(music) - [Announcer] Today,
on Designing Spaces, we follow one family as
they undergo a bathroom remodeling project.
Experiencing weak WiFi because your router is on
the other side of the home, we'll show you how to solve it.
Plus, impact glass can make all the difference
in the event of extreme weather.
All this and more on Designing Spaces.
- We've lived in this house for two years now.
Yeah, right before our third child was born.
- Lots of families here and we got three kids,
it's a good fit.
So when we first moved in to the house,
we really needed to clean it up, it definitely needed a facelift,
really all the way around the house.
- [Announcer] The Duesings gutted and remodeled the kitchen
in their home but the project took way longer than
expected and isn't quite finished.
- Life in general with three children is somewhat chaotic.
On a good day, I might get an hour to work on something
and it might be one day a week, which is kind of why this
whole thing is taking so long.
How tall is that?
- [Announcer] One project the family placed
on the back burner was remodeling their bathrooms.
- The bathrooms are probably priority number 45, 46 and 47
on my list of to-dos.
- [Announcer] And that's where we come in,
calling in Mansfield Plumbing to help give the Duesings
some bathroom Botox, a fresh new look that
won't break the bank and that fixes their number
one frustration as parents.
(eerie music) - It's a tough time
right now for them.
They've got old toilets that are,
some of them are inefficient.
One of them doesn't flush all the way
and they both plug up.
Either you're cleaning it, you're plunging it
or you're cleaning around it and they both share
the cleaning duties so, they're like hey, we
need something that's going to make this easier for us.
- [Announcer] Enter the Vanquish toilet,
a revolutionary new design starting with side-mounted
seat hinges that make it easy to clean.
- That flat deck surface on the back,
when a tinkle does turn to sprinkle,
you can wipe it off really easily.
Pure clean glaze so it rinses well
and then that real powerful flush mechanism that we have.
I'm really excited that is going to be a great solution.
I think it's going to solve a lot of their issues.
- [Announcer] A plumber gets to work
removing the old toilets while stylist Lindsay
Lara works with the family on design ideas for both
the kids' bathroom upstairs and the guest bath downstairs.
- Tell me a little bit what you're thinking
for the bathrooms?
- It seems small but one of the big things is that
our kids are washing their hands a lot
and the towel rack is right above the toilet
so the kids just yank the towel down,
it falls in the toilet so that's a big problem.
Just having kid-friendly bath but still having it look nice.
- [Announcer] With her mission set, Lindsay and her team
get to work renovating the bathrooms.
Meanwhile, our plumber has finished installing the
Vanquish toilet in the upstairs bathroom.
- Looks good.
- Uh, yeah.
Number one you'll see it's a elongated bowl
and high height so it's a very comfortable seat to be in.
We talked about it early on, it's this
no-hinge seat and so we've taken the seat hinges
off the top of this and we've moved them off to the side,
which gives you a nice clean deck
so that you can wipe that off.
- Easy clean, that's amazing.
I didn't think when I heard side-hinges,
I didn't really understand until I saw it.
How cool it is to just do one wipe and it's clean.
You know, you're usually wiping all around
into the crevices and it takes forever
and you don't really feel like you get it clean.
But with this, it really is really easy.
- I want you to watch this flush.
So, it's a very simple lever on the side.
You get a full flush, it looks like you get a lot more water
going through than you really do.
So, it's still the 1.6 gallons.
So, all that toilet paper that you talked about
gets pushed through.
- [Announcer] And with a soft close feature
that means no more slamming the lid.
- That toilet is really solving like every single
one of the problems that we have as parents
with kids who can't flush and are messy.
- And with that pure clean glaze, the action of the water
takes away all the debris.
So, clean toilets, easy to clean when it does get a little
dirty and easy to maintain going forward.
- [Announcer] As the renovation continues,
the plumber puts in a brand new Mansfield pedestal sink
for the downstairs bathroom and finishes up installing
the Vanquish toilet.
- I think the kids are going to love the new toilets.
They don't have to try so hard to flush,
they won't get yelled at if they didn't flush
it all the way.
- [Announcer] And finally, it's time for the big reveal
upstairs.
- Right, are you guys ready to see the bathroom?
- [All] Yes.
- Yeah, let's check it out.
- All right, let's go.
- Wow.
- Holy cow.
- Oh, it's so pretty.
New faucets.
How many towel racks.
- [Lindsay] So, what do you guys think?
- [Stephanie] We love it.
- [Lindsay] You do?
Can you see the difference?
- [Stephanie] Yes, it's beautiful.
- [Lindsay] It's clean, crisp, bright,
goes with the rest of your house so it'll be easy.
- [Stephanie] It's gorgeous.
- It's great.
- I'm so glad.
