- If you're into drifting, and ya should be,

you've probably heard of the 240SX from Nissan.

Maybe you've even heard specifics, like mentions of the S13,

S14, and the beautiful strawberry faced

S15 models.

So you're probably thinking "what the heck are they

even mean, James?"

The S-chassi started out in life as the underpinnings

of affordable alternatives to larger and more powerful

rear wheel drive sports cards.

Not only have countless stories been made with these cars,

entire careers have been launched

using the humble S-chassi.

This is everything you need to know to get up to speed

on the Nissan Silvia

240SX,

200SX,

180SX,

S-chassi.

If somehow you live inside of a rock and you haven't

heard of these cars, the formula was pretty simple.

The company used these S abbreviations to signify the

development of their small rear wheeled drive car line

with S being derived from the name of the model in Japan,

Silvia. The numbers represent which generation it was.

240SX and the S-chassi story begins in 1976

with a car that nobody really remembers.

While Nissan had a small-ish sports car in their Z car,

that car was becoming more expensive each year.

So they made just what the needed, the S10, created to

be the cheaper lighter car that Nissan wanted

and the rest of the world needed.

The first S-chassi was born, equipped with a 1.8 liter

engine everywhere else and sold as Silvias,

American S10's were sold as a larger two liter engine

and badged as just 200SX's.

While Paul Newman had raced the earlier S10,

the S110 received much more factory attention, gaining fame

in a number of racing leagues. The two most famous of these

racing S110's couldn't really have been more different

from each other, the group B 240RS and the Japan only

super silhouette racers. We all know how crazy group B was

while it existed, all wheel drive and spectators risking

everything just to get closer to the cars.

Nissan's entry into the series, the 240RS, was not really

any of these.

Still they had to make 200 road going versions of the 240RS

for homologation rules, and thus grace the worlds

roads with a badass, rally bred, box flared creation.

The other racing S10, the super silhouette racers built for

the Japanese only racing series, was insanely powerful.

They made more power from their tuned, turbo charged, two

liter, four cylinder than the formula one cars of the day.

To handle this power, the company utilized some

pretty extreme arrow.

Surprisingly, this car and others like it, which only raced

for four years, spawned an entire subculture of its own,

the insane bosozoku culture in Japan.

Nissan got rid of their S110 platform in 1984 and released

the new S12 chassi. The S12 introduced the most important

development in S-chassi history, pop-up headlights.

In all seriousness, the S12 generation was when Nissan

started getting their act together and started to focus

on the sport part of their affordable sport coupe.

The S12 was available from the very first day

with a turbo charged engine, even in North America,

that's right.

Nissan sold...

a turbo...

S-chassi car here,

and you little idiots forgot about it.

(bell rings)

Nissan pulled the plug on turbo chargers in 1987 for the US

and instead introduced the new 200SX sports edition.

This car featured a unique trait among

factory S-chessi cars, a V6.

Nissan killed the S12 in 1989 and introduced the car

that cemented the S-chassi into history,

the S13, ya ever heard of it?

(tires screech)

America received both a coupe and lift-back version

of the S13 and gained its name from the 2.4 liter,

four cylinder, KA24 engine used in US cars,

producing a whopping 140 horsepower, and coming from a truck

this engine would weigh down the S13 in America

from day one.

- I mean was it heavy? Did it achieve total heavy-acity?

- Despite this lack of motivation from the power plant,

this engine in one form or another, would be the only engine

on offer for the rest of S-chassi's life in the US.

Meanwhile,

over in the rest...

of the entire freakin' world,

the SR20 would soon be hitting the roads and the S13

with over 200 turbo charged horsepowers.

This engine would turn out to be a tuners wet dream,

easily capable of handling 350 horsepower

with only minor modifiocations. This power combined with the

classic S-chassi formula: three wheel drive, lightweight

and affordable, would turn the S13 into a star in the new

and growing sport of drifting.

Pretty soon, Japanese underground drift stars were

customizing their S13s in ways never before thought of.

This would lay the foundation of drift culture

as we know it.

(engine revs)

Late 1993 would see the introduction of the S14 Silvia

in Japan, with the rest of the world receiving it in 1994.

The car became wider, lower and had a longer wheel base,

making drifitng even easier. Styling can be divided between

two distinct non pop-up headlight periods.

The earlier Zenki cards produced from 1994 to '96

and the more aggressive Kouki cars from '96 until the S15

was introduced in '99. America's S14 still had to soldier

on with a mildly updated K24 engine, while the rest of the

freakin' world still got the SR20DET.

Nissan reported 75% of 240SX customers

in America were women.

(country accent) I wouldn't mind meeting the type o' gal

that bought a 240 SX new.

(normal) The final generation of the S-chassi, the S15,

was introudced in 1999 and only lasted three short years.

Sold only in Japan, Australia and New Zealand,

this car was slightly smaller than the S14, and was powered

by the last and greasted SR20 offered from the factory.

The S15 is the forbidden fruit of the model line

to Americans, as they will be illegal to import and drive

on the streets until 2024. Popular S-chassi models carry

a sizeable increase over their market value, a phenomenon

better known as the Drift Tax. Despite this increased cost,

Nissan's S-chassi has become a culture of its own.

This same fan base has been clamoring for Nissan to build

an S16 Silvia. Nissan was said repeatedly that the market

just doesn't exist, and a better way to reach enthusiasts

was through trendy and hip vehicles like the...

