Volvo's V90 Cross Country may look imposing, but it's just a whisker longer than its nearest

direct competitor, the Audi A6 Allroad.

Dramatic design and raised ride height contribute to the perception that the V90 is a giant

among SUVs.

But get behind the wheel and the V90 feels much more manageable.

Not only does the Volvo handle well for its size, it produces strong grip in corners and

can match many conventional passenger cars for steering and braking.

But while the V90 is a safe, composed tourer, the ride is bordering on firm at around-town

speeds, and the Volvo does buck and pitch over speed humps.

Residing under the bonnet of the V90 is a sensational four-cylinder diesel, coupled

to a smooth, capable eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite giving away a litre of displacement to the Audi V6, the Volvo powerplant delivers

more power and nearly as much torque, yet it's refined and frugal too.

The highpoint of the V90, however, is its stunning interior, with fit and finish easily

the equal of comparable models from German prestige brands, and an advanced infotainment

system featuring internet apps, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

A host of driver-assist aids include Parking Assist, adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist

- which helps with the steering - Distance Alert, Run-Off road mitigation, traffic sign

recognition, Blind Spot Information System and Cross Traffic Alert.

The roomy cabin is beautifully appointed and the driving position provides good length

to pedals and wheel with a seat that offers power adjustment for the extendable base,

side bolsters and lumbar support.

Kids get adjustable vents blowing from both directions and a climate control zone for

each of them.

Both front and rear seats can be heated, and the front seats provide ventilation for warmer

days.

While the instruments are readable at a glance and the controls are all located for ease

of use, the auto wiper button on the stalk is not obviously a button.

The brilliant LED headlights are adaptive, lighting up the inside of dark bends at night,

and automatically dipping from high beam at the first sign of an on-coming car, or the

tail lights of a car in front.

Priced and packaged as it is, the V90 Cross Country won't sell in massive numbers, but

it will cement Volvo's reputation for quality, presentation and safety.
