Smart Retail Book Review 📖 Winning Ideas & Strategies from the World's Most Successful Retailers - Duration: 7:02.

Hello!

I'm Rebecca Brocton and this is the eCommerce Forest book club!

Today I'm reviewing Smart Retail by Richard Hammond

No, not that Richard Hammond.

This one!

Richard Hammond is the CEO of Uncrowd and has over 30 years of

retail experience and you can really tell how passionate he is about the

industry throughout this book.

Sometimes books like this can be a little bit dry

and hard to connect with, but his style of writing is actually really relatable

and super engaging and I actually felt like I was just having a conversation with

him.

Now this is the fourth edition of smart retail that he's authored

The first edition came out in 2003.

The second in 2007.

The third in 2011 and

this latest version came out last year in 2017

Now this is the first edition

that I've read but honestly I'd recommend it to anyone in this industry

be they merchant, developer, designer, project manager, solutions specialist, marketer

If you have a hand in this wonderful world of commerce: GET THIS BOOK.

It is jam-packed full of innovations, real world case studies

experiences, leadership tips, and a bunch of tips that you can apply to your

everyday thinking.

If you love this sector, Smart Retail is guaranteed to

leave you feeling inspired.

It did that to me hence why I'm doing this video review

and hence why I'm telling you to buy it and hence why I also added the author on LinkedIn

I promise to help you avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater

and identify the right relationship for your business between technology and

emotion.

Now I absolutely love that line from the introduction and it's because

of that last word emotion.

It is so important to remember that commerce is

about more than just buying and selling it's about your emotional context

How do you make your customers feel?

Why do they buy from you?

Richard goes

into this a lot in chapter 2 which is my absolute favourite chapter

and it opens up with a story from a DIY retail conference and I'd

like to read to you because it's so good.

The room of hardened DIY retail veterans

is silent, save for one measured and clear voice, a voice that barely hides a

rising tide of emotion.

George Hutchison one of their own and as battle-scarred

as any, is describing how he feels when he comes home late after a day on the

front line and goes into his daughter's room where she is cozily tucked up asleep.

George has told us of the wave of emotion he feels just being in that room

knowing his little girl is safe, warm and loved he explains that it is a room he

and Daisy worked on together picking out the colors and the accessories and

making it into the space she loves and George has transported us to.

The audience of embattled and practical retailers is silent, you could hear a pin

drop

because George has quietly reminded them of the reality of what it is their

industry does.

It enables people to improve their living spaces, to make safe

attractive and comfortable places they can truly call home.

These retailers have

had a stark and emotional reminder that they don't just sell tins of paint they

sell the sanctuary a father builds for his daughter.

It is a heart-stopping

moment and it is clear that many of the audience trapped in a conference room as

part of their own retail progression are thinking about the last time they too

were back in the homes they have made watching over their own children

If you know what you are as a retail business and understand the emotional context in

which you exist then you can transform how you relate to customers

I mean the first time I read this I kid you not I

had goosebumps!

Actual goosebumps.

So what else is in this book smart retail is

split into two parts across 16 chapters

the first part is about the 7 secrets of modern retail.

Number one: low friction

high reward.

Customers go to where it's easy or brilliant or both and the

choice is completely there's Number two: what's the big idea?

What are you as a retail business actually for?

Number three: Want?

Got need

how to understand and meet customer needs states

Number four: I'm just looking.

Which is all about why discovery is actually really important

to modern retail.

Number five: I choose stories.

How curation and narrative

actually make it easier to decide to buy Number six: The everywhere store

What location means now and how online and offline are irrelevant labels and

finally number seven: we love working here.

How great employee experiences are

vital to great customer ones.

Part two is a bit of doing it it's the practical

side of the book that's full of ideas suggestions and tips on doing retail

that are based on real world examples from some of the best retailers on the

planet.

