It's becoming more difficult to find suitable mounting points for license plates on the

front of new cars.

Case in point: the 2019 Chevrolet Cruze sedan and hatchback, which follow the big-grille

trend, expanding it further into the bumper.

The new grille also sports a curvaceous and highly textured structure that looks too pretty

to obscure with a plate.

The new front styling more or less parallels the one on the also revised 2019 Malibu and

is the most obvious change to the 2019 Cruze.

Other changes for 2019 don't fuss with this compact's successful visual formula, which

has been in place since this generation debuted for 2016.

Mildly reworked headlights, taillights (LEDs on the top Premier trim), and wheel designs

will be tougher to spot.

The RS package now borrows the black window surrounds, badges, and alloy wheels from the

Redline package.

Inside is Chevrolet's new Infotainment 3 system, which is a reskinned version of Cadillac's

latest version of CUE.

It's controlled by a 7.0-inch touchscreen that also responds to swiping gestures and

is standard across the line.

Higher trims with navigation can store and load user profiles from the cloud, allowing

transfer of a driver's home screen, audio presets, saved destinations, and contacts

into any compatible Chevy.

Wireless software updates and live traffic are also included.

Elsewhere, the interior design is carryover, save for a new brown leatherette on the Premier

and additional black trim on all models.

Chevrolet also is a little more generous with equipment.

The Premier now adds automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection to the suite of

driver assists (most of which aren't available on lesser models) and standard automatic climate

control.

Remote start is now standard on the LT, and a heated steering wheel is a new option.

The two engines and three transmissions stay the same.

The turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four with 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque can

be had with a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and Chevrolet is estimating

its fuel economy as up to 40 mpg highway for the sedan, 38 mpg for the hatchback.

The 137-hp 1.6-liter turbo-diesel with its sturdy 240 lb-ft is expected to offer even

better fuel economy: When equipped with the six-speed manual, Chevy estimates up to 52

mpg highway, or 47 mpg with the diesel-exclusive nine-speed automatic.

Expect the first 2019 Cruze models on sale by the fall.

In states like Michigan where front license plates aren't required, they'll look even

better.

2019 CHEVROLET CRUZE, CHEVY SPARK GET MIDCYCLE REFRESH - Duration: 4:14.

In addition to the updated Malibu, GM has unveiled refreshed versions of the 2019 Chevrolet

Cruze and 2019 Chevrolet Spark, touting that the trio ushers in "the restyled face of

Chevy cars."

2019 Chevrolet Cruze Like the Malibu, the Cruze gets a new grille

and front fascia for 2019.

The changes are subtle, but the upper and lower grilles are now wider with different

horizontal slats.

The headlights, though similar to last year's lamps, have been redesigned with new LED piping.

Chevy also added LED accents to the taillights on the Premier trim.

The Cruze can still be had as either a sedan or hatchback, a body style Chevy says accounted

for 20 percent of all Cruze sales in 2017, the hatch's first full year of production.

Also new for 2019 is a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen running the latest Chevrolet Infotainment

3 system.

LT and Premier models now get automatic climate control and remote start standard, and RS

models receive black window trim, black emblems, and black 17-inch machined alloy wheels.

New wheel designs are available across the lineup, and a new Umber interior color joins

the list of available color schemes.

The Cruze's turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 will carry over making the same 153 hp and 177

lb-ft of torque, as will its available 1.6-liter turbodiesel I-4 that makes 137 hp and 240

lb-ft.

The gas engine continues to be available paired with either a six-speed manual or nine-speed

automatic transmission, while the diesel gets either a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto.

2019 Chevrolet Spark The Subcompact 2019 Chevrolet Spark's face-lift

is a bit more obvious compared to the Cruze, as the grille and lower front valance have

been completely redesigned with a chrome frame that connects both intake openings.

The headlights have also been upgraded with available projector-style lamps, while the

available LED daytime running lights have been moved down.

In back, the the Spark gets dual-element taillights to bring it in line with the rest of the refreshed

Chevy car lineup.

The available Driver Confidence Package gains a new Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking

feature that can automatically apply the brakes if a collision is imminent at speeds between

5-37 mph.

Other new features include a standard Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with Apple CarPlay and

Android Auto, two illuminated USB ports, and True White interior lighting.

The 2019 Spark also gets new wheel designs and adds Orange Burst Metallic, Caribbean

Blue Metallic, Raspberry, and Passion Fruit to its list of available colors.

A 98-hp, 94-lb-ft naturally aspirated 1.4-liter I-4 continues to be the only engine option,

paired to either a five-speed manual or CVT.

Both cars go on sale later this year, and pricing will be announced at a later date.

