Questions and Answers Part 2

Oh! Are you going to remove the original shipping container floor?

Because there's chemicals on it.

We are gonna put like a aluminum.

First aluminium foil and then we're gonna put a hardwood on top.

So, that means that we won't have any contact with the floor. So I don't think is gonna be a problem.

Where's the location of the house and how is the weather?

So the location...

Hot today.

The location is in southern Brazil.

And today is really hot.

It was not supposed to be. Summer is over. But still... I don't know why it's just so...

It seems like this summer never ends.

So we live in a small island.

Not that small, it's like 500,000 people, in the south of Brazil called Florianópolis.

If you want to locate it you just get the Brazilian map.

You know the Brazilian map... I need to flip, so it's like.

Here.

No, no, no. It's not here.

They are gonna see in the wrong side.

So, Brazilian map is like this.

If you go to the south the only island it's gonna show in the big map is Florianópolis.

So that's where we live.

But that's not an island that you just arrive here with a boat.

Yeah. We have cars, we have 3. 2 bridges, one is just falling apart.

So we have 2 main bridge that connects us to the continent.

So, right now we are living on the continent. So we come and go back every day.

But the house is right next to downtown Florianópolis.

So it's the top of the hill downtown that you can see the ocean and you can see the city.

And the weather is like... nowadays it's like 30 degrees during... Celsius.

Yeah. Summer goes from 23 to 35 Celsius.

Winter from let's say sometimes 8 sometimes 5, but it's not normal.

Usually it's 13 to 17 on winter. So it's not that cold it's not that hot.

It's pretty good.

How much weight did you guys lose?

Well, I mean we lost some weight I guess. But we didn't weight ourselves.

I think I would say like two kilos maybe.

Maybe more. I guess I've lost more.

Yeah. I might lost 3 kilos.

Her pants are really loose now. I mean, it used to be tight. But...

Yeah. I guess ...

We are working on the sun. So we lose a lot of ...

And we are getting stronger.

a lot of water off. But... Yeah, I mean I think we eat less when we work more.

Because...

We don't have too much hungry.

When it's too hot we don't feel like eating too much.

But we are eating good, enough. We don't need more than that.

That's yours now.

About that someone asked about how we eat here.

Because we arrive here usually 10 AM.

In the morning.

And usually we bring food.

Yeah. We have a microwave on the office down the land. So we just heat it on the microwave.

And sometimes we eat at her mom's house, sometimes we go to my dad's house, in my mom's house.

That is just downtown.

Oh. That's another question. That answered the other question.

How can we afford it?

The reason why...

One of the reasons we are doing this in Brazil and one of the reasons we came back to Brazil to do this

is because we were in Australia before this and in Indonesia in New Zealand....

The reason why we came back, one of the reasons is because here is much cheaper for us.

I mean of course you know the land we didn't need to pay for the land and we have family here.

So that means that every time we go to her mom's house or to my dad's house or to my mom's house to eat lunch

they love we're visiting them and we save money.

So it's good for both sides. Like for everything you know like... so....

Basically we save a lot of money eating at our family's house.

Thank you, family!

It's really helpful.

So. Do you plan to paint the shipping container?

Yeah. We talked about that already. We are planning to paint with gray. Darker than this one.

I don't know if they can see there.

Yeah. Dark gray. And people are concerned about the...

container getting hot because it's dark gray.

So basically are gonna.. everywhere the sun is facing towards the shipping container all the long

we are gonna have like wooden stripes in front of the gray.

So we have... we can build a shade on the shipping container.

So the plan is not to get sun direct to the ...

And on the east wall we just... we are changing our minds.

Instead of wood.

This week.

Yeah. That was like 3 days ago.

We keep changing what we think, but...

So we might do a vertical garden.

So we are gonna plant some like greens...

Climbing plants.

So, we're gonna have like climbing plant wall on the east side, that is really hot on the morning.

I guess it's gonna be good.

It's my turn.

Yeah. But we need to be quicker, because we have a lot.

Do you ever get frustrated? Do you have...

Do you ever get...

Dam...

I need some water. My mouth is getting tired.

Do you ever get frustrated when building?

Frustraded...

Well it's tough to say no.

We do get a little bit frustrated but not for too long.

The thing is we don't have time to get frustrated.

Because we need to keep moving.

Because Monday is always running after us.

So basically we are always late for the Monday's video and as the youtube channel is one of our big goals

we don't actually get time to get frustrated. We get excited.