You've got examples in there from Bose Apple Mac Selfridges

Halfords Krispy Kreme KFC Whole Foods Stew Lenhards

IKEA Top Shop I could keep going forever and ever there are so many case studies

in here from real retailers that we all know and love and that it's just so

valuable I really really cannot stress to you how

amazing the stories in this book are and how relatable is and then

there's also an appendices where richard has filled it with stuff that didn't

quite fit anywhere else in the book but it's just as valuable.

I'm telling you

this book is cover to cover gold Another thing that I do love about this book

is

at the end of every single chapter there's actually two sets of bullet

points, as you can see here.

One of things that you can do now so like instant

actionable so that you can apply to your thinking and your business and then

another of strategic considerations for the long-term so these are the things to

do next that you can actually add to your business plans.

There really is

something in here for everyone and as it says on the back smart retail is that

how to retail Bible and it's all based on one question: What makes you so good?

well this book will make you better.

I paid $16.99 for this book in the

WHSmiths at Euston station & I can tell you it was worth every penny but I

know for a fact on Amazon you can get it delivered tomorrow with prime for

something like 13 pounds 88 so even cheaper if you are interested I'll put a

link in the description.

If you do decide to get it or if you have already

read it, let me know what you think in the comments below or on Twitter

@RebeccaBrocton.

I'd be really interested to hear what you have to say

whether you liked it, what your favorite parts were, what your least favorite

parts were.

I want you to be open with me and let me know what you think.

Other than that if you liked this video give it a thumbs up and make sure you

subscribe so you don't miss anything.

I'm a bit of a bookworm so if you have any

recommendations of what I should read next do send them over.

I would love to hear from you!

Smart Real Estate Wholesaling - THE BOOK - CHAPTER 3 - Data Collection - Duration: 11:28.

CLOSED CAPTION BY YOUTUBE! smart real estate wholesaling chapter three data collection how to generate

real estate wholesale deals by marketing intelligently for free and for life

imagine sending one email and your $3,000 mortgage payment for the month

gets paid just like that compare that to waiting forever on your

next and first real estate wholesaling deal that may never even close

imagine knowing the exact segment or demographic that responds the best to

your messages in gender age group interests and etc equipped with this

type of information about your prospect how easy would it be to create solutions

that you know they want for a fact before this publication you are probably

exposed to five main marketing strategies all of which fall short of

the level of business intelligence you need to operate our smart real estate

wholesaling Empire for example direct mailing starts with

access to data about property owners in distressed situation such as foreclosure

divorce death bad tenant tax delinquency however that level of data is not enough

to compete in this modern age back in 2005 it was good enough because there

was no oversupply of real estate wholesaling investors as we have today

the competition is a lot higher now therefore you need a better competitive

advantage you need to collect a lot more information than just names property

addresses and status all you get with that is an ability to send letters

that's too much of a wide net to cast and it's just too expensive due to the

competition so even though there's a list involved in direct mailing mailing

that list is a code marketing strategy because the prospects don't know you

much less like him and trusting you the KLT factor is missing in essence you

have to sell them on doing business with you as opposed to being already sold

before their subscription to your list or network marketing without collecting

primary data aka contact information will make you

dry up your marketing budget very quickly your primary objective when

marketing to a brand new code prospect is to offer them some type of valuable

information in exchange for their contact information such as name and

address and phone number that simple concept creates a major difference in

your sustainability as a marketer as you collect this first level of data you are

building a list of highly interested and targeted audience that you can keep

marketing to for free that gives your real estate all sudden Empire strength

to carry through long term in marketing bandwidth as you are probably becoming

more aware now the real estate wholesaling business is basically a

survival of the fittest the person that can spend the most on marketing wins the

game but spending the most without a plan to sustain the limitations of your

budget it's a losing battle it's about knowing how to preserve your resources

using leverage and not necessarily by holding back on spending if you are

trying to win the game of lowest spending all you have to do is stop

spending I'm guessing you want more than just low marketing spending you want

profitability so you need to create multiple leverage points that creates a

funded perpetual marketing machine for your real estate wholesaling empire if

all you do is market to prospects without first level data collection

hacks like building a list of prospects contacts information

you create ultimatums in your marketing funds and time budget your marketing

won't last long enough to take it a step further first level data collection is

not enough in order to market and generate revenue cost-effectively in the

modern age you need to collect data about first level data for example it is

not enough to have the names property addresses and status of pre foreclosures

in your city you also need to know the age group

and gender that respond to your marketing messages the most it's even

better when you collect more data about the type of messages they respond to the

most what if you also have information about other interests coming to your

prospects not only are you able to customize your offers and services to

what they want you can also create other joint venture and partnership about

opportunities for the market at large on a larger scale that's when you know that

