Replace Front Brake Pads on 1993 - 1997 Ford Ranger - Duration: 17:36.
hey folks I'm Dennis today my handsome and talented son Connor and I are going
to show you how to change the front brake pads out on a 1993 to 1997 Ford
Ranger two wheel drive with split pin calipers thanks for watching my video
let's get started first thing we have to do is safely jack up the truck put a
jack stand under it and remove the front wheel and tire
the difference in split pink calipers and a lot of other calipers is
a lot of the other ones have a bolt that are a guide pin a threaded guide pin
that goes in either through the front of the back that holds the caliper onto the
caliper bracket which keeps the brake pads on the rotor split pin calipers
there's a split pin in here and in here with a piece of rubber in between them
that applies outward force to keep the pin in place so that the caliper doesn't
move so we have to do is you got to drive these pins out they've got a
little reset or a little detent on each end to kind of hold them in place so you
have to drive them out to get the caliper off these split pins have a
little Ridge here in here that help lock them in place so that they don't slip
out so the first thing you got to do is you've got to get the ridge behind the
the lip on this caliper bracket so that the pin can actually come out squeeze
that a little bit and then give it a couple taps on your pliers to get that
Ridge behind the the lip here
like that you see where I don't know if you can see that on camera or not but
it's a little compressed now so now it can now it can take the take a drift or
a punch and get that pin the rest of the way out once you get it far enough out of
the back well then it'll come on out and you can see what I'm talking about here
at pin is split and then inside it's got a it's got a rubber section bonded to
each side that helps hold it in and then you can see these these little ridges
here then hold on to the outside of the caliper bracket and keep it from coming
out on the bottom give it a squeeze
and then tap it to wear these wear these ears get clear of the caliper bracket
like that and you always want to inspect your pins and make sure that they're not
you know coming apart or separate anything like that these look fine now I
think it's best to try to compress your caliper at least a little bit before you
pull it off you can either use a slip joint pliers water pump pliers or use
like a C clamp you can usually get them off and then
just compress it after it's off the rotor but I kind of like to compress it
just a little bit before I take it off anyway
doesn't take much right here's the the piston and you don't want to squeeze the
boot because if you squeeze the boot you're gonna tear it up that's the this
part right right here is metal you can go in with a pair of of water pump
pliers and just kind of gently you know get in get in there on the lip of the
piston and on the back of the caliper like that and just get a little bit of a
squeeze just open it up a touch in the caliper you just slide the caliper out
don't let it hang from the brake line you can you can turn and get it upside
down and then you can get to the brake pads now one of the pads didn't come out
there's the pad and there's a shim a lot of times behind these so you got to be
aware of that but that's how the pads are setting in the in the caliper and of
course they go on a rotor you want to inspect your rotor when you take the
pads off these rotors are in good shape there's no gouging they're nice and
smooth and everything's fine so we're just gonna replace the pads today see if
I can show you this there's an ear here that locks into this little ear and then
there's a clip here so all of that holds that that outer pad in place so you got
a you got a push against you got to push back against this clip and get that ear
out and then the whole thing just pops out and a lot of times you can balance
your caliper like this if you can't wire it up wrap your piece of wire around
here and tie to the coil spring or something so you can work on it but just
don't let it hang from your brake line now that you've got the pads out of
there what I always do is I take one of the old ones and I stick it in there
backwards so I've got a metal surface to press on take a pair of water pump
pliers and use that compress the compress the
caliper because you're fixing to putting new pads on here which are thicker than
the old pads so you got to leave yourself room what you want to do is
just gently apply pressure and you see how it's squeezing that caliper in
there that's got that that's got that all the way in you can see how the
piston now is in in side the caliper cylinder so now we just created a lot of
space we just went to our local parts house and got got brake pads the ones
with the clips are the outers and ones without the clips or the inners they've
got a these already came with a nice quill shim on them which is that so make
sure you don't lose that it just goes on there like so it's got a couple of ears
on it they'll keep it on the back of the pad and that'll keep that helps keep it
from squealing now you take your new pads enough the one with the clip is the
outer you don't line it up pop it in there make sure that these ears here and
here are clipped into the to the caliper
like so you gotta make sure the front and the back are clipped in that this
clip is engaged on the outside because you don't want that going anywhere just
like that so take your take your inner shoe make sure you hold your shim on
there and there's there's a there's a lip here on the bottom of the caliper
