Set fans to electric: new Audi SQ7 TDI packs electric supercharging tech

Audi has beaten its rivals to market with the worlds first electrically powered supercharging technology on a production car, with its new high-performance V8 diesel SQ7.

Weve seen the technology discussed previously on concept cars but the fastest Q7 is unveiled today, goes on UK sale in May and the first customer cars land in August 2016. How does the SQ7 make its boost?.

At the heart of the maximum Q7 is a new 40-litre V8 turbodiesel.

It has a pair of conventional turbochargers, acting sequentially - the smaller, lower inertia blower for use at low engine speeds, before the larger one takes over once the revs (and exhaust gases) are flowing fully.

However, also in the diesels intake tract – and downstream of the intercoolers – is an electrically driven centrifugal supercharger, which is powered by the SQ7s new 48-volt electrical subsystem.

It spins up far faster than the turbochargers, quickly generating the boost the engine needs to perform properly at lower speeds and when moving off.

This should, in theory, banish lag – it works independently of the turbochargers and provides adequate boost for the engine until the first turbos up to speed, and generating positive pressure, at about 1500rpm.

Audi explains the benefits: Because the electric powered compressor (EPC) does not require any exhaust-gas energy to develop boost, it can be used at any time, thus making it the solution for the traditional weaknesses of the classic exhaust-gas turbocharger.

With this technology, turbo lag is history.. The company claims full boost is delivered in less than 250 milliseconds. Well find out for sure when we drive the SQ7 this spring.

Audi quotes some outlandish performance figures:. 429bhp and 664lb ft 0-62mph in 4. 8sec Top speed limited to 155mph 38. 2mpg combined economy 194g/km of CO2 emissions.

Facelifted Audi A3 range revealed: new tech, kit and engines - Duration: 5:51.

Facelifted Audi A3 range revealed: new tech, kit and engines

Audi's got around to revamping its A3 range, bringing it into line with the company's more recent offerings. Key updates include styling tweaks, Xenon or LED headlights as standard, an upgraded kit list and new engine and equipment options.

So what's new outside?. Minor tweaks all round, really. The grille's been sharpened up slightly, as have the lights, meaning the A3's exterior now more closely resembles the likes of the latest A4.

The colour palette's been widened, too – and no, it's not just a load of different greys. Among the new colours are shades of blue, red and yellow. The wheel designs have been updated as well.

Xenon lights with LED daytime running lights are standard-fit now, although S line and S3 versions come with LED lights. The advanced, dazzle-preventing Matrix LED headlight system is also offered. Are the changes inside more extensive?  .

The key update is the new option of Audi's excellent 12. 3in 'virtual cockpit', which replaces the conventional analogue gauge cluster.

Standard equipment throughout the range includes the 7in folding MMI radio system, while sat-nav is standard on SE Technik models and above. Pleasingly, cruise control is standard on all variants, too.

Every A3 gets Android and iOS connectivity, while inductive charging, numerous safety systems, a heated steering wheel and a massaging driver's seats are available as options. What are the trim and engine choices?.

There's plenty to choose from, that's for sure. Trim levels consist of SE, SE Technik, Sport and S line, as well as the flagship high-performance S3 derivative.

You've also got three-door, five-door, cabriolet and saloon bodystyles to pick from in many cases – so most customers should be able to find something in the line-up that fulfills their requirements.

A new 10-litre three-cylinder TFSI petrol has been added to the range, so the engine-line up for the conventional A3 variants is now as follows:.

10 TFSI: 113bhp, 148lb ft 1. 4 TFSI COD: 148bhp, 184lb ft 20 TFSI: 187bhp, 236lb ft 1. 6 TDI: 109bhp, 184lb ft 20 TDI: 148bhp, 251lb ft 20 TDI: 181bhp, 280lb ft.

Transmission choices for most variants include manual and dual-clutch gearboxes, while quattro all-wheel drive is available in the 20 TFSI petrol version and standard in S3 versions.

Sports suspension, which is standard on the S line models, is available and cuts the ride height by 15mm. Go for the optional S line sport suspension and the ride height gets cut by a total of 25mm.

An electrically powered variable steering system is also offered on many versions of the facelifted A3, and standard on the high-performance S3. Any other interesting things I need to know?.

Audi claims that the kerb weight of the 10-litre TFSI-engined A3 is 1150kg, reputedly making it the lightest in its class.

The flagship S3 version also gets fractionally more punch for 2016, benefitting from an extra 9bhp and 14.8lb ft. That means a total of 306bhp and 295lb ft, the latter of which is on offer from 2000-5400rpm.

When will the updated A3s be available?. You can order any of the facelifted A3 range in May. Deliveries are expected to start towards the end of summer, but the plug-in hybrid A3 Sportback e-tron won't arrive until later this year.

Exact pricing has yet to be confirmed but expect it to be similar to that of the current line-up.

Audi A8 L extended limo: six doors for more mayors? - Duration: 4:36.

Audi A8 L extended limo: six doors for more mayors?

Remember that odd, extra-long wheelbase, six-door version of the Audi A8 that our spies spotted tested in Sweden in January? Well, the John Holmes of the Ingolstadt luxury limo range has now officially broken cover, as a specially commissioned one-off dubbed the A8 L extended.

The A8 L extended, eh? Just how much Viagra has this Audi swallowed?.

With an entirely new exterior skin from the a-pillar backwards, the A8 L extended is a not-insubstantial 6. 36 metres in length – while the 4. 22 metre wheelbase has grown almost 1. 1 metres over the standard A8 L.

That's so long it requires special marker lights in the headlamps and tail lamps in order to comply with vehicle regulations. Though it's still not quite as lengthy as the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman at 6.5 metres.

Who ordered this thing, and how much did it cost?. Both of these aspects remain a mystery. All Audi will say about the origins of the idea is that it was built to order at 'the special request of a European customer.'.

As for the cost, the project required almost a year to develop, build, test and finish to production model standards, so we can safely say it won't have been cheap.

It was intended as a one-off, but Audi has already received enquiries from other interested parties, which ought to help spread the cost. Technically, what's new then?.

Not only is much of the bodywork bespoke but the aluminium Audi Space Frame structure had to be extended and then reinforced, with extra aluminium tubing and cross-bracing  –added in to the roof in particular.

Even this doesn't stop it being bendier than the boggo model – such is physics. There's a massive 2.4 metre glass panel in said roof, in order to brighten-up the six-door, six-seat interior.

Rows two and three get individually electrically adjustable chairs – thrones, really – with a coolbox and infotainment setup for those in the very rear. That's 'velvet beige' Valcona leather, in case you're curious.

The glass of this particular 'moonlight blue' example isn't tinted, but there are side blinds on every window to stop the air conditioning from having a conniption.

Meanwhile, the double-walled rear bulkhead between the boot and the passenger compartment make the A8 L extended ideal for transporting particularly ripe brie, so you'll have no problems if you stop to shop at the Chunnel.

Has the A8 L extended got a V8?. Instead it's powered by a 30-litre forced-induction petrol V6, good for 306bhp and 324lb ft and capable of dragging this XXL-mobile 0-62mph in 7.1sec, despite the 2418kg kerb weight.

Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph (imagine seeing that on the autobahn), while the 19-inch wheels cover a braking system borrowed from the Audi S8.

All of which sounds wonderful, until you realise there's an all-new A8 inbound shortly, based on the new MSB platform developed by Porsche.
