In a world based on consumerism, there are already many who have chosen to live
in a simpler way, following the minimalism principles. Getting rid of up to 90%
of their material possessions, to only keep what is necessary to
live and be happy.
Antoine Grillon is an advocate of these
ideas. He designs and lives in Tiny houses that combine ecology, design and technology.
It shows that, when choosing a place to live in, size is not what matters the most
To live in a Tiny house, is to have much more time in reality. Less than 30 minutes
to clean it, spending much less on electricity, water, gas
actually almost nothing because we're connected to solar panels and we use
composting toilets, which do not consume any water.
It's something that simplifies your life a lot
For 10 years, Antoine worked in a multinational, in the marketing department
He had a good salary and a lot of stress as well. He decided to change that and turn
his dream into reality. Now, together with is co.founder Nicolas, they build Tiny houses,
an option that, in Spain, is still incipient but that responds to
another way of living
I saw that there was a French guy who was building a Tiny house in Spain and
there was nobody who made Tiny Houses in Spain at this time. I thought: I have to
talk to him, I have to find him and see what
we could do together. I went to the hangar he had rented and
after 15 minutes, and a glass of cava, we basically had chosen to work together
The Tiny house is a bit of a strange object.
We get its autonomy from the world of high-seas boats,
we use a trailer as a base and then we use techniques of
wooden construction. So, really, it could be a house, a
ship on land ... It is a mixture of many techniques, many technologies that we
found throughout Europe, or the entire world, and that we've
mixed together. It's how we can really get the most of the natural elements:
the sun, water ... and how can we reduce our consumption
to really reduce our impact, reduce our expenses...
We consume 70% less water than a conventional house thanks to different
water saving techniques and dry toilets. And in terms of electric power,
solar, we don't consume at all because we have solar panels. We have also
tried to reduce the consumption itself. For example, the whole house consumes about 130
watts which means it consumes less than a normal standard fridge
They are made entirely of ecological materials. If we talk about the paint,
it is totally ecological, without any type of chemical inside. The isolation
of the wall, is a mixture of hemp, linen and cotton. In the ground, we use recycled paper
and wood wool in the roof. We really try to avoid any
product that is not totally renewable or that has a negative impact on the environment
The Tiny houses movement is something quite alegal we could say; It is not
legal, it is not illegal, it does not exist in the existing standards. As of today, there is no reference.
A house created like a boat, on top of a trailer, it does not exist. That said,
we are within the rules to be able to circulate on the road without any
kind of special permission
It is something that could be applied to many uses: emergency housing,
housing for immigrants, housing for families that want to reduce their impact,
their living expenses. Really, the only limitation is your spirit, your mentality
and what you want to achieve
I think we live with too many physical things. What we need would be more
experiences and less physical things. I think we try to compensate the lack of
humanity or contact with people, with material purchases. We are in a
competition to have bigger cars, bigger houses, when we know
that the planet cannot continue like this.
Le Corbusier used to say: I have a castle on the blue coast measuring 3.66
x 3.66 meters. Surprising to see that one of the fathers of modern architecture,
in the last years of his life, and after having built large buildings
ended up concluding that he had more than enough with a house of 13 square meters
As Mies Van Der Rohe would say, another of the
most influential architects of the 20th century, "less is more"
My apartment is 36 square meters big, I live as a couple, I do not need more. I mean, I think
that we always had the feeling that we need more and that means
habits that, in the end, are a burden