bracket and there's one right up here on the top of the caliper bracket where
this part of the brake pad slides into these these rectangular ears so what
you're gonna do is you're gonna you gonna set that in to match the curvature
of the rotor put that ear in there and then put that in there ear in there and
then it'll it'll stay put and then you're gonna slip the caliper on over
the brake pad
you're gonna this one's the outer is clipped in so it can't go anywhere make
sure you don't have your brake line in the bond and then you're gonna slip the
caliper in over top of the inner shoe or the inner pad as long as you've got the
channels lined up for your split pin then you know you're in there alright so
basically like that yep then you take your split pins and you drive them in
you can drive them in from the front of the back it's easier to drive them in
from the front the way these things are made you can see that one side is smooth
this this is a side that goes toward the caliper and then there's a there's a cut
out on these ends and that goes toward the caliper bracket because you want all
of this part to catch on the caliper bracket so basically it goes you know
with the top one this goes toward the top and then with the bottom one it goes
in like that with the reset toward the bottom because it's catching on the
bracket and not the caliper itself so we're gonna take the top and we're gonna
put it in like that just like so and you can kind of set it in there by hand and
the same thing with the bottom or we'll take it and it's going the other way
with the recess in the bottom get it in there push it in by hand and then all we
got to do is tap them in
which once you get them driven in there far enough to where where this little
ear catches that little ear that's that's on the end of this split pin
it'll catch up against the caliper bracket here you won't be able to drive
it anymore so that's why it was so much easier to just drive them in with the
hammer you basically just tap them in until
that that stop hits here and then it can't go anymore then the same thing
with the bottom so then we're done with that other than pumping up the brakes we
just got to do the other side
make sure you yeah make sure you metal the metal yeah they don't take much just
enough to loosen up touch yep and then just come up
she's just slide out just make sure you don't drop it you know yeah we may be
driving the bracket doesn't help yep nope by the way go to go clockwise for
your because of your line yeah yep
or put it in there backwards yeah
then a metal the metal and then squeeze it right because that bright Pat face is
not going to tear up your piston and those pistons are kind of brittle and I
have I've seen people pry against them yeah and they chip just kind of slow and
steady you say you don't kill your master cylinder
put that one in the caliper bracket yeah
so I see exactly yeah it's a couple of years
and it just sits there right yeah slide all the way up against the rotor yep
make sure that shims in there right yes
hold on to your caliper so don't fall yeah check the ear on both front in her
top and the bottom yeah out on the end you know yeah you're gonna go
counterclockwise to really there you go
push harder
the camera tap the camera tap it Nikki going tap your bottom in a little bit
next thing we have to do is to pump up the brakes because once you've
compressed the caliper cylinders Pistons there will be a gap between the new
brake pads and the rotor so we have to pump up the brake so don't just jump in
your truck and start driving because your brake pedal is going to go to the
floor so what you do is get in you're getting your truck crank it up pump the
brakes leave it in park with the emergency brake on the parking brake on
pump your brakes they'll go all the way to the floor do that four or five times
till they feel normal and then your brakes are going to be pumped up
the last thing that you want to do is you want to kind of burn in the new
brake pads most brake pads are pre scorched anymore so it's not as critical
but I think it's always good practice to burn them in a little bit basically what
you want to do is once you've pumped up your brakes and you know that they're
fine go out get the get the truck up to somewhere between 30 and 40 miles an
hour no faster than that and put your brakes on not hard enough to lock up the
tires or anything but put your brakes on pretty hard so that you stop in a fairly
short distance do that about three times that will help burn in the face of the
brake pads so that they don't glaze over and become slick yeah it just keeps your
brakes safer and I believe that makes your brake pads last a little bit longer

When Dodge Bought Ford | WheelHouse - Duration: 10:55.
Ferrari vs. Lamborghini, Mitsubishi vs Subaru, BMW vs. Mercedes… the list goes on.
"Wait, wait.
How 'bout we settle this on the blacktop huh?"
There's about as many automotive rivalries as there are cars… and they all had to start
somewhere.
In fact, the first rivalry in American automotive history- a rivalry that's still alive today-
dates back to detroit as early as 1900.
Today on Wheelhouse we're talking about the strange origins of Dodge vs Ford.
John and Horace Dodge were born in Niles, Michigan about 200 miles west of Detroit,
a city they would help turn into an automotive Mecca.
Much like my own dad, their father was teaching them to be machinists.
Horace invented a dirt proof ball bearing and shared the patent credit with his brother.
The red-headed Dodge bros were super tight, and a had a twin-like bond despite the 4 year
age difference.
