Zelda games are normally known for their huge cavernous dungeons, but alongside of those exist several mini dungeons scattered throughout
Sometimes these mini dungeons are required in order to progress further, and at other times the act is completely optional spaces.
For this list I'm not including Breath of the Wild shrines as they don't exactly compare to what I define as a mini dungeon.
Also, I'm not including any of the gauntlet challenges such as a savage labyrinth or trial the sword,
but everything else is fair game.

With that out of the way, I present to you my top 5 Legend of Zelda mini dungeons.
Number five is the Ikana castle from majora's mask.
Serving as one of the most thematically impressive mini dungeons on this list, the Ikana Castle gains most of its memorability through atmosphere and lore
Along with the other
locations in Ikana, this area did a great job with portraying the theme of death, while also reminding the player of the castles
historical prominence amongst the land, which I thought was a very unique blend.
Yes, the design was very linear and didn't contain the most interesting puzzles, but the lead-up was worth it,
as a fight with the king of ikana, and his servants definitely struck out to me
Overall this place served as a great lead up to the daunting stone tower temple.
Number four is the Gerudo training grounds from ocarina of time.
This optional mini dozen consisted of dozens of puzzle of combat rooms pieced together in a maze like
format where their player must collect as many keys as possible.
What I like about this place is that it requires the player to use a wide variety of their items in order to solve these
challenges.
Most of these rooms represent the past dungeons in the game, which worked out really nicely with the places maze-like feel.
Overall this was definitely a fun late-game challenge.
Serving as probably the most mechanically impressive mini dungeon on this list, the pirate stronghold from skyward sword contained an impressive game mechanic
that was evolved perfectly.
Before this, timeshift stones were usually set to a specific place where its area of effect always remained constant.
This dungeon elevates its mechanic by giving the player a portable time shift orb that they are allowed to take anywhere within the mini dungeon.
Sometimes, the orbs area of effect is helpful towards your progression,
but sometimes it is harmful, as certain barriers and obstacles are only apparent in one time period and not another.
This forces the player to become a creative in the way that the position to orb in order to solve puzzles.
This key mechanic is the main reason why this place is so memorable.
Number two is the pirate's fortress from Majora's Mask. There have been many stealth segments that exist within the series,
but the Pirates fortress has got to be one of the best.
It felt really awesome trying to sneak my way past the many guards in this grand fortress, accompanied by an amazing soundtrack.
In order to get to the main part of the fortress, the player must make the way through several underground
waterways that offer puzzles, which was definitely a great way to avoid the monotony.
There is a small bone I have to pick with this place, and that is if your character has not yet acquired four bottles,
they'll have to revisit this place all over again in order to collect all the Zora eggs.
Considering how awesome of a place this is though, that annoyance can be overlooked as it was still such a memorable dungeon.
The bottom of the wall from Ocarina of Time is by far the most memorable and thematically daunting mini dungeon in the series.
The corridors of this place are littered with mummified enemies, prison cells, caskets, a torture rack, and even this thing!!
Wasn't this game rated E for everyone though?? xD
But in seriousness, this place nailed the sense of atmosphere, as I really felt frightened traversing through this ghostly place.
One of the main things that adds to this dungeon is that link is not a grown adult in this place, you complete it as
child link which completely flips the sense of scale out of his favor to make all these dark themes feel even more impactful.
Overall, this was by far the most memorable and iconic mini dungeon in the series.