you're truly building a real estate wholesaling empire and not just chasing

after your first or next deal so in 2006 after closing about seven to ten real

estate wholesaling deals I quickly realized that the typical idea of

available cash buyers sold to us by the Guru's was complete BS first of all

there were too few of them have able to buy the properties I was getting on the

contract in addition to that the few cash buyers typically have 1,001 reasons

why it is not good enough deal for their criteria at first I believed them and

socked around claiming there were no deals I had by us ready to go or so I

thought but the properties I had under contract did not fit their criteria

according to them those were not deals after observing my mentor Anthony a

little bit I realized that he was attracting his end buyers who were not

necessarily cash buyers from the mainstream this buyers were willing to

pay a little more for this discounted properties than 75% off after repair

value I decided to take this idea a little further a built an online

platform that collected first level data aka contacts information from people

interested in properties with inbuilt equity a beauty list of 500 plus by a

process which turned out to be a community that expected my daily email

offers religiously from 2006 to 2008 getting qualified by us for the

properties I had under contract was the least of my issues I would simply send

an email to my list when a property becomes available and a few people would

either be interested in and qualified to buy the contract or

they will have someone in their network who is willing and able collecting data

I'm building my list and network to source buyers was the smallest thing I

did for my real estate wholesaling business back in 2006 the dumbest thing

I did that disposed my business more to the recession in 2008 was to stop

promoting and building that list your favorite gurus and the ones that get

result in the game do the same you can see it in the very same way that you've

consumed the information till now if you watch their video on YouTube they will

encourage you to subscribe like and share that's data collection if you

visited a website they would offer a free subscription to their newsletter

that's data collection if you've visited a website even if you don't subscribe

your data is still being collected that's the modern age after subscribing

through one of the Guru's content distribution channel you would receive

emails and other types of notifications about newest content releases they are

able to create a living connection with you the prospect because they lead with

value in exchange for your contact information basically they collected

your data in previous chapters you learned to lead with value however given

all your knowledge and wisdom away is not enough with any type of marketing

you establish connection with a prospect but in order for you to be able to

continue to serve you need ongoing connection with the prospect that's only

possible when you collect at least force level data from them their contact

information such as email addresses and/or

phone number therefore you are able to continue to send more valuable

information and special offers to them as you build that list your business

grows and as I mentioned before one email offer can pay a monthly mortgage

payment for the month and even more you can create a fully partnership and offer

other people's real estate related products to your subscribers it is also

worth noting that data collection allows you to learn more about your prospect in

proactive and passive ways an example of proactive ways is sending a survey to

your list to learn more about how you can best

serve them when you make data collection the primary objective when marketing its