They started their own shop building bikes and automotive components, until they got
so much business building car parts that they ditched the bikes and just focused completely
on cars.
A guy named Ransom Olds employed the Dodge brothers to build engines and transmissions
for his new automobile company: Oldsmobile.
Ransom needed some good machinists to get that done, and the Dodge brothers were really,
really good machinists.
The partnership between Olds and the Dodge brothers made them pretty wealthy, but the
Dodge brothers were just getting started.
They wanted to grow their newfound money by investing in more companies.
Meanwhile, a 33 year old Henry Ford was also pursuing his passion of engineering and fabrication.
Like the Dodge brothers, Ford was born in Michigan and worked as a machinist.
And like the Dodge brothers, Ford quit his day job at the Edison Illuminating Company.
In 1896 Ford completed work of his first vehicle, the Quadricycle.
Ford opened his first business, the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899, it was the first
automaker with headquarters in Detroit.
Unfortunately, it only lasted two years.
Today, we think of Henry Ford as a marketing genius who brought cars to the masses...
But the Ford of 1899?
Not so much.
Back then Henry was an engineer, a brilliant one, the kind of engineer who forgot to tell
people to buy his cars.
The Detroit Automobile Company went belly up in a matter of months.
But Henry didn't give up.
Two years later in 1901, He built a racecar to prove his worth as a car designer. The two
cylinder racer he built set a speed record at a horse track, a feat for which Henry was
awarded $1000 cash, fame and for some reason- a punch bowl.
With his renewed street cred, Henry Ford founded the Henry Ford Company, with big investors
backing him up.
The investors wanted Henry to design a lightweight passenger car they could sell for cheap.
But Henry had caught the speed bug and got to work on a four cylinder race car to break
his old record.
The investors were like "no, that won't make us any money you weirdo," so Henry
Ford left the Henry Ford Company in 1902.
With Henry gone, the investors restructured and renamed the company to honor the founder
of Detroit: Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.
Cadillac.
So by 1903, Ford starts another company.
Despite the fact that he builds great race cars, nobody wants to give him any money,
because they think he might just blow it on race cars again.
He's going around town, looking for cash, but Detroit back then was a small place…
people talked, and the word was that if you invest in Henry Ford, you're going to lose
money.
But there were two young rich guys who didn't care what people said… and those guys were
the Dodge brothers.
They've got that Oldsmobile money burning a hole in their pocket and they want to expand...
The Dodge boys knew that Ford had his back against the wall- he was in debt, he lost
all his money leaving what was now called Cadillac, and couldn't get anybody else
to give him money for his new car company.
So the Dodge Brothers worked out a deal to give Ford $10,000 worth of cash and materials
for his new Ford Motor Company.
And in return, the Dodge brothers demanded a ten percent share of the company, AND the
rights to all of Ford's assets in case of another bankruptcy.
Effectively, the Dodge Brothers owned Ford, both the company and the man.
Work began on Henry's new cars.
Dodge supplied the chassis complete with engine and transmission, and the rest of the car
would be finished at Ford's plant.
As the Ford Motor Company grew, Henry slowly became increasingly more eccentric.
He began to think of his own body as an automobile.
He Reasoned that if his cars were designed to run off the best fuel, the same should
true for himself.
He adopted a nearly vegetarian diet, eating veggies from his garden and "roadside greens"-
roadside greens are weeds.
People thought this was kind of weird, I mean can you imagine, seeing your boss pull weeds
out from behind your building, and throw them into his salad?
I've seen Pumphrey do some weird stuff but nothing like that.
In fact…
I've never seen pumphrey eat ANY vegetable.
Except pickles of course, but are pickles vegetables?
Anyway, the Dodge brothers didn't seem to mind Ford's weird eating habits because
he was making them buttloads of money.
Plus, they were too focused on climbing Detroit's exclusive social ladder to care.
But polite detroit society didn't want them.
John and Horace were known for hanging out with their employees after hours, hitting
the bars and getting crunk next to the same people who built their engines.
This made them unsuitable for Detroit high society.
"Oh those Dodge brothers, do display most contemptible of behavior."
"Oh I agree, I agree wholeheartedly.Shall we hit the brothel down the street then?"
"Absolutely."
"Splendid."
So what do you do if you want to be high society, but they won't even let you go to the symphony?
You buy the symphony.
John and Horace Dodge assumed the financial liability of the Detroit symphony, effectively
buying their way into the Detroit elite.
Oh, you won't let us into your club?
How 'bout we just buy your club?
How you like them apples?
