Sitting down with Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid opposite Times columnist Natasha Devon and former deputy school head Ruth Kudzi, the 53-year-old journalist found himself trading blows over skirts and transgender rights
Likening the decision of 40 schools across the country to ban skirts to something you'd 'expect to hear in North Korea or China' Piers laid the blame for the 'ludicrous' decision on transgender activists – something which Natasha took exception to
After he tried to move the debate onto the subject of trans pupils, Natasha called him out, replying: 'I don't understand why you're so obsessed with transgender people
This is nothing to do with transgender.' Clearly not for turning back, Piers replied: 'What about Wimbledon tennis then, what if a trans player emerges at the top level are we going to ban skirts?' Not budging either, Natasha replied: 'I don't understand why we're talking about a hypothetical transgender Wimbledon player when we started off talking about schools?' As sparks flew the argument got slightly personal as Natasha said the mainstream media (and Piers) 'tried to make everything' about trans rights
Things became increasingly more tit-for-tat – with Susanna and Ruth finding themselves effectively spectators in the verbal jousting match – Piers asked why Natasha had chose to wear a dress instead of a suit like him
The columnist managed to land what appeared to be a small victory in the 'debate', as she caught him off guard with a rather acidic retort
Replying to Piers, she said: 'Because my job today was to sit at a desk and endure you for 10 minutes.' Ouch! As the debate raged on with Ruth briefly joining the fray to side with Piers on her belief that students should be allowed to choose either skirts or trousers, Piers exploded and effectively ended the debate
'It's like chairman Mao's China!' he wailed. 'It's a totalitarian state order [the skirt ban]! Over 40 schools have said no girls will wear skirts again, that's the kind of thing I would expect to hear in North Korea or China