a guaranteed strategy to better business intelligence and more importantly you

get to create perpetual opportunities to market to your best prospects for free

sales will happen and contracts will be signed without you having to sell it

will have direct and ongoing impact on your bottom line what if you just

download a vacant property leased from list sauce and send them letters could

you still find and close deals sure you can but the chances are a lot less you

can create dead connections but you will need luck and lots of hope to operate

your real estate wholesaling business a dead connection is created when you

don't use the first connection as an opportunity to collect data therefore

not having the ability to continue to connect without additional marketing

expenses so ultimately it depends on the call to action in those letters if your

letters offer the prospect a downloadable from your website in

exchange for their email addresses you will be creating the living connection

because you are collecting data if you are attempting to get a prostitue call

you without data collection you are creating a dead connection if life

happens and they are not able to call you immediately you lost money in

marketing to that prospect and you will have to spend money again in order to

have a chance to get their connection ever again

never spend a dime or a second in time again on marketing without the primary

goal being data collection in addition to collecting fourth level data such as

the contact information the tools nowadays will help you collect more

levels data about the prospect to help you make more intelligent business

decisions when it comes to marketing if you're not collecting data you're not

able to follow up effectively with your prospect both selling and buying

prospers need more than five exposures on an average before deciding to sign

contracts and/or do business with you I'm often tempted to create ads and

content designed to close without data collection

I come from that always be closing ABC sales mindset but things are changing

fast in the modern age ABC stands for always be creating or always be

collecting data ABCD getting contracts signed and closing sales in the modern

age requires business intelligence which is only acquired through data collection

go to my Empire for comm for more information

Lazy and Smart Dinosaurs and a sleepy chicken(please watch with translate, transcript) - Duration: 0:44.

There were two dinosaurs living together. They would wake up in the morning and eat the food from near the house. The green dinosaur, who was named Shadi was very smart. The yellow dinosaur, named Sagi was very lazy

Shadi would wake up early to get the food and Sagi would wake up late to get the food. Near the dinosaurs house was a fence that separated them from more food.

Shadi knew that the food near their house would finish one day. So he started to practice to jump the fence. He did this so that when the food finished near them, he could jump the fence to get more food on the other side

Sagi the lazy dinosaur didn't care. She always just slept and ate and didn't practice to jump the fence. Days passed and finally the food finished. When the food finished however, Shadi still had not mastered the jumping of the fence.

The next morning Shadi woke up early to see what Sagi would do about the fence. He taught her could laugh at Sagi while she failed to jump the fence

However, Shadi saw a very strange scene instead. He saw Sagi wake up and walk slowly you the end of the fence and then walked around the fence until she reached the other side of the fence.

Shadi followed her and they both ate the food. On the other side of the fence there was a chicken. She had saved the food for winter but was asleep. She woke up suddenly and saw the two dinosaurs eating her food! She got up quickly to attack them and stop them from eating her food!

sometimes there are other ways to solve a problem not just one way

Marine vet gets smart home (and independence) from Gary Sinise Foundation - Duration: 5:01.

On April 11, 2012, two weeks into his sixth combat deployment, Major Eric Burkett's V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft crashed in North Africa

He was one of only two Marines to survive. Now -- after years of recovery, countless operations and the amputation of Maj

Burkett's second leg earlier this year -- he and his family are receiving a taste of independence after receiving a fully furnished, wheelchair accessible, specially adapted smart home built for them by the Gary Sinise Foundation

On June 14 -- Flag Day -- Eric, his wife Melissa and their six children were given the keys to their new home and an iPad that Maj

Burkett can use to operate every part of the house and reach areas he couldn't access from his wheelchair

"I just want to say a quick thank you to everybody that came out to everybody that participated in this project, that prayed for us, that was with us along the way," Melissa Burkett said to gathered donors and friends

"Friends, family, friends that we made through this adventure. Thank you, really from the bottom of my heart, thank you

"  "This is our forever home," Maj. Burkett said, holding back tears as his six year old son Lochlen patted his arm

"There's a master bathroom that is completely accessible."  There are adaptive showers so that he can bathe himself and self-lowering shelves in the state-of-the-art kitchen, so that now Maj

Burkett can cook again for his family.  "The idea of getting up and moving around freely without thinking about logistics

Should I use a chair? Should I use crutches? All that's gone," Maj. Burkett said

Pointing to the wall of his new home outside Pittsburgh, this Marine has a few reminders from the day that his life changed on a training mission in Morocco

"That is actually of one of the prop rotors of the V-22 that crashed. On the back of that, I don't know how many Marines signed that," Burkett said

The foundation started by actor Gary Sinise, best known for his role as Lt. Dan in the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump", is trying to build 10 to 12 homes per year for severely injured veterans and first responders

It will hand over the keys to its 50th smart home this August.  Donations from Home Depot, JC Penny, GE, Benjamin Moore and the Semper Fi Fund among others made it possible