- It looks like a whole new bathroom.
- [Rick] It's a nice bright space now.
And it's nice and fresh.
- [Stephanie] Functional, too.
- [Announcer] And then the guest bathroom is revealed.
(gasps) - Wow.
- Whoa, look at that.
- [Stephanie] Oh my gosh, look at that mirror.
- [Rick] Oh, perfect.
- No more towels falling in the toilet.
It was surprising how different it looks
just by changing out light fixtures.
The vanity looks totally different now
with the different knobs and the cute little facuets.
Even though it's the same with the paint
and the light fixtures and all of those cool elements
combined, it looks like a totally new bathroom
even though we didn't gut it.
They're so excited.
They're going to love it and I'm going to love not
having to pick up after them.
And they're going to love not getting yelled at.
- And Mansfield, thank you very much
for unclogging our lives.
- [Announcer] For more information on
the Vanquish toilet or any other of their
bathroom products, visit mansfieldplumbing.com

- (speaks in foreign language) - (speaks in foreign language)
- Oh, no no no.
Chris.
My Internet's out again.
It's not working.
- My name's Chris.
I am in sales for a national company
so I get to travel quite a bit around the country
and when I'm not traveling, I'm working at home.
And this is my beautiful wife, Janet.
- I'm Janet.
I also work from the house.
And I teach online Spanish.
We just work from the house a lot
and we have our kids at home, mostly Olivia, our son goes
to school during the day.
But we just work from wherever we can get Internet
and wherever we can use our computers.
- Sometimes when we work towards the back of the house
and since it is so far back and it's concrete
block and stucco, the signal is a lot weaker there
than it is here right in the living room.
- Today I was tutoring a student,
and my Internet went out, which happens from time to time
and it's really a big disruption to the student and myself,
as their teacher.
I just can't have that throughout the day.
And neither can he.
- [Announcer] Fed up, Charlene from Milo Wifi
is going to show Chris and Janet how to get the most
out of their Internet.
- Hi, I'm Charlene from Milo.
I hear you have a WiFi problem.
With the structure of their home,
they're having difficulty with the router or the modem
in the living room really reaching up to the baby's room
or reaching up to the office.
So, Milo comes in and what we do is we provide
that reliable coverage at an affordable price.
- Our router over here.
- Okay, that's where your router is.
- My office is all the way over there
and then I have the baby's room upstairs.
- It's all the way up here.
Okay, so is your problem that your WiFi is just not reaching
everywhere it needs to go?
- Yes, we're not getting the connection that we need.
- Okay.
To set up Milo, every set up is a little bit different
because it depends on the size of your space,
where your WiFi has to go through,
what kind of obstacles you may have in your home
as well as where your router is located.
So, here's how Milo's going to solve that problem.
So, we're in your kitchen.
Here's your router.
I can already easily see that there's an outlet right here.
I'm going to suggest that we put our base unit
for the Milo right here.
- Okay, sounds good.
- Okay, it's got no obstacles, no walls to get through.
So, when you set up Milo, you want to start with your
base unit over by where your router is located
about 15 or 20 feet away.
Then what we're going to do is we're going to put our
points towards your office and upstairs,
kind of like breadcrumbs to get where we want the WiFi to go.
So, I would probably put one there up in the hallway
and then I think she's going to be able to have
coverage throughout the entire house.
Now, before we get started we have a little bit of a
check list we have to run through.
Do you have existing Internet service?
- Of course.
- All right, check.
Do you have a router or a modem with WiFi?
- We do.
- All right, check.
You have Apple or Andriod tablet or smartphone?
- [Janet] Both.
- Okay, we're ready to roll.
This is the base unit and this is the unit that needs
to be about 15 to 20 feet away from your router
that has your WiFi.
I'm going to go ahead and plug it in.
So, it's going to take a few minutes,
the lights are going to flash and then what we're looking for
is two solid green lights and that shows us that we go
really good WiFi strength.
So, in the meantime, while it's booting up,
go grab your iPad and then we're going to walk through the
app and I'll show how absolutely easy it is
to set it all up.
Milo Wifi is also great for small businesses.
We have a couple of bundle options.
So you have the single option, then the two-pack
and then the three-pack.
You can actually have up to eight Milos.
- Okay, so I have my iPad.
So show me.
- All right, so first we're going to hit set up Milo.
- [Stephanie] Great.
- Perfect.
Now we're using the three-pack
because we've got the base here and we want to extend
the WiFi into two different areas.
So, press the three-pack.
Next.
Perfect.
We've got all the stuff that came in the box.
Perfect.
Okay, we've got it plugged in.
Yes, next.
All right, now let's check the lights.
Two green lights, that's great.
That means you have got a really strong signal.
