OpenTherm Smart WIFI Thermostat - Duration: 11:20.Hi! Wanna build your own smart thermostat with remote control? Let's start!
Most of modern heaters support OpenTherm protocol which give us a lot of benefits
like more comfortable room climate energy saving, remote control and
monitoring. So what we need? First of all we need OpenTherm Adapter. Because OpenTherm
protocol voltage level is about 20 volts but most of controllers has lower
voltage levels like 5 volt or 3.3 volts as in our case for ESP8266 controller. So to
build this adapter you can follow instructions described in my article
about OpenTherm Adapter or just buy it on my web-site ihormelnyk.com. Next thing that we
need it's OpenTherm Shield for ESP8266 controller board. It's pretty
simple. Just two 8 pin headers and Dallas 18B20 temperature sensor. I use this
sensor because it's small accurate and easy to use. This shield you can find in my
article about OpenTherm Thermostat. And the main part it's of course the WeMos
D1 Mini board with ESP8266 controller. So if we stack all these parts
together we will get almost finished thermostat.
Here it is!
But what about enclosure? I decided to use RJ12 phone socket box because
it's easy to connect or disconnect boiler and suitable for our parts. It's looks like this
So let's build our thermostat. I've rearranged a bit screw holders
Then we should screw our OpenTherm Shield. We should use two of four wires to
connect boiler
Then we stack our OpenTherm Adapter
and solder it! Then WeMos D1 Mini board. Also I have made two holes
one for micro USB connector and one for led. So we have finished our hardware.
Let's continue with software! First of all you need to download and install
Arduino IDE. So we go to official Arduino website
arduino.cc, choose software/ downloads. Here we need to choose
appropriate Arduino Installer according to your operating system. Once it's installed we
need to install is ESP8266 board add-on. So we go to GitHub.com/
ESP8266/Arduino. Then go to Board Manager, copy board
manager link and open Arduino IDE and go to preferences paste link here
Then go to Board Manager
type ESP8266 and click install
it's installed. When we need to install Dallas temperature library, so we go to
Library Manager
type here Dallas temperature, click install
it's installed when we need to install my OpenTherm Library
click install. So we have all the libraries installed! Then we need to go to
my website even http://ihormelnyk.com, open article about OpenTherm Thermostat. Scroll down,
select and copy sketch
Open Arduino IDE and paste it here
Scroll up, here you have to specify your Wi-Fi name
and Wi-Fi password
Then we need to connect OpenTherm Thermostat using micro USB cable
Then I go to Tools and choose our board. It's WeMos D1 Mini board
Then we have to check our COM port. Its COM10 and compile and upload sketch
Flush is completed, so Thermostat is ready
My Windows machine resolves thermostat DNS name, so locally I can use address
like http://thermostat
Here it is!
But my Android smartphone doesn't want to resolve it, so I have to know
IP address. To get IP address we can use Serial Port Monitor, but first we need to
Reset our thermostat to see output from the start, Here is the Reset button!
So let's open Serial Port Monitor and click the reset button. Here you can see IP address
Let's use it on my smart phone
Here it is! Also in Serial Port output you can see some errors, invalid boiler
response, which means that the boiler is not connected
So let's connect it!
As you can see output is changed. First value it's Set Point next value
its current room temperature and another values are PID controller parameters. PID
controller is used to calculate required water temperature to support desired
room temperature. This sketch is just a simple sample to show you how to build
Smart Thermostat, but I have a lot of ideas how to make thermostat interface
much more functional like Nest Thermostat and even more! Thank you for your
attention and subscribe to my channel if you are interested in future videos! Bye!

DIY Smart Scale with Alarm Clock - Duration: 2:39.Hi there!
In my previous project I designed a DIY Wi-Fi connected smart scale.
It measures ones weight, displays it locally and synchronizes with Adafruit.io.
It was produced using 3D printing,
a Firebeetle ESP8266,
and some load cells.
You can find full instruction on the description of this video.
This time I wanted to hack it and add some new features.
I'm not the kind of guy who wakes up full of energy, ready for a new day!
Instead, I stay in bed for several minutes, gathering strenght to finally stand up!
Then I had the idea to add an internet connected clock to my smart scale.
It triggers an alarm clock ...
which continues to alarm until it senses a change in weight on the scale!
The hardware part was quite easy.
I just had to connect a couple of jumpers to my ESP8266
and add a small 5V buzzer on the other end.
You can find full instructions on the description of this video.
The 3D printed structure was the same described on my previous tutorial.
The electronics will fit easily inside it.
The scale is plugged on the USB port for updating its software.
The code was designed and uploaded using Arduino IDE.
Upon startup it will connect the Wi-Fi router and connect to Adafruit.io.
The display will inform current status of the connection
until it's successfully connected.
The ESP8266 will connect a server and read current time.
This way it'll be able to sync its clock and update time on the display.
Adafruit.io was used in this project to store user's weight and for alarm setup.
Alarm time can be configured from the website by adding a new value on the feed.
Changes on this feed will automatically be transferred and stored on the ESP8266.
The alarm will be triggered at time configured on Adafruit.io.
Buzzer will keep ringing until pressure is applied on the smart scale.
Weight will be measured, displayed and stored on Adafruit.io.
This way, it's possible to keep track of measurements over the time.
I hope you liked it!
