SUVs may be all the rage but iconic sports cars, well they can still make a
splash and we saw that at the 2018 LA Auto Show with a new generation of the
Porsche 911. Now this is the 992 generation if you're a Porsche
enthusiast, not to be confused with the outgoing car which was the 991
generation. We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg here in the 992 with the
Carrera S and the Carrera 4S. There's definitely going to be a lot more of
these cars to come based on this new generation. So what makes the 992
different from the 991? Well the two cars look awfully similar at a glance
but as any Porsche enthusiast will tell you it's all about the details. The 992
now has harder corners at the forward edges of the hood with subtle streaks
kind of leading up toward the windshield. The headlights still remain circular in
design with these sort of center bezels that have four LEDs kind of poking out
around the edges. Again, similar to the 991 911. You get around
back and there are some more obvious changes here. First of all that light bar
that kind of goes between the taillights, that's drawn from similar themes in
other Porsche models including it's SUVs. Above that below the rear window
there's a lot of bright work now and there's an adjustable rear spoiler that
kind of sits between the two. Porsche says the front width of the car, the
front track, is a little bit wider than than before in the rear on both the Carrera
S with rear-wheel drive in the Carrera 4S with all wheel drive is actually as wide
as the prior Carrera 4 which had all-wheel-drive. So you get a little bit
more width there especially for rear drive cars. You get inside it's still a
very vertically oriented dashboard. There's a touchscreen that's kind of
housed in the center part. It's up to 10.9 inches now versus seven
inches before. There's still a very prominent center console it kind of
faces the ceiling, has a lot of controls on it. Importantly Porsche has confirmed
to Cars.com that the 911 will not have all of those touch sensitive kind of
capacitive buttons around the gearshift which we've seen on the Panamera and on
the Cayenne recent redesigns of those vehicles. We're not really wild about
those controls in the Panamera so good news here for the 911. Now you get to
power trains. Still a turbocharged horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine.
Porsche claims improved fuel injection, new layouts for the turbo chargers and
intercooler so total power here 443
horsepower. That may seem like just a modest bump in power only 23
horsepower versus the outgoing 911 Carrera S and Carrera 4S but it works
through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission here versus the 7-speed
unit before. It gets power to either at the rear wheels again if you're in the
Carrerra S, all four wheels if you're in the Carrera 4S and hits 60 miles per
hour with the optional Sport Chrono Package in as little as 3.3
seconds for the rear drive car, 3.2 seconds for the
all-wheel drive car. That's really really significant. Down 0.4 second
versus the outgoing same style of vehicle from the 991 generation.
That's a really astronomical number when you're talking acceleration numbers this
low. The 2020 911 Carrera S and Carrera 4S hit dealers in the summer of 2019. You
can see plenty more coverage about those cars and everything else Porsche has to
offer in the new 911 as it comes out all on Cars.com.

ALISTAIR WEAVER: At this gala event here in Los Angeles,
Porsche has finally taken the wraps off the new 911, known
to the aficionados as the 992.
It debuts in US showrooms next summer
priced from around $112,000.