Because if we have a problem that means we have more videos to talk about.

And we actually... that's when we learn more is when we get things wrong and you need to fix mistakes.

So we get frustrated... frustrated but it doesn't take for too long.

it's really quick and then we need to move on and fix it.

Because if we you know...

Nobody will fix it for us.

Yeah. If we lose time thinking about getting frustrating it's just like... I mean it's not gonna fix anything.

So we just need to keep working and you know.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. That's the thing.

When do you plan to finish the house?

Tough one.

Plan is one thing and what we want...

The original plan was to finish it by July.

You can tell that's not gonna happen.

For sure.

Next plan is by...

December? Maybe.

January first of 2019.

No maybe I mean...

As soon as possible.

I mean. We probably are gonna move in we finish it a 100%.

So small details you're gonna do when we are in already.

Lke the external deck we might do when we are leaving in already.

The lights.

So, hopefully by New Year's we can be here already and we can spend New Year's on the house.

That's the goal, but I don't know if it's possible.

At least on the deck.

Yeah. We'll see it.

Uhh.

Someone asked that yesterday actually.

A lot of people ask but someone mentioned that yesterday again.

Why English if you guys are in Brazil?

Well, I know Brazil is a big country.

We have more than 220 thousand...

207 million people.

Not thousand, million people.

But I know the channel... we have a big enough country to have a channel only in Brazil.

But I don't think it's fun to you know meet only people from here.

We just want to meet people from all over, from different countries.

And there are a lot of people interested on what we're doing in so many different countries.

If you see the list of countries that watch the videos is just amazing.

I mean we never expected that many people from that many countries would watch what we do.

There is even countries that we've never heard about.

Sometimes we see countries that we've never heard about.

And that's really cool.

One of the fun parts...

We're not doing the YouTube channel because we want to make money out of it.

I mean of course we do need to make some money to live

if we don't want to have an extra job and if we want to work full-time on the channel.

But the main goal is not to get rich with the channel.

And the main goal I think is to meet people from all over, from so many different countries.

We now... it just I don't know... we have contacts like I don't know.

The other day someone from Kenya Africa asked if we want to go help in a shipping container house next year.

So that's something really really really cool.

And people from New Zealand, from the States, from France, from I don't know you name it.

So many different countries and that's the main...

Yeah I mean... and that's probably the main reason we do it in English.

Of course I think we can grow much more and we can reach much more people if we do in English.

Because it's just I don't know it's probably....

It's worldwide.

Yeah. It's like one of the main languages....

Like that most of people like...

If they don't speak as first language usually the second language is gonna be English.

And we have the subtitles in Portuguese.

Yeah. And now actually we have... I don't know if you know but we have Spanish subtitles actually.

So now we have Portuguese, English and Spanish subtitles.

So that I mean... English and Spanish together you can reach like so many people.

Next question.

It's yours.

It's mine?

Yep. But now I choose it for you.

Are you going to build all the furniture?

Yes.

Yep. We are gonna build the whole thing, all the furnitures.

So, that why we are...

We're actually excited to start building the furniture.

Yeah. That's why we're trying to finish as soon as possible the deck,

because we want to go to the furniture. We are just...

We are really excited.

How did you come up with this idea?

It was a long process.

The easiest way to understand that is to watch episode number five of first season.

I will link it. Yeah, let's link it here.

So basically...

we sat down on our hotel room, I mean house back in Indonesia in Bali,

that we spent one and a half month in the same hotel room.

And we were like: we need to come with the idea.

Like, we're running out of time we spent already like one and a half month here

and we have like I don't know like one and... two and a half to go until we go back to Brazil.

and you need to decide what to do.

For life actually.

If we go back to New Zealand, if we go back to Australia, if we go back to Brazil.

If we go to Europe.

So, we needed to decide what we wanna do.

And we got our small notebook and start writing down ideas.

We like tiny house for I don't know... since like...

Since we met.

Since we met we always talk about tiny houses.

We... I always... we not... I always talked about sailboats.

I always wanted to know how to weld, so I could build a sailboat one day.

Or I could fix a metal sailboat one day.

So basically we tried to put all the ideas together and come up with one project that combines all we like.

And we came up with the idea of the Tiny house.

So I have think... I don't know if there's another question if there is I can skip it later.

But I think there is one about that.

Why a shipping container and not you know regular tiny house?