Though the Cruze and Spark receive updates to keep them fresh for the next couple years,

the Sonic subcompact may not be so lucky.

The Wall Street Journal reports that GM will end production of the Sonic as early as this

year due to U.S. consumer tastes shifting away from small cars toward SUVs and crossovers.

Will the Cruze and Spark live to see another generation in this market?

Only time will tell.

2019 Chevrolet Spark Puts On Dressier Clothes, Remains a Tiny Subcompact - Duration: 3:26.

Among the smallest, least expensive new cars for sale in America, the Chevrolet Spark sub-subcompact

is being given a mild update for the 2019 model year.

It's due for one, at least based on the progression of time alone: We are coming up

on the industry standard three-year refresh cycle, since Chevrolet last redesigned the

Spark fully for 2016.

Unlike that redesign, in which Chevrolet bragged that it had increased the Spark's 1.4-liter

four-cylinder engine output by 17 percent, to 98 horsepower—such a "huge" gain

is what happens when the car you're replacing made only 84 horsepower—there are no mechanical

changes to speak of in store for the 2019 model.

Your two transmission choices remain a five-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic

(CVT).

Peer closely at the latest Spark's front end, and you might notice that the grille

shape is slightly different, as are the shapes of the two outboard intakes in the bumper.

Chevrolet would like you to take notice of the "rich use of chrome in the grille."

The extra dash of flash, which looks a bit like a shiny nose ring poking through the

septum, does nothing to convince onlookers that the Spark is anything but an affordable,

tiny thing.

Ditto the (not standard) LED running lamps, which sit lower than before to give the Spark

what Chevrolet bills as "a more powerful presence."

As we've already covered, this 98-hp hatchback is neither powerful nor, at just under 12

feet from snout to bushy tail, overflowing with presence.

What the Spark is chock full of is value, along with surprisingly adroit road manners

(acceleration aside).

As before, it comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen packing Apple CarPlay and Android

Auto phone integration, a built-in 4G LTE data connection powering a Wi-Fi hotspot,

Bluetooth, 10 airbags, and a backup camera.

And did we mention that, for 2018, all of this could be purchased for just $13,925?

Pricing for the 2019 model is forthcoming, but we do know that the Spark will again be

available in LS, LT, and 2LT guises; the pseudo-crossover Activ model returns as well, with plastic

body cladding and a 0.2-inch-taller ride height than regular Sparks.

Newly available as part of the Drive Confidence package, which last year included forward-collision

warning and lane-departure warning, is an automated emergency braking feature.

In the event the Spark thinks you're about to ignite a crash, it will apply the brakes

for you or augment the driver's braking inputs to avoid or minimize a collision.

Speaking of braking, that's it for the 2019 Spark's updates, so we'll stop this report

here.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Adds RS Model, Gets New CVT - Duration: 3:02.

Chevrolet is rolling out a slew of updates to the Malibu mid-size sedan for 2019.

The changes touch not only the exterior and interior appearance but also some mechanicals

and infotainment offerings.

There's also a new RS trim level that finally gives Chevy an equivalent to Honda's Accord

Sport and Toyota's Camry SE and XSE models.

Perhaps the most significant of these revisions is a transmission swap for the base turbocharged

1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that ditches the old six-speed automatic transmission in

favor of a new continuously variable automatic.

(Chevy's only other CVT in a nonhybrid application is found in the diminutive Spark city car.)

Presumably the new transmission is an effort to improve the model's EPA fuel-economy

ratings, which currently stand at 27 mpg city, 36 highway, and 30 combined, putting the Malibu

behind several of its newer competitors.

The gasoline-electric drivetrain in the Malibu hybrid, as well as the 2.0-liter turbocharged

four-cylinder and nine-speed automatic combo found in the range-topping Malibu Premier,

are unchanged.

The new RS trim level, which sits between the LS and the LT in the lineup, is offered

only with the 1.5-liter engine and the CVT.

It's not much more than an appearance package that essentially replaces the outgoing car's

Sport package, bringing different 18-inch wheels, black trim for the badges and grille,

a spoiler, and dual exhaust tips.

All 2019 Malibus also get a freshened face with a revised grille and headlights, while

the rear benefits from updated taillights and a different rear bumper.

The 16-, 17-, and 18-inch wheels' designs are new, too.

Interior changes mostly amount to new standard and optional features, although there are

new upholstery colors available.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet's new Infotainment 3 software is now standard,

replacing the previous 7.0-inch unit.

Heated rear seats are now standard on the Premier model, and the base L now gets a backup

camera.

The updated Malibu will be on sale in the fall.

The RS is expected to come in around $25,000, while pricing for the rest of the lineup will

likely hew closely to

the 2018 model's.