If you have question that you can't find on the app,
all you have to do is call Tech Support.
They are a great team, they are super helpful,
they'll stay on the phone with you as long as you need
to set it up, they'll troubleshoot any
problem that you have and they are located at
the Milo Headquarters in the United States.
Now, we're going to connect Milo to your existing network.
And that's it.
- This is my office right here.
- It's a great space.
- Thanks.
- I see an outlet right by your desk.
Great, we will plug that in.
And now, since we already set up the base unit,
that's all we have to do.
We don't even have to get back on the app again.
It's going to talk to the base, the base is going
to talk to this.
It's going to boot up and once we get two green lights,
we know we're good to go.
In their hallway, they've got this great little end table.
I think that would be a really great spot
for them to put the Milo because then, that
WiFi is going to extend into both the children's rooms
and they're going to be able to have a crystal clear
picture on their camera.
I know that Janet and Chris want to be able to sit outside
in their beautiful patio and have their glass of wine
and relax and enjoy but also know that the baby
and Chase are safe and sound and all tucked in.
- [Announcer] Now that Janet and Chris can see
that the kids are napping, it's time for them to
enjoy some adult time.
- I'm glad everything's working now
and we can just relax.
We can see Olivia on the monitor
and just listen to some music maybe.
- Yeah, it's a nice day.
It's great to be out here.
Let's get the music going.
Just enjoy some quiet time together.
- Sounds perfect.
- Cheers.
- Cheers.

- [Announcer] After retiring four years ago,
83 year old Louise Hennen enjoys the peace and solitude
of doing crossword puzzles at her home in Eustis, Florida.
But she always worries when hurricane season rolls around
that this peaceful life can be shattered.
(glass shatters) - Having been through a
tornado and hurricane, I have a great respect
and fear for any storm that is really powerful.
Well, I know when we had the last hurricane,
I went and stayed in the bathtub.
Because I was afraid of glass falling in,
you know, breaking and stuff.
So I sat in the bathroom in the bathtub
until the hurricane was over.
- [Announcer] And Louise's every homeowner's concern.
Especially if you live in a storm-prone state like Florida
with a chance of a windstorm or high energy hurricane
damaging your home and windows.
- There are many effects that any tropical storm
or hurricane can have on your home.
Anything from flood damage to flying debris
can be costly and devastating.
Homeowners have the options of boarding up their windows
with plywood or putting in hurricane shutters
on their windows but both of those options
are labor-intensive and time-consuming so
the best alternative is to upgrade your window
to that hurricane impact- resistant window.
- [Announcer] In Louise's case, she wanted new windows
in her home to help with both energy efficiency
and an upgrade to new impact glass to prevent storm damage.
She found everything she was looking for
at her local Builders FirstSource.
- I'd done a lot of research about which company
was the most respectable and reliable
and I found out that Builders FirstSource met all
of my preferences so that's why I chose them
- Builders FirstSource is an industry leader.
We have over 400 stores nationwide,
where we have showrooms that a customer can come in,
check out the product offerings that we have in that area.
- Impact-resistant window, great for Florida.
- Homeowners should upgrade their windows just to add
value to their home.
Some want to upgrade to that energy efficient, energy
star rate window that helps out with that monthly bill.
It's a small investment with a big return.
Other homeowners may want to upgrade to that
hurricane impact-resistant window.
In the case of Louise, she wants to upgrade
to the impact-resistant window but she's also
concerned about energy and at Builders FirstSource,
we have a window that can address both of those concerns.
- [Announcer] As one of the nation's largest suppliers
and manufacturers of building materials,
pre-fabricated components and construction services,
Builders FirstSource is a Fortune 500 company
with over 400 locations in 40 states and Alaska.
That means a wide range of products available
from a large company but also the personalized attention
at the local level.
To help customers like Louise in the actual
installation of impact windows in her home.
- So we got eight windows, two doors and a half round.
(power drilling) - At Builders FirstSource,
we are an industry leader in providing high quality
structural building products as well as outstanding
customer service.
When a builder or homeowner like Louise
wants to purchase products such as windows,
we have an expert associate that will work with them
on what their needs are and help guide them
in the direction they want to go.
When we install a product, we have experienced
project managers that will supervise
our professional installers and in most
cases, installation is wrapped up in a couple of days.
At Builders FirstSource, we're driven to provide
high-quality building products and outstanding
installation services to home-builders and
remodelers across the country.
- [Announcer] With installation of new impact windows
complete, it means an energy-efficient home
and one less worry for Louise as the hurricane season begins.
And that means more time she can think about
solving those crossword puzzles.
- I certainly feel more secure but no, I don't want to
test them for a hurricane but I'm sure that I
will be safer, you know and more secure
with these windows.
