BMW faces suit over 'faulty' sedan in S. Korea - Duration: 1:50.

Four South Korean BMW owners have are suing the German carmaker... over a component that

appears to be the cause of recent engine fires in one of BMW's best-selling sedans.

Lee Seung-jae has the latest.

A group of South Korean BMW owners have filed a lawsuit over a component that appears to

have caused a number of fires in one of BMW's best-selling sedans.

On Monday, the group,... consisting of four owners of the BMW 520d sedan,... lodged a

suit at the Seoul Central District Court against BMW Korea and Deutsche Motors,... the local

distributor of BMW automobiles.

In the suit,... the four owners of the 520d model,... are seeking about 4-thousand-500

dollars in damages,... and could increase the amount later,... depending on the outcome

of an evaluation.

Separately,... another BMW 520d sedan owner,... whose car caught fire has taken legal action

against BMW Korea,... and is reportedly seeking nearly 9-thousand dollars in damages.

Last week,... BMW Korea said it would voluntarily recall over 100-thousand cars to fix the faulty

component that appears to have caused the fires.

The company will recall 42 different models at 61 service centers starting August 20th.

The German automaker identified the exhaust gas recirculation system, or EGR,... which

reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines,... as the main cause of the recent

fires in the 520d sedans.

BMW also plans to compensate customers whose cars caught fire due to the faulty EGR by

giving them a new vehicle of the same kind.

Meanwhile, Korea's transport ministry said Monday,... that it consulted with BMW to help

resolve the EGR-related incidents in the 520d models,... and will closely monitor the carmaker's

recall plans.