And the reason for it is because I really wanted to learn how to weld

and that was a really good opportunity to learn...

And the other thing about this is because tiny house is made out of wood and a shipping container is steel.

And here sometimes, some parts of the year rains a lot.

And the shipping container it's already...

Yeah. The thing is like... when we... what she is trying to say is that

in the beginning of the process we had a roof already.

Even though was not the best one we had the roof.

So that means we don't need to start from scratch and rely on the weather that much.

That means that we can you know somehow have like a dry place to work.

Yeah. Because we don't have a warehouse to build inside.

And we like the ideia of a shipping container that you can transport.

I mean I even though we connected two parts we can cut it in half and we can just get a truck and transport

That's pretty cool.

Where do you live right now?

We are living actually in his aunt's house.

Yeah. When we got back from our trip we moved to my mom's house. Because our idea was

until the house is ready we won't pay for rent. That is the main goal.

So we moved to my mom's house. So basically now we live in 2 houses during the year.

Half of the year in one house, half of the year in a different house. How does that go?

So... during the summer...

During the summer ...

We are living in his mum's house.

She lives by herself, so she has a spare room for us and she loves because she likes her son in the house.

And now we are living... this week we are living with aunt's house.

We've just moved in.

Because as she has an apartment here and actually she lives in Germany.

Yeah. My aunt lives in Germany for I don't know 35 years maybe.

But now she has her own apartment here because she after years living only in Germany

now she lives like the summer here. So she spends 5 months a year here we live.

So basically she asked if we want to take care of her apartment, that is always closed.

Because she has all her stuff inside so she don't want to rent it.

So basically during the winter she goes back to Germany and we move into her apartment

and we take care for her apartment and her car and her stuff.

And then on the summer when she comes back we move back to my mom's house until we finish the house.

The thing is that his aunt's apartment is closer to the land. So, that's why we prefer...

Yeah. That's a good reason because both apartments are in the continent side of the city.

So basically they are outside and there is a lot of traffic to come in and out the island.

So my mom's house is a little bit farther.

And when we move to my aunt's apartment makes easier for us to come and go back.

It's half way.

Yeah. It's like halfway.

And we even though we live in my mom's house that doesn't mean that we don't eat at her mom's house,

and in my dad's house.

We are basically with the family now.

At my parent's house actually.

Yeah. Her parent's house.

Where are you living...

Did you already downsized in anticipation of finally move in?

We already downsizing when we went to Australia.

Yeah. Basically the downsizing started when we went to Australia.

We gave away and sold a lot of stuff.

Now we have half of our stuff.

When we move in the house we

hopefully we are gonna sell... not sell but give away more stuff and downsize a little bit more.

And one day when we move to the boat we're gonna downsize even.

So, it's like a process. We're getting there.

Are you going to ground the shipping container to protect it against lightening?

Yeah. Actually we will.

But as we are not... I mean we don't work when there's lightening right now. We didn't take care of that yet.

And there is one of... someone that watches the videos that lives in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

that's electrician like... as engineering.

Electrical Engineering. Yeah, he's a electrical engineer and he is gonna do the project for us.

He asked if we want help. So he's gonna send it soon.

Like maybe next month or something... he's gonna send it and we're gonna do that.

By the way if you have any skill and you want to help us like this friend did.

I mean, it's open...

New friend.

How about the utilities? What are your plans?

Are you going to have a solar energy?

Utilities. Let's see.

Grey water... we are right by the city grey water,

so I don't see a reason to do like a composting or anything as we are right on the grid.

We are like maybe 3 meters from the grid.

So there's no point in doing this.

Just connect there.

Water.

Water...

It's right there.

We have a .... how can I say it?

We have like a underground water and we have a pump, that is been here even before my dad had the land.

So, that's like I don't know 40, 50 years.

And the water is really clean and really good.

So basically gonna have straight from the land the water.

And electricity...

We are right by the grid. So we are...

Yeah. About the solar energy we did some research about that, we saw the prices, it's really expensive.

And we need to have batteries to...

We might have in the future a small part of the house on solar.

So that means like a few plugs on solar. So we can maybe have like our editing studios, solar editing studio.

But for the main thing is gonna be on grid.

We will see. But for now we're gonna use the grid and we're gonna use some solar in the future

probably just to you know...

Maybe for the shower as well.

It's the noise when...

Is the noise when raining...