How 'bout you lick my apples dude!
America!
That's how we do it.
Capitalism.
Both Ford and the Dodge brothers were aspiring industrial titans, with their own strange
eccentricities: Ford with his dandelion eating ways, and the Dodge's chips on their shoulders.
Naturally, a partnership between the two would not last.
For years, the Dodge brothers had been giving Ford suggestions on how to improve the Model
T; but Henry's pride and stubborn nature got in the way of listening.
He just thought they were trying to screw him for more money.
It started to become clear that Ford was a little paranoid.
They also soon realized that Ford was prejudiced… against redheads.
Yeah… the Ginger-haired Dodge Brothers were 10% partners with a man who thought they were
evil because of their hair color.
Tired of being ignored by Henry, Dodge completed construction on a massive new facility in
1910.
Their plant featured a floor to floor assembly line, medical wing, and a machine shop called
"the Playpen" for workers to invent stuff in their spare time.
The Dodge Brothers even served beer on the assembly floor when it was hot.
Honestly, doesn't sound like a bad place to work.
By contrast, Ford had a "Sociology Department" within his company that was almost like a
secret police.
They'd show up to your house to make sure it was clean, they'd ask you about your
marriage, and made sure you weren't drinking.
Safe to say there wasn't any beer being served at the Ford Motor Company.
Ford was suspicious.
Why were those Dodge brothers building a factory to rival his own?
"Henry they're not even Irish they just have red hair."
"I don't care, I could smell them for miles."
Initially, the plant was cranking out Model T components, as the Dodge Brothers had been
doing all along.
But Henry suspected the Dodge Bros were planning to do something against him, so he preempted
their preemptive strike with a new factory for himself.
The River Rouge plant allowed Ford to rely solely on his own employees, and would be
cheaper than outsourcing his work to Dodge.
Ford might have been a weirdo, but his suspicions were correct.
The Dodge Brothers were finished with being ignored and decided they were gonna make their
own damn automobile.
In 1913 John Dodge resigned from his position of Vice President at Ford, and announced the
Dodge Brothers would stop building cars and parts for the Ford Motor Company so they could
make their own.
The Dodge Model 30 made more power than the Model T, it had an electric starter, and a
steel body.
By almost every measure it was a better car than the Model T, but about twice as expensive.
True to form, when asked about the price difference, John Dodge proclaimed, "Just think of all
those Ford owners who will someday want an automobile".
That's talking shit, 1900s style
But remember, the Dodge brothers still owned 10% of the Ford Motor Company… while they're
building, and making money selling Dodges.
They were using the dividends from Ford to run Dodge.
Henry Ford was directly paying for the operations of a competing company.
And he really hated that.
What's a Ford to do?
He just stopped paying them, even though the Dodge bros were rightfully entitled to their
dividends.
Ford was like, "I don't care.
I'm not Paying."
So John and Horace sued for their missing money, and Ford lost.
He ended up paying them 19 million in back dividends, AND had to resume paying them quarterly.
"Well that sucks."
Ford needed the Dodge Brothers to disappear… from his company.
To coax them into selling their stake in Ford, Henry leaked a story to the Los Angeles Examiner
that he was going to leave Ford and start a new company, that would sell an even cheaper
car.
If this was true, Ford undercutting himself would tank the Ford Motor Company value.
But nobody believed it, because it was stupid, so the company DIDN'T lose value.
THEN the Dodge brothers got a mysterious phone call from an anonymous party, offering to
take the stock off their hands for a good price.
"Hey I don't know you, but I'd be willing to take that stock off your hands for a nice
price because I know, and you know, that it's going down.
It's going way down.
That's what the newspapers say.
Uh my name?
It's uhh, Fenry..uh Kenry Dord uh Henry gah"
Again, they still didn't believe it, and weren't going to sell for anything less
than what they thought their 10% stake was worth.
It wasn't long however, before the Dodge boys got tired of getting weird phone calls
late at night from "Schmenry Schmord," or Fenry Hord, so they just auctioned off
the stock themselves for what it was worth, making 25 million dollars in the process.
And Ford was finally free from Dodge.
The Dodge Brothers had turned an initial investment worth about 250 thousand dollars today, into
the equivalent of 760 million dollars.
Not bad for a couple of boys from Niles.
If you're from Niles, that's cool.
Without the Dodge Brothers, Henry Ford might never have built the Model T. But without
the Model T, the Dodge brothers might not have built the first Dodge.
And the craziest part of all is that the rivalry that started between Ford- a conservative
teetotaller and Dodge- the Maverick outsiders is still raging over a century later.