Fox News first told the Burketts' story in 2014 while he and his family were recovering at Walter Reed

He and his wife were raising their four children at the time in a set of tiny rooms at the hospital

They have since given birth to twins, Nolynn and Roawyn, who are now 18 months old

A master archer, Maj. Burkett began competing as a Paralympian in an effort to begin to heal after the crash

"I hate shooting from a wheelchair. A lot of guys don't mind it because you're a little bit lower, you don't have to worry about this instability of your legs," Burkett said while practicing on a range near Walter Reed in 2014

"Less wind . But I hate it. I'd rather stand. I mean it does get painful at times

"  Burkett has competed across the U.S. at the Warrior Games and at the Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry of Great Britain, and has won numerous Gold Medals for archery

Now he has his own bow lab in his basement.  The Burketts' 15-year-old son Keenan and 12-year-old daughter Josilyn take their brother Mastin to look for crawfish in the creek behind their new home

It's a long way from the hospital room at Walter Reed where they lived while their father recovered from multiple surgeries and amputations

On this Independence Day, Maj. Eric Burkett and his family raise the flag outside their new home in central Pennsylvania, a story of resilience and the generosity of Americans who are giving back to those who have served this nation

Jennifer Griffin currently serves as a national security correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC) and is based out of the Washington D

C. bureau. She joined the network in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent

Business Update - Smart Energy Grants - Duration: 2:05.

The Northern Territory Government is investing

in long-term renewable energy solutions

to reduce the cost of living,

to create work for Territory businesses

and to drive economic development.

The Smart Energy Grants program was launched

earlier this year, giving Territory homeowners

the opportunity to access a grant

to make energy-efficiency improvements

to their home or investment property

using local businesses to do the work.

I'm here today with Nayelle Kelso

from long-term Territory business

Friendly Pool & Spa Care

to talk about the positive impact

the program has had on her business.

It's been amazing we've had heaps of inquiries

and get people to fill out the forms

very easy for everyone to apply for the grant

and it has increased our pump sales incredibly

which then creates more work for our staff.

We are supplying more energy-efficient pumps

than all of our installs for the energy pumps

which can save you hundreds of dollars

on your electricity bill and better for the environment.

Over 200 local businesses have participated

in the program so far

contributing an estimated 14 million dollars

to the Territory economy.

When you get a grant people can afford

to have a pump because everyone wants

to have more energy-efficient pumps

but they are quite expensive so with the grant

paying up to a good amount of money off the pump

makes people easier to be able to install one.

Grants of up to $1,000 are available

on a 50/50 co-contribution basis

and for eligible NT pensioners

the contribution required is 25%

making it more affordable.

More than half of the available Smart Energy Grants

have been used already.

Applications closed on 31st January 2019

or when funds run out.

For further information

including a full list of eligible works

Digitisation in agriculture: "Digifermes" project in France testing smart technologies - Duration: 3:49.

"Digiferme" is an experimental and demo farm where we are working on new digital technologies.

The "Digiferme" project, which was launched two years ago, now includes 8 "Digifermes".

I am responsible for the "Digiferme arable crops" which is located south of Paris.

It's a 150-hectare farm.

There are several types of agriculture: organic and conservation agriculture and conventional farming.

Our interest is therefore to see if these new digital technologies

improve the performance of these different types of agriculture.

"Digiferme arable crops", Boigneville, France

We work in collaboration with all digital partners.

All start-ups that exist today in France can work with us

if we see a use for their technologies in the types of crops we are studying.

Tests of mature methods

You have technologies that are ready to be used, even to be commercialized.

For example we will compare connected weather stations,

to see if they work in terms of connectivity,

and if they end up with the same recommendations as a reference station, such as météo France.

This is one of the concrete examples of our activities.

Robot Tests

The robots we test at the Boigneville "Digiferme" are tested

to analyze their performance.

The robots are prototypes and are not on the market.

So we will look to see whether they can fulfil the role that they have been given.