No. He is asking about...

because we have a metallic roof and someone wants to know if it's too noisy when rains.

Like the you know the water hitting the roof.

But we have EPS underneath. So...

No, it's not.

It's really good.

And he's asking if the temperature inside the shipping container have changed with the EPS and the roof.

Yeah.

A lot.

It works a lot.

Like... it's much much better.

How do you say that?

I aprove it.

I think everyone should use it. It's pretty good.

How did you meat each other?

Meat?

No, it's...

How did you meet each other?

We actually have a comum friend.

Yeah. We met through a comum friend when we went to the beach actually.

A group of friends were going... meeting to go to the beach on the summer (it was not summer).

11 no. Almost 12.

So basically we... I saw her and I... mmm

And here we are... almost 12 years *later. Since that day.

That was a long time.

How long?

How long we have been together?

We've been together for almost 12 years. October...

September of...

October.

We met in September and we started dating in October.

So, October 21st is gonna be 12 years.

And we've been living together for...

8 years.

Almost 8 years now.

It is 8 years.

It is 8 years already? Yeah. So we've been living together for 8 years now.

That is a long time.

How many kids do you plan to have? How are they going to fit in the house?

That is a tricky question.

At least one or two kids.

Not more than that because...

Not more than that. Yeah, we used to want more kids, but 2 is enough.

Yeah. I think 2 is enough.

And how we are gonna fit them? 1 or 2 in the shipping container?

One is fine.

We have a secret plan to build a secret room on the top of the dining table.

But we will find a way.

I mean if we don't find a way when they grow up...

I mean when they grow up we're gonna be on the boat already so it doesn't matter.

Or if we are not in the boat we can put a extra one on the top or we can build a shed for him.

There is always a way.

I always say that my kid is gonna live in the tiny house with us until he is 12.

And then he's gonna build his own tiny house. I might let him use our tools.

I might help some but he's build it mostly by himself.

So it's like until 12.

How many hours a week do you guys work on the house?

I mean... we work on this whole project, I mean for project YouTube channel, building, Instagram, everything

we work seven days a week and 24/7. It's basically since we wake up until we go to bed.

The only time you take a break it's in between when we are really tired editing

we take like an hour off to watch a series or to watch another YouTube's videos.

You know it's just like research as we work with watch another YouTube's videos.

But usually we arrive here around 10 because of the traffic.

Before that the traffic is terrible terrible.

When it's not raining.

When it's not raining.

When it's raining we go to stores.

It varies a lot.

Yeah. It varies a lot.

If it's raining we don't work here, we work at home editing or we go to stores to buy supplies.

When we have like a good weather and it's not too hot

sometimes we work from I don't know 10in the morning until 9:00 at night.

Sometimes even like 10:00 at night we've done before.

If it's too hot we cannot... it's just really hard to work outside for like I don't know 10 hours.

So we work a little bit less. But I don't know.

How many hours? It's really really hard to say. I would say at least 40 hours.

*Per week.

*Per week. Plus like 40 or 50 hours on extras: stores, editing and I don't know.

But it's full-time. We are... if you're not working on this we are thinking and trying to have ideas for that.

Solutions.

What are you going to do with all the machines you have after the building?

Well, after the building we either gonna...

Sell some.

Sell some.

What we are not... the bigger ones.

Or we are gonna build a shed to have like a workshop.

Or we are going to build a troller to put in the back of the car with all the tools, like a portable workshop.

Or we might go to the sailboat and use them to fix the sailboat.

I don't know or if everything change we're gonna sell everything.

But for now I think we're going to build a troller with all the equipment

and then we can take to the place to fix the sailboat you know ....

We will get there. But I think we are gonna hold them for a little longer.

We still have some stuff we want to build.

How much did you spend until now?

We did a video *3 weeks ago about that.

And actually yesterday you bought another equipment.

Yeah, I spent maybe US$500 yesterday.

I've just bought a table saw, because we're going to start the inside and we really need the table saw.

It's around 10 thousand we said.

Now it's around 9 and a half, 10 thousand dollars.

No no. It's like nine and a half... with equipment it's a little bit more.

It's like 15 thousand, 14.

So, it's like without equipment ten thousand dollars with equipment 15 thousand dollars.

Something like that.

Why a shipping container and not a regular tiny house? We've answered already.

We have only 2 questions.

Last 2.

Are you gonna leave the exterior of the shipping container as it is?

