This Swift may look like its predecessor on the outside.
Production of that predecessor stopped in 2010 to make way for this car.
It is a new generation Swift, though. There's a lot of new technology under the surface.
You can't call them the same car. It's a whole new generation.
That surprised me. I thought this was a facelift of the previous generation, but it's not.
In fact, this generation itself got a facelift.
That one can be recognized by its different taillights, grille, and turn signals on the side mirrors.
This generation Swift was built from 2010 to 2017. It made way for the newest generation Swift.
This generation was built in three varieties, of which two were on the Dutch market.
The 4-door sedan never made it to the European market.
However, there was also a 3-door and 5-door hatchback. Both did make it.
There aren't that many engine flavors.
The gasoline engines have 89 or 93 hp. The Sport has 134 hp.
There was also a 1.3 diesel engine with 74 hp.
It wasn't very popular in the Netherlands.
You won't find many of those when looking for a Swift.
ENGINES gasoline, diesel
There was another fun phenomenon aside from the engine varieties.
Suzuki made AllGrip all-wheel drive available for the Swift.
For those who like off-roading: you can drive a Swift too.
About 500 Swifts of this generation are for sale on AutoTrack.
When looking for model year 2017, you'll find many cars of the new generation.
That distorts the numbers a bit, but there are about 500 of this generation.
Prices range from 5,000 and 17,000 euros.
Of course, 17,000 euros buys you a fresh Swift Sport.
PRICES minimum, maximum
There are quite a number of reasons to buy a Swift.
It's a nice handling car, not just the Sport version.
Yes, we're driving a Sport today, but the normal Swift also has good handling.
Aside from that, this is a reliable car you can drive for little money.
It's a cheap car to own.
Not much breaks. They're super reliable.
Of course, there are a few things to watch out for. Let's talk about that.
First, the scary part: the engine problems.
It's not that bad. Keep in mind that the automatic transmission is an old one.
The automatic transmission wants to work, but only when it suits him.
That means it's rather slow.
The manual transmission may not shift smoothly, mainly in the Swift Sport.
If this is the case, 99 times out of 100 this can be solved by changing the transmission oil.
The problem should no longer occur.
Lastly, the Swift (again, mainly the Sport) can have clutch judders.
You'll feel vibrations when using the clutch.
This is usually caused by a worn clutch plate.
If it gets really bad, the clutch will need replacing.
It's a wear part after all.
Check if it's there when you're going on a test drive and decide if it needs replacing or not.
It's all up to you at that moment.
There aren't many exciting problems with the suspension.
Do check if the handbrake works.
You'll do that on a hill. Yank it up, release the brake pedal, and the car should stay where it is.
If it doesn't, the handbrake probably needs adjusting. That's usually the only thing.
The Swift is known to leave the handbrake margins and won't hold the car in place.
The factory windshield wipers are low quality.
Replace them with Bosch windshield wipers so you know for sure they're good.
Another low quality factory part is the headlights.
The halogen bulbs aren't that good.
Again, go to Halfords or another car parts shop for bulbs with a higher light output.
For very little money you can make it easier for yourself in the dark.
The final thing to watch out for has to do with the interior.
The Swift's interior is Japanese, so that's often an issue.
It's made from a lot of plastic; not the prettiest and most expensive plastic either.
That means it starts to wring, especially with cars that have had a hard life or are a bit older.
The plastic parts start to rub, squeak, and rattle.
This causes sounds in the car.
You'll find out soon enough when going for a test drive.
The younger cars, after the facelift, have less sounds than the older Suzuki Swifts.
We borrowed this Suzuki Swift Sport at Suzuki dealer Pijnappel in Apeldoorn.
It's a nice car. 134 hp and the handling is fun.
You have to push the engine to make the most use of it, but it's a lot of fun.
This is a black car with red stitching, as a Sport should have.
Pijnappel has other colors of the same generation as well, so take your pick.