Ya know and Nissan owns Mitsubishi now, so they're the guys

who made the Eclipse. However, recent rumors are that Nissan

🇸🇪 Old Swede: Nissan 370Z Stillen Supercharger Tunethrough / Part 4: Result is 426 HP! - Duration: 11:28.

The 4th part of our series - finally! Many of you asked about it and

we're presenting you the last part of this video series.

The supercharger kit was installed and what we like to do now:

We show you the supercharger kit and how the intercooling works.

This is a different and special system, so it's not like

it's used for other turbo systems or supercharger kits and

after that, we show you how the car runs and

make a 100-200 kph run and later we're analyzing the

result of the dyno.

Let's see the spec list of this car first.

We installed the smallest supercharger kit here, what's available.

This is the 0.6 bar kit, but there are no mods

done. That means that we don't have any headers, we

didn't tune it to speed density,

just to air mass. Because it's an automatic transmission, that

is the reason why we have an oil cooler and the engine oil cooler

built in. Our ProKats were installed additionally and

we tuned the air mass meter behaviour and not whats recommended

by Stillen. The kit is out of the box,

I would say. What we changed is using

not the Stillen injectors, but our own injectors,

because in lower speeds and idle the

engine will run more harmonic. How does the intercooling system work on this car?

You may see a thick pipe here, that's

the intake hose which is attached to the supercharger

and to the throttles and then to a big chunk here. That's the

intake manifold and if you can see this, this isn't the stock manifold anymore.

Underneath the manifold lays the intercooler.

Now you're asking yourself, why the intercooler is mounted on top of the engine?

In normal cases you have an air-to-air intercooling system,

which is being mounted at the front of the car.

In this car, we have an air to water intercooling system.

That's all about a water circulation and here you can see that we've got a water reservoir.

In this reservoir we have normal coolant liquid and this is attached to a pump,

which circulates the water through a radiator, which is mounted

at the front of the car if you will. If you track the lines you see a

water hose which goes into the intercooler.

In the intercooler cools down the air and then

is the warm water returned to the reservoir.

Back to the pump again, and then through the radiator.

That's the basic circulation, which the water runs to cool down

the compressed air. That's kind of normal that we have under the bumper

two big K&N cone filters,

which let the air in, which is

is being compressed in the supercharger, thats the reason why it gets hot,

the hot air runs through the intake hoses and through the throttles,

through the intercooler and very closely to the cylinder head it get's cooled down.

That's the special thing about this kit,

the big benefit is that you don't require much space.

You have to imagine that if you use a classical air intercooling system,

you got big tubes which you have to install and with this kit you

got relatively small hoses which you have to install.

It's not as effective as a classical air to air intercooler, but we don't have enough

space for it. In theory we have to take compromises,

like removing the A/C compressor, and other things.

We don't want to remove something,

but we have a huge amount of coolers in there. The transmission cooler,

the engine oil cooler, the water radiator for the intercooler,

the A/C radiator, the servo radiator, so

that's a huge amount of radiators.

If you would install a classical air intercooler, which are 50mm thick

and the width is like the opening of the bumper,

that takes a lot of space which you don't have.

We now take a listen how this kit sounds.

Let me get in!

OK, we're on the Autobahn and will verify everything now.

We did that before,

and we tested a 100-200 kph run.

We will now introduce the final 100-200 kph time.

Be curious, I did a run by myself this morning,

the time I'll tell you later, now we're 2 persons in here,

in this heavy convertible and now we're starting a run.

You saw that we're at a very good

11,3 seconds at 17°C ambient temperature.

It's getting warmer here finally.

This morning I was at 10.3 seconds alone,

the temperature and the additional weight makes a huge difference.

The charged air temperature was lower, too.

That's about it and I will now drive to the dyno!

As you saw we were on the dyno.

I want to explain the dyno chart to you right now.

The first, upper chart on this chart

is the performance at the clutch.

The lower line is the power at your wheels.

The difference between this both lines is your power loss.

The middle chart is the torque. And the lower one is

the boost chart. Unfortunately the information of our customer

were not correct that it's a 0.6 bar kit, we just saw on dyno that

this kit seems to be a 0.5 bar kit. The maximum boost is about 0.49 bar.

But nonetheless the result is exceptional.

Too bad, that we don't have the 0.6 bar kit in here,

so we could have more performance on top. We're at EG corrected

426 PS and .. hold on ... uncorrected we're at 446 PS and 377 Nm.

But in Europe and Germany we're at EG correction.

I just exported a chart for our american audience.

That's DIN 435 HP at the clutch and 387 ft lbs of torque

384 HP at the wheels at 348 ft lbs.

That's about it.

What else did we see?

Because the customer can't get 102 octane in Sweden,

we can't tune it to an aggressive ignition timing, like we

tune it for German cars. But in the other parts

of this series you saw that we were at 15.2 seconds on 100-200.

The last 100-200 run was 11.3 seconds.

We're 4 seconds faster.

I drove this morning a 10.3 run.

Thats an impressive result for this car.

The first stock performance check wasn't optimal as well,

I don't think that we were at the 328 HP mark, because we measured on dyno with

an aftermarket exhaust which was installed by the customer before just 325 HP,

and a torque of 361 Nm. That's less performance than stock,

even though we have a performance exhaust installed.

Basically we can say that the global difference is

approx. 104 HP and 100 Nm to stock.

Without the exhaust we would have a difference of approx. 110-115 HP and 120 Nm.

Very nice result in my eyes. I think Christian will have a lot of fun.

We hand out the car on Friday. That's about the "Old Swede" series,