2015-2018 F150 Ford Performance by Borla Touring Dual Exhaust System 5.0L Sound Clip & Install - Duration: 6:24.
Ford Performance by Borla Touring System should appeal to the truck owners out there who are
looking for a premium system in regards to overall build quality in materials, one that
will offer that very cool dual same side exit configuration and perhaps one of the most
unique tips in the category, but finally and maybe most importantly, it's going to be for
the owners out there who wanna upgrade their exhaust but would prefer to keep things as
quiet as possible, and I do think that's the biggie here when talking about this particular
system as, in my opinion, it is gonna be one of the tamest aftermarket systems.
And this is gonna be a strong one out of three wrenches on my difficult meter.
So the touring that we have in this video is currently one of two different options
available from Ford Performance and from Borla.
Your other option being the slightly more aggressive sport option here.
But as advertised, the touring is gonna be the milder of the two systems as you guys
heard with our sound clips.
And speaking of those sound clips, you guys heard the deal.
You're getting the smallest amount of volume increase over your factory system which some
people may be after, others may be not so much, and quite frankly if you're after a
very aggressive system, the touring just simply isn't gonna be for you, check out that sport
system instead that we just talked about.
Now, what you are getting, again, is the smallest increase in volume over your factory system,
a slightly deeper tone when you really hammer on it, but this thing is absolutely whisper
quiet inside the cab.
So, breaking out my wake the neighbor scale with one essentially being a factory exhaust,
I got this thing coming in at a strong two out of five on my one to five wake the neighbor
scale.
Honestly guys, I don't hand out a whole lot of twos here when it comes to overall volume,
and that should be a good indication to you just how quiet this thing is.
And in my opinion, honestly it's probably one of the most quiet systems currently available
for your truck.
So, if you really aren't getting a ton of sound from an exhaust, why else might you
wanna consider it?
Well, the premium Borla and Ford Performance quality should be a biggie here for ya. 304
grade stainless steel throughout, premium weld build quality, it's just a very, very
nice system from start to finish.
You're looking at three-inch tubing, going through the resonator here leading into the
touring series muffler before stepping down in the two and a quarter-inch tubing, all
exiting out these very unique four-inch square tips.
I can't decide if I love 'em or hate 'em, luckily for you guys it doesn't matter what
I think in that department, but they are very unique to say the least.
But let's go back and talk about kinda what shapes the sound here, the mild sound with
the touring system.
And honestly, it's a combination of two things.
First up, you do have that midpipe resonator that we talked about, working along or in
conjunction with the turbo style touring series muffler, really helps keep everything in check.
I do also wanna point out that those square tips that we just talked about, they are gonna
exit in the stock location behind that passenger side rear tire, and I do wanna say that yes
they are pretty unique, and the square tips, in my opinion, do work with the newer F-150s
because the truck as a whole is a little boxier by nature and these things kind of fit along
with that.
Switching gears, let's quickly talk about price before we get into the install.
And throughout the video, we've mentioned this is a premium system.
You're getting great build quality, great materials, and as such it is gonna carry with
it a premium price tag.
You're looking right around the $1,100 to $1,200 price point for the Ford Performance
by Borla System, putting it in line with some of your other more premium options here on
the site.
But as such the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for," and the Ford Performance
by Borla stuff certainly doesn't disappoint.
But let's get into that install a little further here, guys.
And as I mentioned that the very top of this video, this is gonna be a strong one out of
three wrenches despite the small amount of cutting needed, depending on your cabin bedside.
Now I don't want this to scare you guys away because cutting the system is not very difficult
as long as you measure twice, cut once using a decent cutting tool and a vice.
Ford performance and Borla, they layout very clearly where you need to cut, so again just
take your time, measure everything correctly and you won't have any issues.
As far as tools needed, well obviously that cutting tool is a given, along with a basic
socket set is really all you need to get everything in place here with this cat-back.
You wanna get that factory system out of the way first.
Once that is removed from the truck, get to work and install on the new guy here, starting
from front to back.
Get the entire system hung first before your final tighten up, and you're good to go.
So for the countless owners out there who love modifying their trucks but have been
holding off on modifying their stock exhaust because of that less than favorable tone,
I think the Ford Performance by Borla Touring is gonna be a great choice for you.
The slightest increase in volume, along with that A plus build makes this an awesome choice
for any truck owner who would prefer to keep things as quiet as possible, and you can check
one out for your ride right here at americanmuslce.com.
