silent D Motor Show. I'm your host Silent D. And this is a 2017

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport.

Grand Sport was first introduced in 1963,

a racing inspired lighter Corvette powered by a 6.2 liter small-block V8, it then

reappeared in 1996, in a limited production or 1000 vehicles, then again

in 2010, and then in 2017, the car we're looking at today. They all had one thing

in common - they're very much track focused, being lighter, having better

aerodynamics and better handling than a regular Corvette. And the Corvette is

really America's all-time most iconic sports car. And given the Grand Sport's

history and a rarity I would argue that this brand new car is an Instant Classic,

a concept I introduced in my G-Wagon episode a couple of months back.

And that's why today we'll take a closer look at this beautiful fast

Instant Classic, but first let's say hello to its owner, my good friend Matt.

Hey Matt, thanks for letting me feature your car

on the show. Of course! And also thanks for being a subscriber since pretty much

day one. I love the Silent D Motor Show! I remember I posted on Instagram if you

weeks back bragging about getting 100 subscribers and you were quick to

comment saying... well you asked for a t-shirt you know saying that...

I did. Gimme some merch man, gimme some merch!

Yes, I agree! Being, you know, first hundred subscriber, certainly, you know,

you deserve something. So here you go, my friend.

And it's even custom. So it's got your

hashtag there in in the back, so yeah. I love it! I love it! Thanks buddy.

And now that that's out of the way, shall we go for a drive? Let's do it!

Nice shirt, bro!

Thanks man. I got it from a homie.

Running a bit low are we? Indeed.

Oh, it sounds nice! Right? F**** yeah.

It's best between third and fourth gear, like on the downshift it does this

little blip and it sounds like Chewbacca. F****** awesome.

So we're in California, East Bay, a little north east of San Francisco. And then we're

going where? Alameda Naval Base.

So what's different on the Grand Sport over a regular one?

The suspensions is a little stiffer, it's got the aerodynamic body kit, and then you've got the vents

in the wheel wells for the brakes.

And really fun stickers that make it look like a Hot Wheels car. And this being a

Collector Edition, you also get this fancy blue. That's right.

Neon Miami Blue.

I always wanted this car though.

I had a poster of one of these, the 96 C4 Corvette I think it was. It was a Grand Sport.

I had a poster of one of them above my bed when I was a kid.

Dreams do come true kids!

You shot the Chevelle over here before, right? Yeah, I did a shoot with Karyn.

It's a great place to shoot cars, man. Yea, it's awesome.

I was trying to find this open parking lot.

It's really good for blowing cookies in. Up here is where it is.

Blowing cookies, is that what you said? Yeah.

I know about donuts... Same thing. But cookies? Yeah.

Pastries related... Yeah pastries related burnouts.

There we go. Here it is.

Nice! Tires are evil and they must be destroyed!

Damn, look at that s***!

So you wanna take it for a spin? You gonna let me? Absolutely!

Fun right? It pulls!

You never really manual anymore, like... Nobody even makes them, dude.

We're getting the thumbs up. Easy to drive though, right? Yeah, super smooth. Yeah, you

can drive it like grandma's car, or you can put the pedal down, which I wanna do one more time.

Yeah. Cuz that was fun!

But it's just classic American fun, and honestly

in this car you don't have to drive 120 miles an hour to have a good time, right.

Like doing 45-65 miles an hour, putting it through the gears... even 90 is like a

f****** blast, you know.

So that's actually what I like about the Grand Sport. It's you can...,

most people can drive it easily and keep it on the road.

No but the ZO6, man, you roast the tires in every gear and the ass just comes out

and you go sideways, it's impossible to to drive the thing. So that has like

600 something, right? Yeah 650, but it's it's so ridiculous.

And this is 460? Somewhere in there.

But honestly, you know, not every car needs a

ton of power. And that's kind of what I like

about this. It's just well-balanced.

There's a couple guys looking at having some fun too!

There are a couple guys with a Mustang back there. Oh, s**** what's up? What is

happening here? Everybody's just snapping pics man. Nice car

BMW 3-series. M2 possibly or? Yeah that might be the 3, yeah.

And then a Mustang and a Charger.

Very cool! Mercury Cougar

That's a boss Mustang. That Camaro though. Listen to that!

67 I think.

Love it, man. It's awesome.

Aw, smell that jazz. Smell that fuel!

M3 coming in. Old-school! Dude, we got to just go back and park and

shoot this s****!

So it's just us now. Matt's out. He's up there getting ready to film. He was kind

enough to let me do a little acceleration test. So let's see what this

Corvette can do!

Okay, it's tempting to leave Matt here, but I think we should

go pick him up. And then call it the day!

That was awesome. Thanks for letting me do that, man. Yeah, man.