I think we answered already.

We are gonna have...

We just have the last question.

... a green wall and we are gonna have like wood.

Which welding machine are you...

It's not like a question.

So. Which kind of welding machine do you use? And... do you use the same saw for wood and for metal?

Basically equipments questions are all in the video... we talked about that already.

So we have a full 35 minutes video about all the equipments we use

and why we use and what we think about them. So. You just watch there.

So basically that's it. I think it's way too long already.

Yeah. For sure.

Hopefully you like it. Hopefully you know us a little bit better now.

If you have any question...

Oh! There is something that we didn't talk about.

We have a website, that is called oddlifecrafting.com

Some of the questions like we talked about the University in Sydney

and the reason why I dropped out of the master degree and all sorts of questions.

We have posts, blog posts on the site. We never talked about because we just didn't have any time for.

Because I'm still putting the posts. I'm still doing the posts.

So basically if you're curious to know more in-depth things about the trip we had

and the master degree and all sorts of stuff you can go to www.oddlifecrafting.com

and you'll find there the link for all the videos and some pictures, some extra pictures and all the you know...

the details about it.

Yeah. There is more details about the building as well.

If you like what we are doing.

If you want somehow to become a part of it. You can go to Patreon.

We are not gonna talk in-depth about Patreon yet. We are gonna explain about that in a future video.

Maybe in 2 or 3 weeks.

Yeah. I think next month we are gonna talk about Patreon.

But there is a link for Patreon down below and that's a way for you guys to become even ...

have a even closer relationship to us and you know become part of the ideas we are building

and you know start ...

a closer relationship.

Yeah. To start building our projects with us somehow.

And I think that's it, right?

Well, I hope we have answered all the questions. If we didn't just leave a comment below.

And we are glad to answer all of them.

Yep. Just 2 more things.

We want to thank 2 special persons today.

One it's our first Patreon ever.

And that's really cool.

We woke up today and we were just checking out the emails and she was like:

Oh! We have a Patreon, we have a Patreon!

Really excited.

Wow! That's so cool how someone that have never met before, that we don't really know.

His name is hard to pronounce.

Sorry for mispronouncing.

It's Aeesixem Nett I guess.

I'll gonna just write his name so we make sure you know .

We are really really excited and we really want to thank you for believing in our project

believing on our dream.

And that makes a huge difference for us.

The second one is actually... because I have a few channels that I watch everyday.

She is like: you just keep watching all the channels.

I mean...

The reason why we have a YouTube channel is because we also like to watch others YouTube channels.

They inspire us.

Yeah. This is just like a inspiration.

And one of them is a guy that it had has been fixing an old steel sailboat.

I mean, when I mean fixing is he is bringing back to life.

If you see pictures of the boat as it used to be.

It used be really really bad. I think it was in a fire before the boat

and he is just bringing the boat back to life and that's gonna be his home his future home.

And that's really really cool! His name is Rhys from Frantic Sailing Adventures.

That's... I'm gonna link in the end... I'm gonna link his channel.

And it's just really really cool. And I mean it's just an inspiration to see him fixing this boat.

Because as you guys know I really want to fix a boat also.

So, it's like just a source of learning and a source of you know keeping the dream alive.

Thanks a lot, Rhys for just making us happy every week.

And I guess we see you guys...

Next week when we finally are gonna finish the wooden deck.

Yeah. We forgot to talk abou that.

You guys, don't worry. Next week we're gonna go back to the building videos.

These last 2 weeks was just... we needed time to finish the wooden deck.

So we needed to do something to you know give us some time.

Because we are tired of showing like half, half, half, half of the process.

And never getting it done.

And by next week hopefully we are gonna have this wooden deck done.

So these are all the wood for the...

The pieces for the soffit.

All the fascia boards are on place already.

And now we have only to install these soffits.

That we're gonna finish painting today. We're going to install it... starting tomorrow.

And have like maybe 2 or 3 days installing all this.

And by next week we're gonna have a whole deck.

And then we can finally finally start working on something else.

That's a surprise.

So. See you guys

next week.

It's funny. I always say that we are building actually a sailboat on the land without a sail.

So if you want to check out a real steel sailboat just go to Rhys' channel.

You're gonna have fun. It's just amazing the job he's doing.

And really soon he's gonna have like a brand new sailboat that used to be a burnt down

I don't know 34 years sailboat.

So check it out.

See you guys next week.