If we see that there are improvements to be made, we will work

with the company to try to improve the points we have identified.

Our objective is that these technologies, which we believe to be important in preparing for the future,

should be made operational and effective for farmers as quickly as possible.

Sharing knowledge

The objective of this project is also to receive visitors and to explain to producers

the way it will probably be in the future, or, at least the options that will be available for agriculture in the future.

Some start-ups are working in other countries with products

and technologies that could interest our project.

We are therefore trying to build European and international collaborations.

The objective is that the "Digiferme" be visited, but above all to widely communicate our activities.

So we write a lot of articles. We're on Twitter, we're on Facebook.

And our objective is to disseminate all of our knowledge, all of our work, all of our results

to all farmers via the Internet.

Challenges ahead

The stakes for agriculture are enormous.

Especially because there is a strong societal demand to stop using plant protection products.

And for me, digital technologies are part of the solution.

In the longer term, we foresee an increase in skills of all agricultural employees:

A simple tractor driver tomorrow is someone who can repair a robot,

fly a drone, analyse drone images.

So the challenge is also to prepare tomorrow's jobs now

and therefore train people so that they have more skills, especially in the digital field.

Smart Move: How to Pack Paintings, Pictures, & Canvases - Duration: 3:44.

Okay, so today let me talk to you about packing paintings and pictures.

So we'll start off with a small picture.

What we suggest doing with these is just bubble wrapping them... just for extra protection.

So, typically, we'll go over it twice.

And just tape it, and then I'll show you how to place it into a box.

Okay, so to place it in a box, what we suggest doing is crushed paper at the bottom.

Crushed paper in the bottom

Place the picture in that way.

Then some crushed paper around the sides to protect it... to keep the pictures apart

so that they can't touch each other.

Okay, so to package any paintings that are larger... that won't fit into a box.

What we suggest doing, is the vulnerable parts of the painting will be the corners.

These are the things that will get damaged if anything happens.

So what we suggest doing is bubble wrapping.

Bubble wrapping the top and the bottom, ensuring that you cover the corners.

You're to repeat the process on the bottom as well.

As you can see now, the tops protected and the corners will get some protection as well.

So you're to repeat the same process on this side.

Then when the guys come to actually do the removal, they'll blanket wrap it and tape it as well

to give it double protection.

But this method just protects the corners on all the paintings.

Okay, so for larger paintings, canvases especially, what we suggest doing is wrapping in a paper back bubble wrap.

This is double-sided paper with bubble wrap in between.

This ensures that no plastic leaches onto the canvas.

And also, that the canvas is protected by the paper, whilst being stored or transported.

We suggest going around it twice.

If you can do that twice, then tape it up so it's all nice and tight, and then that will

ensure that any canvas that you got will be protected.

So, paperback bubble wrap for canvases.

Okay, also when your painting, or canvas, or whatever it might be, picture, is bubble

wrapped and ready to be blanket wrapped by the removalist, what we suggest doing as well

is writing on the front of it... on the paper or on the bubble wrap that this is the front of the canvas.

So that when the guys pick it up, they know what they're looking at.

They know which way is front and which way is back.

Just to ensure the best safety for your paintings.

Smart Controller de Cli-Mate. Vídeo Tutorial - Duration: 1:46.

This is the Smart Controller, the Cli-Mate extraction speed controller.

We open the box and take out the unit.

Multi-language instructions and the unit, as I say, is very small.

Here you have the male plug, the female,

and here is where we would connect the extractor and here we can control it.

The Smart Controller is this small device used to control

the temperature of the grow tent via extraction.

It has 2 simple knobs, one for the speed,

or the % of maximum or minimum speed that we want for the extractor,

in this case we'll have it low, it will always be working at this speed,

I can lower it so that you notice the change, with respect to the temperature...

if I want to have the temperature at 28ºC for example and it exceeds this threshold,

the extractor will start working until it reaches 100% velocity.

This is the temperature probe of the Smart Controller, which comes with a 4m cable,

so you can place it inside the grow tent.

You see, very easy to install.