And thanks to you for watching. If you agree that this is indeed an Instant

Classic, click that like button, throw in a comment, subscribe and I

shall see you next time!

how fun dude I'm glad we were there for that

Is the V-8—called LT5 even though it sticks with Corvette's traditional overhead valve, two valves per cylinder—at the max for how much power can be pushed from a front engine to rear wheels? Chief engineer Tadge Juechter is cagey.

"Every time we thought we were at the max, we weren't," he said.

That's his way of not discussing a mid-engine Corvette to usher in the next generation and the expected switch to a dual overhead cam engine.

For now, the ZR1 is the most powerful 'Vette to date, and there are no compromises for those who buy the convertible.

It has the same underbody as the coupe, the same aluminum track chassis with no extra bracing required, and the same suspension tuning.

"All the convertible hardware just bolts right on," Juechter said.

The only structural changes are to accommodate the folding top and repositioned seat belt mounts.

And even with a few extra trappings, the convertible gains less than 60 pounds over the coupe's 3,560-pound curb weight.

Like the coupe, the convertible comes with a choice of a stanchion-mounted smaller low wing or a crazy high wing bolted to the chassis; the latter produces up to 950 pounds of downforce and needs a front underwing in the splitter to keep the front down.

The high wing is part of the $2,995 ZTK Performance package.

Chevy still offers the seven-speed manual transmission, or buyers can get an automatic for the first time in a ZR1 with GM's eight-speed with paddle shift.

GM's new 10-speed does not fit.

The cars also have GM's first dual fuel-injection system: primary direct injection and supplemental port injection.

Estimated fuel economy is 15/22 mpg in city/highway driving with the manual and 13/23 with the automatic.

The 2019 ZR1 reflects today's customers who want all the choices in their biggest and baddest dream car, Juechter said.

That means adding an automatic transmission option, and it means offering a convertible.

"People want everything max," said Peters, who loves the lower, wider look of the convertible.

"The drama of the body shape stands out more.

The wing will be over the top on the convertible.

That is a dramatic statement.

It is our gift to the world.".

And then there's the exhaust note.

Juechter said you can tell from a mile away when GM is testing the ZR1 at its Milford proving ground.

Building on the bimodal exhaust system offered on other Corvette models, the ZR1 has four modes each tuned to sound different.

In Stealth mode, the ZR1 is quieter than the Z06.

Conversely, in Track mode, it is much louder.

That is because a spring-loaded passive valve closes to allow virtually unrestricted exhaust flow for maximum performance.

The other two modes are Tour and Sport.

For true appreciation, put the top down in the convertible and select Track, Peters said.

Production of the 2019 model year starts at the retooled plant early next year.

Chevy expects to sell 2,000-3,000 ZR1s, but the Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant can make more if needed.

It will be available in North America and the Middle East but not Europe, which meant the new front clip and fascia with four new radiators didn't need to meet Europe's pedestrian protection regulations.

"The front end has almost no fascia; it is almost all openings," Juechter said.

Convertibles could be 15 percent of the mix.

Owners might never track their car, Peters said.

They prefer the look and shape of a convertible but still want a powerful car and know how to make a dramatic entrance.

"Picture pulling up to a restaurant in an orange one," he said, referring to the Sebring Orange Design package with orange body and matching brake calipers, rocker and splitter accent stripes, seat belts, and stitching.

And they can still get two golf bags in the back with the folded top.

Want to make an entrance at the country club? They will hear your new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 convertible from about a mile away with its 6.2-liter supercharged V-8.

And then they will see it: the long hood with bulging intercooler and the crazy high wing on the back.

Yes, not only is the king back for 2019, but the ZR1 is also being offered as a convertible for those who don't want the coupe with a removable hardtop.

It is the first ZR1 drop-top since the original 1970 model year.

The coupe has a top speed of 212 mph, and the convertible also exceeds 200 mph.

Preliminary testing by Chevy has the ZR1 doing 0–60 mph in less than 30 seconds, and the quarter mile is in the "high 10-second range" with the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Both the convertible and coupe go on sale in the spring.

The coupe starts at $119,995, and the convertible starts at $123,995.

The Corvette team knew from the start that this ZR1 would be different: time to offer the king as a convertible and with an automatic transmission.

Push a button, and the top is down in 21 seconds—and it can be done remotely or while driving up to 30 mph.

Convertibles are part of Corvette heritage.

The first model was a convertible: a concept show car for the Motorama display at the New York auto show in 1953, which led to 300 hand-built white convertibles for the '53 model year.

The '63 Sting Ray introduced the idea of a coupe, and the C3 brought us the removable T-top.

"There was always going to be a convertible," said Tom Peters, design chief for Chevrolet performance.

"There was no doubt in my mind," he said, even early in the program when they had no idea where the power would end up.

In the end, the 6.

2-liter supercharged pushrod small-block V-8 has been coaxed to produce 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque, helped by the massive 2.

65-liter supercharger.

