Hey smart people, Joe here.

Have you ever heard the phrase "to drink like a fish?"

Well, unless you're a ocean dwelling species, that probably means staying sober.

Because freshwater fish don't drink!

Saltwater fish on the other hand?

They're constantly drinking.

But if some fish drink all the time and other fish don't drink at all, we're left with

an obvious question: Do fish pee?

What… you've never wondered that?!

Water is essential to life as we know it.

To keep their chemistry running smoothly, living things need just the right amount of

water in their bodies.

You'd think that fish have it made when it comes to staying hydrated, but it's not

so easy.

Fish gills lets oxygen flow into their bodies, but they're also letting water constantly

escape.

Ocean water is *saltier* than the insides of fish.

So water wants to move from the inside out to balance that out.

That's a problem if you're a fish who wants to stay alive.

It's a process called osmosis, and we can demonstrate that with these eggs.

I've dissolved the shells away, leaving a membrane that'll allow water to pass through.

One is covered in pure H2O.

And one goes into sugar syrup.

The syrup contains lots of sugar molecules, and not much water, so water passes out of

the egg to balance it out, and the egg shrinks!

Life is all about balance.

Now, we keep the salts and dissolved chemicals in our blood balanced by flushing the extra

through our kidneys, and drinking fresh water when we're thirsty.

But ocean fish only have one option: drink salt water in order to get the H2O they need

to stay alive.

And most of them do that a *lot*.

But they need to get rid of the salt without dehydrating, which they do using special cells

in the gills that pump out the extra.

Ocean fish only make a tiny amount of urine, and what little pee they make is almost as

salty as the pool they pee in.

Freshwater fish have the opposite problem.

Their insides are saltier than where they live, so water is constantly leaking *in*

through their skin and gills.

It's just like the naked egg we put in pure water.

The inside of the egg is saltier than the water around it, so water flows in

and the egg swells up!

Plus, they get even more water from their food.

So even in their wet world, they never have to take a drink.

Freshwater fishes have to *get rid* of water constantly to keep their cells from bursting,

which means they pee *a lot*.

They're pretty much peeing all the time.

If I peed as much as a freshwater fish, I'd release up to 28 liters a day, which is about

20 times more pee than I usually make.

For fish, peeing in the yard is a big help to their neighbors.

Fish pee is full of ammonia, a nitrogen containing compound, and phosphorous, both nutrients

that plants crave.

These also help feed algae and coral reefs, like a liquid fertilizer that helps keep aquatic

ecosystems healthy.

Fish are little swimming, urinating, nutrient recycling plants.

Some fish get crazy with this salt-and-water balancing act.

Some are able to live in water so salty it's hard for them to stay below the surface.

Others, like salmon, can tweak their body chemistry to move between salty and fresh

water.

Sharks and their relatives are especially weird when it comes to salt balance.

Using a special enzyme, they stuff urea–another nitrogen containing compound–into their

tissues.

By loading their insides with another ion, they keep water from wanting to rush out of

their bodies.

It's also why their meat smells like pee.

Thankfully, we (sniff sniff armpit) don't do that.

I smell great.

But we do owe our ability to regulate water and salt to our fishy ancestors.

Scientists think that a healthy salt level for the bodies of most living animals is about

the same concentration as the ancient oceans where life began.

You even have evidence of this in your body.

Before we're born, human embryos develop three different types of kidneys.

Two get absorbed, and one eventually becomes the final pair.

I feel like I've started a lot of videos this year

with the phrase I'm a big fan of smart tech.

And it's true.

I like controlling various devices in my home

using my smart phone or voice control.

But hold up.

I was in the Apple store the other day

and I came across this.

This is the Colgate Connect E One.

Now you're probably wondering,

what is a toothbrush doing in the Apple store?

Well, it was in the smart phone section

because this is a smart electric toothbrush

with artificial intelligence built in.

It aims to use technology

to improve your dental hygiene

with its companion iOS app.

Now coincidentally, after I saw it,

Colgate reached out and said they wanted to send one over

for me to check out.

So, let's jump into it.

As I mentioned today, we are taking a look

at a smart electric toothbrush

that has AI built in.

This is the Colgate Connect E One.

Now if you go into the dental hygiene area

of your favorite store,

whether it's an electronics store or a pharmacy, et cetera,

you're gonna see a bunch of different things

to take care of your teeth.

You got your water flossers,

you got your regular floss,

you've got your mouthwash,

you've got the toothpaste,

you got all sorts of stuff, whitening,

all this, but the one thing people don't do

as well as they should out of everything

is brush your teeth.

Now hold on I know a lot of you out there,

what are you talking about?

I don't brush my teeth,

I brush my teeth very well, thank you.

You get an extra brush head

and the charging base.

The smart toothbrush maps out your mouth as you brush

and it keeps track of exactly where you brushed

and it will even provide feedback on what you missed

and how you can improve your brushing score.

All this information is available right in the app,

which connects to your toothbrush over Bluetooth.

If you connect to the app while you're brushing,

the app will even provide real time feedback

so you can make sure you hit every spot.

The app gives you an overview of your weekly average stats

based on duration, frequency and surface coverage.

You can tap on each item to get a detailed graph

and make sure you're on track with your brushing.

