Auto news on Youtube Dec 4 2018

Hey everybody, this is Matt with CarGurus.

I'm at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and that little firecracker is the 2019 Mazda3.

The redesigned shield-style grille evokes the larger CX-5 crossover, but whether you

opt for the sedan or the hatchback, the rest of the car is truly one-of-a-kind.

On the hatchback, you'll notice this sharp little edge of the door opening just before

the rear begins to taper dramatically.

It's very reminiscent of Mazda's Kai design concept, and I can't think of another car

in this class with this much style.

The interior is beautifully minimal.

It almost feels like you're in an art class for perspective drawing where all these details

just taper to a vanishing point.

And look at this swath of soft-touch leather across the dash.

That's the sort of detail that you see more often in a luxury car, and that is exactly

how Mazda wants you thinking about this one.

Under the sheet metal, we've got Mazda's new Skyactiv-X engine.

Now this manages to increase fuel economy and power by combining an ultralean fuel mixture

with a controlled combustion ignition.

And I know, that sounds really complicated, but think of it as the best parts of a gas

engine with the best parts of a diesel engine.

A lot of automakers have tried this, but Mazda is the first to make it work.

The 2019 Mazda3 will also offer all-wheel drive.

But we do have one concern: The previous Mazda3 was exceptionally fun to drive, but, even

with all-wheel drive, this one might not be as good.

Mazda replaced the rear suspension with a much more rudimentary setup.

It's the same rear-end you'll find on the CX-3 crossover, and Chris Wardlaw noticed

some bouncing and wiggling when he tested that one recently.

Mazda has started to develop a little reputation for these luxury interiors at sub-luxury price

tags.

And while the new Mazda3 with that new engine could rise to the upper-twenty-thousand or

even lower-thirty-thousand-dollar range, we won't quite know for sure until we see it

on sale just before the spring of 2019.
