Niels van Roij Design - Masterclass Lexus LS - Duration: 8:06.

Welcome to the fourth and last episode of the Masterclass Automotive Design at Louwman Exclusive.

My name is Niels van Roij, car designer in London and today I'll tell you all about the design of the new LS.

About 10 metres distance, we can discuss the proportions of the car.

What do we see?

We see a front axle mounted far ahead in the body, an elongated nose...

...a cabin placed relatively backwards into the body...

...a long, sloping roofline and only a very short rear overhang.

This car features a dynamic profile, resulting in a dynamic sedan.

This is rather different compared to the start of Lexus many years ago.

During the presentation of a new Lexus a while ago, a journalist said "Yet another boring car"...

...and this triggered the CEO who dicated the following design brief to the Lexus design studio:

"No more boring cars."

And upon that briefing they created the very outspoken Lexus L-finesse design language.

For instance the new Lexus LC and LS have been designed under the L-finesse design language.

And if we walk towards to front end of the vehicle, we see the DRG, the Down the Road Graphic:

The cumulative graphics on the nose of a car, the headlights, the Spindle grille and other...

...intakes at the far ends of the nose. All are typical for the L-finesse design language.

Surfacing, the skin of the car, is very boldly executed on the LS.

This is relatively easy to execute in plastics, like the front bumper, but a whole lot more complicated...

...in the metal parts of the body - such as the bonnet.

Look at the great depth in this piece here, concave and convex surfacing.

The strong front fender is merging into the bonnet nicely and runs deeply into the low, sports-car like nose.

A fantastic eye for detail in the headlight. People are working on these pieces for years.

And look at the sculpture within the sculpture of the car.

This signature lighting, executed through LED lights...

...is a visual signature making it recognizable as a Lexus product.

Lexus makes each of its cars very identifiable as a Lexus, yet they still have loads of individual character.

The LC has a very different signature lighting and yet is very much distinguishable as a Lexus product.

A job well done and the same goes for the grille.

And I'll take you down the Spindle grille specifically.

Often the main focus is on the top end of the nose, and in this case the entire front end is sculpted.

The pattern is continuously changing too. Very beautifully excuted.

I'd now like to take you to the side of the car and show you how jewelry, detailling...

...is very important here too.

For instance the chrome trim piece here, at the A-pillar, is very visible.

Usually there is a mirror on this traingular spot and only a small, flat piece of chrome.

Lexus hasn't gone for such an easy solution.

They have placed the mirror on the shoulder line of the door, with the chrome piece completely...

...out in the open in full sight. There is a clear focus on details, which is typically Japanese.

Looking at the glazing, the completely flush B-pillar and C-pillar are worth mentioning.

Completely integrated into the plane of the windows, this makes car designers very happy indeed.

There is a lack of shutlines too.

The DLO, the Day Light Opening, the graphic of the outline of the windows, is truly looking like one piece.

The B-pillar and C-pillar are not protruding from the body.

Here, at the C-pillar, again a nice piece of sculpture, done with great finesse.

That brings us towards the rear end.

Again the light units showcase this is a Lexus. A clearly visible L-shape in the lighting.

With a sheer endless amount of details within the unit.

We just looked at the taillights in detail. Now we're taking a step back...

...looking at the proportion and the surfacing.

About 2 metres distance.

The hipline flows lovely into the rear end and into the chrome strip.

A very three dimensionally designed car: a highly complex job.

Three dimensions come together, the top end, the rear end and the side.

And it is hard to actually define where the rear end stops and the top starts, or the side versus rear end.

Welcome in the interior of the new Lexus LS, in the interior the very Japanese way of designing...

...and building cars is communicated clearly and honestly.

This is exactly what makes this car unique.

What do we see?

We're starting with proportions, and obviously 10 meters distance isn't possible inside a car.

However, nevertheless we're looking at the complete picture now.

We see a nicely horizontally oriented interior, which looks rather lightweight.

This has been achieved through the layering of interior components.

From the horizontal parts, these upright elements appear, draped over the top surface of the dashboard...

...they form a base for these pleasantly shaped controls.

From this side I can tell you something about how the dashboard flows into the door card...

...but mainly on the design of the door card itself.

The task of design is to elevate engineering to a higher level.

Through design the skillset of Lexus engineers shows.

Specifically the Tacumi craftspeople, who studied for years to be able to assemble these cars...

...they are being put on a stage by design, as it showcases their knowledge and capabilities.

For instance by working with layers, lines starting at the bottom of the dash flowing towards the window.

A layer of wood on top, this can also be unique traditional hand-cutted glass, typical Lexus.

And on top of that another layer matching the material of the dashboard.

The flow of lines from the bottom of the dashboard all the way up...

...would be interrupted quite abruptly by a grab handle.

Lexus made sure this wouldn't happen by applying a visually floating grab handle here.

It makes the layering work in all her beauty.

That is how design strengthens the brand and the brand DNA, at Lexus.