And what's more, you can even share your results

with your dentist to make your appointments

that much more effective and you can even opt-in

to Apple research kit integration,

which lets you share your brushing data anonymously

to help oral health researchers improve their products.

So obviously the app makes brushing a little more immersive

and a little more fun, especially for kids.

But what's even cooler is there is also a companion

Apple watch app as well,

so you do not need to have your phone out

while you're brushing your teeth.

I just mentioned kids,

the Colgate Connect E One is also very kid-friendly.

It features games in the app that'll motivate kids

to brush better and collect coins

based on their brushing habits.

The family mode also allows you to track the entire family,

so the whole group can keep up and compete with each other.

The app also keeps track of when you brush your teeth,

perfect for keeping the kids on track

and reminding them to brush twice a day.

The Connect E One has everything you need

to track and receive feedback on your brushing,

but it's also an amazing toothbrush on its own.

It uses sonic vibrations to provide the best clean

and the small rounded head is able to fit into any

spot of your mouth.

The brush has a 10 day battery life

so if you go on a trip that's shorter than that

there's no need to take your charger with you.

And if you do run out of juice,

it takes about 12 hours to go from an empty battery

back to fully charged.

The brush heads are easily replaceable

and you can buy replacement heads in packs of three

for about 19 bucks.

So went back to my whole love of smart home tech,

even my toothbrush now is smart enough to connect

to my smartphone, to connect to my smart watch

and give me feedback on how well I'm brushing my teeth,

which may not sound like a big deal,

but oral hygiene is a part of health

and when tech isn't just cool but actually helps

keep us healthier and more fit,

I am a huge fan of that.

I set goals.

Of course you do.

But a lot of people make financial resolutions at Christmas.

How should they do that?

Well, I think if you're going to set a goal

it should be a SMART goal.

I love SMART goals.

So it should be specific,

it should be measurable, it should be achievable, it should be realistic and

there has to be a time around it.

Anything that you measure or anything

that you want to achieve you have to be able to measure it.

I find that if you have something to measure

that at least you can know how far away you are from achieving those goals.

Which is why we love

into your financial plan.

Smart RAMPS - A4988 Stepper - Duration: 7:23.

this is the Smart RAMPS board it's able to hold five native stepper drivers

being E0 E1 those are extruders so extruder one

extruder two then we have X Y & Z we have pins over here to connect to the

NEMA motors, so NEMA 17 is usually standard so the only interesting

exception here would be your Z which has two sets of pins for either side of your

steppers being two motors I want to talk about how this is inserted I'll cover

this in greater detail in a moment but for now what I want to talk about is the

micro step pin jumpers on the Smart RAMPS they no longer exist they're

hardwired to either do one sixteenth of a step or one thirty-second of a step so

in a moment I'll show you the a 4988 and how it works and you could probably

figure out from my example how the drv8825 will work from that if not ask

here's the top side of the a 4988 what I want to point out is the pin location

for the enable pin which is right here and in a moment I'll show you what it

looks like on the underside this is the underside of the a 4988 I want to show

you the enable pin once more this will have to be matched on the smart ramps

board for any one of the driver ports that you connect it to for the female

side that way you'll prevent it from actually being destroyed. Okay I

want to talk about the port for the X at the very bottom of the port right here

there is an en that is the pin right here where I'm hovering over that you

try and match up for your stepper drivers that I showed previously in the

video if you don't match up that pin you will have issues such as cooking your

board. Okay in order to place this correctly in your ex female ports for

the X stepper driver you have to line up your en pin with the en pin over here

and then apply a little bit of thumb pressure and that's how you install the

stepper driver now this will be the same for each and every one of these

configurations where you have to install a stepper driver some of them are

written quite well on the silkscreen to the board that would be the lettering

others are not so you might have to use a key figuring out the patterns that

match or you can just work from this end add your next one over here and your

next one over here in a moment I'll show you how to load the Marlin firmware on

the board for the stepper driver. Okay the first thing we want to do is open up

Adruino IDE then we want to go to the, "configuration.h", tab we want to

search on, "motherboard", want to verify that it's, "board_ramps_smart_EFB", so we have the correct

board next thing we want to do is search on, "default_axis".

And here's where the meat of the matter is for X Y Z E0 and

E1 we have our defined options below notice that the first value is 80 which

is for x that's for steps then we have 80 for y 4,000 for Z and 500 for the E0 so in

this case all we want to do is compile and upload so let's verify that we have

the correct board which is Adruino due programming port and it's on COM port 3

which is selected so we're gonna compile and upload. Okay to prep it to test it we

have to connect the four pins for the NEMA 17 stepper we then have to connect

the power from the power supply and then we have to plug it in now keep in mind

we're going to use the end stop to watch for the end of the access in a moment

I'll show you in pronterface how we actually test it. Okay the first thing we

want to do is open up pronterface we then want to connect to the motherboard

now what we want to do is press the home button and then click the end stop with our fingers, but before we do that let's verify the end stop is actually open

which it is so now we're going to click home for the x-axis and then with our

finger press the end stop okay in a moment what I'm gonna do is

I'm going to advance the x-axis by 10 to verify that it's working so as you can

see okay so I'm gonna advance by 10 and then I'm gonna advance by a hundred so