This is the eighth generation, the 911.
It goes all the way back to the 1960s.
And believe it or not, Porsche built a million examples.
And then when the recipes that good, it pays not to mess
with it too much.
When you look at the new 992, it's
instantly recognizable as a member of the family.
The most obvious change is here at the rear.
This red LED strip that runs all the way
across the rear of the car is a signature feature
of all the contemporary Porsches.
These rear rims now measure a gigantic 22 inches.
And these haunches have been given a real presence.
If you're following it, you are going to be in no doubt
that this is the new 911.
But it's not going to offend the purists.
Looks great.
The 911 is still rear engined.
Of course, the three liter flat 6 turbo engine
now boasts 443 horsepower.
That's 23 more than before.
Porsche is claiming, for the standard
Carrera 2S, zero to 60 in just 3 and 1/2 seconds, thanks,
in part, to a new 8 speed PDK floppy paddle gearbox.
If you want the Carrera 4S, well, that's 0.1 of a second
quicker to 60.
Both vehicles top out at over 190 miles an hour.
Inside, the change is more noticeable.
Attention focus on this large touchscreen
display that's been pinched from the Panamera.
And the overall impression of quality is superb.
And of course, being a 911, there's
a decent sized front trunk and some rear seats that
are appropriate for children.
I love some of the retro detailing too.
Like this extravagant checkered cloth trim
and this wonderful rev counter that's
right in your line of sight.
The only thing I don't like too much is this new gear stick.
The old one had a kind of leather-wrapped affair that
made it feel like a manual even if it wasn't.
This is a kind of slightly puny plastic controller.
Not cool.
Although the Carrera S models will be first to market,
they'll soon be followed by a manual version,
a standard Carrera, a Targa, a Cabriolet, a Turbo, a GTS,
a GT3, a GT2, and so on.
We're even told that for the first time
there'll be a 911 hybrid.
Nobody knows better than Porsche how to milk the variance.
We'll reserve judgment, of course,
until we've driven it early in the new year.
But on the face of it, this looks
like a very sensible evolution of classic 911 themes.
And given that the outgoing model was already
our top ranked sports coupe, it'd
be a major surprise if this didn't set a new benchmark.

All new Porsche 911 type 992 eighth generation of this iconic sports car here's a quick look - Duration: 4:44.
alright guys here is the new 911 99 to all new generation 84 911 and this is
the interior they've had a massive rethink of the material of the interior
so there's only one analog dial there hope you can see that that's the Tucker
the rev counter everything else is digital as you can see they're all
changeable the seats have been completely redesigned with more bolster
you can see them they're sort of like raised buckets there they're shells in
fact you've got a new cup holder excuse me just one second just a quick video
thank you there's a cup holder in the middle they
used to be over there press the button over there and two would pop out under
the glovebox there's a new 10-point it's gonna say ten point nine or ten point
two inch screen there which is obviously much bigger than the previous screen and
nine eleven it's a very nice switch gear down there so still a few analogue
buttons down there and an all new shifter digital shifter electronic
shifter which is interesting because this is now an 8-speed PDK dual-clutch
gearbox rather than a seven and the reason they did that is because the gap
between six and seven before seven being an overdrive gear was too long so
they've shortened all of the ratios to make this inherently better car to drive
and quite a bit quicker to the career arrests with Sport Chrono will go as low
as three point four seconds naught to a hundred I've just shown you in the back
one giving you that information as you can see that Porsche has always been so
practical the 911 because you can however have bench seats or kiddy seats
in the back I've had a sixteen-year-old in one of these so no problem there and
of course a great parcel shelf up there that
that's the new 911 it's a complete new rethink but still very much
obviously 911 and of course the entire car is new with aluminium panels
everywhere and I'll get out of everyone's way so they can get in here
and show you the front very quickly because we've had too many people before
so there's the front of it it's can being completely redesigned and much
smoother a lot more active arrow down below very much so a new light system of
course those four LEDs surrounding the main beam new bonnet as I said every
other panel is aluminium except the front and rear fascias new wheels
they're staggered now 20 up front on the career RS and 21 at the rear
as you can see Pirelli PZero s on this on this car here at the VLA reveal world
reveal here's the rear of the car
as you can see the bumpers are now sorry the exhaust tips are now incorporated
into the rear bumper I'm told they don't actually connect to
the muffler but this car generates a lot more power 331 kilowatts 22 kilowatts up
from the previous career arrests and I've cost quite a bit faster the curry
rest will stop without Sport Chrono wool
3.7 3.6 and I've got a different
the
see that this is definitely a more spectacular car than the 99 1.2 it's
much wider so the standard body now even on
I'm career s is a wide-body so wider tracks up front and rear same wheelbase
but slightly more overhanging in the front incorporate a corporate different
error packages there so they have a quote brand new nine nine to nine eleven
eight the generation of this for this most iconic car