Is the V-8—called LT5 even though it sticks with Corvette's traditional overhead valve, two valves per cylinder—at the max for how much power can be pushed from a front engine to rear wheels? Chief engineer Tadge Juechter is cagey.

Motortrend View:2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV - Duration: 4:12.

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV.

As a reasonably priced all-electric vehicle with a highly livable 238-mile driving range, the Chevrolet Bolt EV has few direct competitors.

It teams a powerful electric motor with a large-capacity battery pack that can be charged quickly at a public station via an optional fast-charging connection.

Not only is the Bolt a convincing EV, it also does a good job of just being a car; it sports a perfectly usable—if cheap-looking—cabin with plenty of space for four adults, offers competitive cargo-hauling capability, and features high-tech infotainment and active safety features.

Proof positive that daily driving duties can indeed be handed off to all-electric vehicles, the Bolt EV is a groundbreaking vehicle leading the charge against the automotive world's dependence on internal-combustion engines.

The Bolt EV is still in its infancy after debuting in 2017, so only minor changes are in store for its second year.

An automatically heated steering wheel is now part of the Comfort and Convenience package on the LT trim and is standard on the upscale Premier model.

All Bolt EVs now come with revised sun visors that slide to provide more flexibility in blocking the sun.

The Bolt EV was a completely new model for 2017.

Don't confuse it with the similarly named Chevrolet Volt, which is a plug-in hybrid with both an electric motor and a gasoline engine—and far less electric-only range.

The Bolt EV's affordability is a paramount part of its appeal, so we'd keep it simple by sticking with the base LT model rather than the ritzier Premier.

The LT comes standard with features such as:.

• 10.

2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto• Proximity-key entry and push-button start• Backup camera• 4G LTE with mobile Wi-Fi.

The Bolt EV LT offers two affordable option packages that we'd choose: the $555 Comfort and Convenience package (includes heated front seats and steering wheel) and the $495 Driver Confidence package (blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors).

We'd also add DC fast-charging capability for $750.

All in, our well-equipped Bolt EV stickers for $39,295—a number that can be offset by the federal tax credit of $7500 available to electric-vehicle buyers.

Some states offer additional rebates, tax credits, and other incentives to EV buyers as well.

Here's our explanation of how the EV tax credit works.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport.

WHAT WE LIKE: The Grand Sport's everyday usability and the glorious power of its LT1 V-8 continue to impress.

Driving it back to back with far pricier choices in the high-performance sports-car realm reveals that the chassis in General Motors' marquee sports car delivers better isolation while maintaining a lustworthy suppleness in its steering and handling.

Cameras on the nose of the Vette give us an idea of when we're about to connect with a curb during low-speed and parking maneuvers, but it requires that we actually use them, which is easier said than done, necessitating a tap or two on the center touchscreen.

Nearly every logbook comment mentions drivers' preferences for the base seats in this car, so you can safely conclude that we like them more than the optional Competition seats.

WHAT WE DON'T LIKE: Both the rearward and forward cameras display a hilariously low-resolution image in our 2017 model, the lack of crispness making it difficult to discern the edge of a hard object.

Chevrolet claims to have upped the pixel count for '18.

Also, one astute reader pointed out that when we chided this car for not quite making the same grip as other Grand Sports, we were comparing a car with its tires inflated to 35 psi (this one) to others with tires set to 30 psi.

So, we don't like it when we (meaning this author) make boneheaded comparisons.

It turns out this car's rocker panel was repaired at a dealership before we took possession and the tire placard on the door jamb was replaced with an inaccurate one, resulting in our overfilling of the tires.

All Grand Sports' tires should indeed be inflated to 30 psi.

WHAT WENT WRONG: Nothing went wrong that was the Grand Sport's fault.

After two and a half months in the fleet, our blue Vette developed a moderate vibration at speed.

We pulled the wheels and attempted to rebalance them, only to learn that all four wheels were bent.

Michigan roads having taken their toll, we paid a wheel-repair specialist $480 to straighten three wheels.

The left-rear wheel was cracked and a replacement 12-by-20-inch wheel ran $619 at the dealer; feeling lazy, we also spent $20 to have the dealer swap the 25-series, run-flat tire because not having to muscle tires that big off and on a wheel is worth every bit of a couple of sawbucks.

WHERE WE WENT: Aside from the Vette's pilgrimage to its birthplace of Bowling Green, Kentucky, for the solar eclipse in August, it hasn't left the state of Michigan.

We're not quite sure why; it's well known that the 15-cubic-foot cargo hold offers plenty of practicality as far as sports cars go.

Unfortunately for the Grand Sport, it likely will stay near home through most of the winter.

We recently acquired a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s in the OE size ($1515 for four) to keep the car safely on the road in snow and ice.

The one unfortunate aspect of this is that the PA4s are not run-flats.

Taking a road trip without provisions for a flat tire is the kind of gamble few of us enjoy considering, so we don't expect to be stretching the car's legs much before spring.
