Aaalright friends! Please don't be put off now even though this kind of setting is quite unusual for my channel.
But I changed my plans of placing my opinion about the bike in the Uphill RAW video simply because I was too lazy to
type this much into Adobe Premiere so I'll just talk.
And since I've made quite a lot of videos with the Monkey I'll just insert those now. So you don't have to look at my ugly face the whole time.
The title gave it away already but actually it's not just clickbait. I honestly think the Monkey is the best 125 bike you can buy.
Best means the bike which provides the most fun.
Because to me the Honda Monkey was the one bike which managed to put the biggest grin into my face this year.
And here I mean out of ALL bikes I rode this year:
RSV, Fireblade SP, Speed Triple RS, Tuono, Super Duke and more
And still I had the most fun on the Honda Monkey.
Well, how does the bike manage to be my favourite 125? After all it only got 9,4 bhp and 11 Nm
which isn't as powerful as others.
Of course, one fact is impressive, it's its weight (with fuel) of 107kg.
You can feel that but actually ALL 125s are light weight and super easy to handle obviously.
But even though the Monkey IS lighter than the rest it is not what makes this bike so special.
The thing is: each time we're riding 125 bikes we usually start making comparisons to the "big" bikes. Or bigger bikes.
When we talk about looks you'll hear things like "the bike looks grown-up" or "the bike doesn't look like a 125".
Regarding ride ability you'll hear statements like "this bike is mature for a 125" or
"this bike is solid for a 125" and
that's exactly the point where in my opinion the Honda Monkey wins
because it is a bike - which is a very rare thing - which doesn't take itself seriously.
The wonderful thing about the Monkey from Honda - which is not me, I'm just a monkey, is that
*non-translatable German language bullshit*
is that the Monkey doesn't even need to try to come across as mature, like a "big bike".
That's not its purpose.
And as rider this touches me in a way which is
hard to put in words but
on a bike like this I simply hop on with a different kind of feeling and mindset.
And this is very positive. For a change it is not about things like performance or
boring facts like fuel economy. Which I don't really care about anyway.
On the Monkey I hop on and automatically I'm in a good mood.
Which all bikes do to me basically but on this Honda it's simply 4 or 5 times better.
Probably it's due to all these positive reactions you get from people when riding around town. On no other bike
- no matter if it's a real weapon or the most impressive travel enduro in the world - did I get those kind of cheerful reactions.
You make people laugh. Which I often do. But usually unintentional.
I only managed to have this with the Monkey.
So you get on the bike for the first time and ride through town and have people smile at you
and so you're reminded of this awesome feeling each time you get on the bike. And this does something do you. I can't describe it other than saying that it is awesome.
And even though the bike is one which doesn't take itself seriously it still
rides very well actually.
You maybe saw it in my Onboard video. Which I'm linking up here somewhere.
You can watch that and see how fast you actually can go with it.
It's good for quick riding because as always Honda is using quite decent components.
Which means even when going fast it still provides decent stability
which means it didn't have me bouncing around. Even the stock tires which many people complain about
let you lean the bike down to the pegs without any problems. Admittedly that's not that much lean on the Monkey though.
But it works just fine. And even the brakes which often are 125 bike's weak points
or at least need lots of force on the lever was a very nice surprise on the Monkey.
I guess that's where the light weight comes into play. The brake is not different from other 125 brakes. The disc is smaller even.
Two more things which are sensational. Well, just one thing actually is:
it's turning circle.
The turning circle is so tight! Riding through traffic doesn't get any better than with the Monkey.
And one thing I initially worried about since I know these Skyteam Monkey replicas which
are a lot closer to the old Monkey original size-wise but
on those you're seated very, very low.
SO low I actually said I wouldn't take them into town. Because in case of a collision an ordinary car is not going to hit your leg or foot
but your head or torso instead which I don't necessarily need.
So I was worried at first that the Monkey which I like so much would actually be very dangerous but
fortunately that is not the case. With 775mm seat height you're seated appropriately and on eye level with the cagers.
Another feature I want to mention is that fortunately it got NO ABS on the rear brake.
Which means you can do awesome skids.
*asking question about German/Austrian language differences*
So brake skids work awesome. And there's something special about those. It's basically like a fart.
They're super primitive and idiotic but they'll never stop being hilarious. I was laughing my ass off together with Cowboy-Sepp.
Another great thing: I'm 184cm tall, my brother who tried it too is 193cm tall and both of us found enough space.
So on this ULTRA comfortable seat which is completely flat you can move around freely and so it works both for tall and short persons.
Of course, the taller the person on the bike the funnier it looks and probably means more positive reactions from people even.
Take a look at this moment I filmed here. A group of Indian tourists
seemed to really dig the Monkey. I never experienced something like this. Probably 20 people wanted to sit on the Monkey.
We'll spend the whole afternoon here!
Soon we're through with the whole of India. But there are even more approaching!
We need to put up a bowl for donations!
Tomorrow we're famous in India!
I love how they even try the ratty Honda!
So now I need to address some negative aspects. Because there unfortunately are some.
During my 10 day Monkey trial I saw that the famous and great Honda-quality is also present in the Monkey but
definitely I've seen Hondas with better build quality already.
While riding I
felt and heard some nasty vibrations. Probably coming from some of the plastic parts.
And in the front, the chrome headlight ring kept on falling off of the black lamp case.
It was no big deal since you still would never lose the part but
it kept on sliding off and you'd have to use your hands to get it back into place.
Which was annoying. Especially since - which brings me to the second negative aspect - on
a bike this expensive that's a No-No. Because the Monkey is definitely not cheap.
In Austria it's more than 4000€ which
is a lot. Compared to other modern 125s it's not that bad or even cheap but still
I mean it is a little "less motorcycle" compared to the full-sized 125 bikes.
So paying more than 4K for that hurts but
there are no alternatives. There is no other 125 or even bigger motorcycle which
made me laugh this much. I just got interrupted by the door bell, probably something from Amazon.
So the price in my opinion is too expensive but like I said there are no alternatives.
Personally I actually would - if I had more than my famous two-digits budget which barely keeps my old CB500 running -
I'd immediately buy this motorcycle, the Honda Monkey.
On no other motorized two-wheeler did I have this much fun. When thinking back I
still have to smile. Those days were super awesome and by the way
I'm hoping for the same effect with another Honda relaunch: the Super Cub
So I'm trying very hard to get one to test-ride next year because for sure I'd love to try it out.
Anyways! Now you know my opinion about the Honda Monkey.
Thank you very much for watching and listening and
so long, take care and, erm, as always:
